childbearing are not treated adequately, or at all. Clinical practice guidelines focus primarily on provision of information rather than on interaction factors. In this study, we explored clinician interactional style characteristics contributing to patient response to perinatal depression referral and treatment. Stratified purposeful sampling resulted in 23 participants selected by pregnancy, socioeconomic, and depression status. Participants completed semistructured interviews exploring their experiences with and preferences for clinician interactional style characteristics in the context of obstetrics-setting referral and delivery of depression treatment. Thematic analysis revealed a central theme related to interactional cues that influence women’s reactions to clinical encounters, summarized by the question, “Can this person help me?” Women evaluated this question in four domains: feeling heard, developing trust in the clinician, perceiving technical competence in the clinician, and feeling that the intervention focus is effectively chosen and communicated. We draw on our experiences and learning while undertaking three research inquiries. In the first inquiry we listen and respond to the voices of Australian Aboriginal people who live with diabetes and we share an alternate story, where fear is turned into courage, as told by these Elders. The second inquiry involves email communications with women and men who live with a chronic illness and gives a facilitator’s reflections. And the third study is a capacity building process with women who have experienced child sexual abuse. These women have used/misused alcohol, licit/illicit substances, or gambling, which has contributed to their homelessness. Confronted by many of life’s obstacles, we gain a glimmer of hope as women describe the way in which they use the participatory process to make sense of their lives.It is argued that reflection occupies a central place is participatory action research cycles of ‘look, think and act’. ‘Look, think and act’ processes are appealing precisely because they are meaningful to research participants in their everyday lives. When these processes are internalised as modus operandi, they can be sustained throughout one’s life as a strategy for building capacity or ‘moving on’. ‘Moving on’ or transition is the theoretical life of an adolescent with multiple disabilities. One phenomenological interview lasting 3 hours illuminated life-long experiences of suffering, healing, and the quest to be treated as human, as perceived by a 16-year-old girl disfigured by multiple cancer treatments. Age-appropriate development is the ground of her existence, whereas the quality of relationships with care providers and the extent to which they demonstrate regard for her value as a person are figural. Health care providers have often failed to interact with her in ways supporting dignity and growth, treating her with “care” that is antithetical to the aims of their professions. This article presents findings from a qualitative study that explored views of the good nurse from the perspective of hospitalized children. The aims of the study were threefold: to remedy a gap in the literature; to identify characteristics of the good nurse from the perspective of children in hospital; and to inform children’s nursing practice. Twenty-two children were interviewed using an adapted ‘draw and write’ technique. Five themes relating to children’s views of the good nurse emerged from the analysis: communication; professional competence; safety; professional appearance; and virtues. Understanding of nursing presence and its link, if any, to nurse-patient interaction is basically subjective and intuitive. This article is based on the assumption that nursing presence fully understood may result in greater patient satisfaction and healing potential. A three-stage, hierarchical model culminating in healing presence is used to understand the nurse-patient dyad. This article explores the literature and analyses what people looking through webcams do within a particular health care practice in the Netherlands, that is, within the rehabilitation of people suffering from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. Several ways to describe the activities webcams support and perform are identified. The webcam is (1) concentrating the activities of its users, by making them focus on the task at hand and (2) magnifies the characteristics of the already existing relationships between webcam users by imposing a relational distance that fits best with intimate contacts.
