Wahrend die Arbeiten der spezifisch in Deir el-Medine belegten Holzbringer/-schneider, Wassertrager und Gipshersteller (= Gruppe 1) kaum Vorkenntnisse erforderten, waren fur die Ausubung der Berufe der Gruppe 2 (Fischer, Gartner, Toepfer, Wascher, Konditoren und Schmiede), die auch ausserhalb Deir el-Medines in AEgypten gut belegt sind, sowohl Ausrustung als auch Ausbildung und Erfahrung notwendig. Anhand einer diachronen Darstellung, zu deren Erarbeitung auch Informationen aus anderen Zeitstufen und Quellengattungen herangezogen wurden, zeigt die Studie, dass die Entstehung des Versorgungspersonals auf Neuerungen unter Ramses II. zuruckgeht: Die zuvor siedlungsintern geregelten einfachen Aufgaben der Gruppe 1 wurden in ein spezifisch fur Deir el-Medine eingerichtetes Versorgungspersonal ausgelagert und mit den extern ausgefuhrten Aufgaben der Gruppe 2 kombiniert. Dazu adaptierte man ein fur Handwerker und Arbeitskrafte anderer Institutionen bereits ubliches Organisationsprinzip. Dieses Arbeitssystem fuhrte rund drei Generationen spater, zu Beginn der 20. Dynastie, zur Ausbildung einer gewachsenen Sozialstruktur, die in den reich dokumentierten Regierungszeiten Ramses' III. und IV. detailliert rekonstruiert werden kann. Dabei wurde deutlich, dass die Entstehung und die Zusammensetzung dieses Versorgungspersonals wahrend der 19. und 20. Dynastie wesentlich durch die geographische, administrative, soziale, politische und oekonomische Entwicklung Deir el-Medines beeinflusst wurde, was das Versorgungspersonal zu einer flexiblen Gruppierung machte, deren Zusammensetzung, Anzahl und Arbeitsleistung mehrfach verandert und angepasst wurde. Die mehrheitlich aus Schriftquellen gewonnenen Ergebnisse liessen sich mit Informationen zu den Nutzungsphasen des Dorfes, zu den Anlagen im Tal der Koenige und im Tal der Koeniginnen sowie zu den Millionenjahrhausern in Einklang bringen und mit dem Erhaltungszustand der Quellen korrelieren. It engages the fields of history, archaeology, physical anthropology and philosophy to present an inter-disciplinary investigation of child, infant and foetal burials in the Egyptian archaeological record. The research is based on a sample of 1,809 children, infants and foetuses derived from a survey of all available published archaeological data from the Egyptian Early Dynastic to Middle Kingdom Periods (ca. 3300—1650 BC), supplemented by unpublished Early Dynastic cemetery data from the Australian Centre for Egyptology’s Helwan Project. This thesis addresses the absence of child, infant and foetal mortuary culture in Egyptian archaeological research. To date, scholars have surmised that published cemetery data rarely include significant numbers of child, infant and foetal burials, thereby rendering them unavailable for study. This apparent absence is attributed to differential burial practices for these individuals, based on an assumption that at this young age, they were not considered embodied members of the community. However, these hypotheses have been formed without consultation of available historical, archaeological, and skeletal evidence. As a result, children are marginalised within Egyptian archaeological narratives. While many studies consider the position, value and agency of Egyptian children via their artistic and epigraphic representations, such methodologies confine children’s lived experiences within the conceptual boundaries of socialisation and familism. In this frame, they are denied the same ontological status as adults. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses delivered in this thesis recalibrate these perspectives of child, infant and foetal mortuary culture and revise their lived experiences and cultural capacities in Egyptian society. The identification of so many children in the archaeological record confirms their suitability as subjects of research. The observation of the majority of child, infant and foetal burials in communal cemetery contexts refute hypotheses of supposed differential mortuary treatment. Consistent observations of profound similarities between child and adult mortuary culture are found to be indicative of their ontological equity during the timeframes canvassed by this research. In contrast to current reconstructions of children as passive familial appendages, this research demonstrates that ancient Egyptian children, infants and foetuses were considered individual social or skeletal remains. Due to temporal change and regional differences anthropometric standards have to be constantly renewed. The present study provides measurements of femoral dimensions in a contemporary German population and analyses sexual dimorphism by discriminant analysis. Maximum length (male: 46.4�2.4 cm, female: 43.4�2.4 cm), maximum midshaft diameter (male: 3.1�0.2 cm, female: 2.8�0.2 cm), condylar width (male: 8.4�1.0 cm, female: 7.7�0.5 cm), vertical head diameter (male: 4.9�0.3 cm, female: 4.4�0.3 cm), head circumference (male: 15.7�0.8 cm, female: 13.8�1.0 cm) and transverse head diameter (male: 4.9�0.3 cm, female: 4.3�0.3 cm) were measured in 170 femora, 100 from male (age: 16-92 years, mean: 60.8 years; body height: 153-190 cm, mean: 171 cm) and 70 from female (age: 20-96 years, mean: 72 years; body height: 146-175 cm, mean: 161 cm) individuals. In the discriminant analysis (leave-one-out-method) 67.7% of cases could be grouped correctly with the maximum length alone, 72.4% with the maximum midshaft diameter, 81.4% with the condylar width, 86.8% with the vertical head diameter, 87.7% with the head circumference and 89.6% with the transverse head diameter. The stepwise procedure with all head measurements showed that the results for the transverse head diameter could not be improved. Age and size have been found to correlate with MSM, and these aspects should be considered in activity reconstructions. The aim of this study was to find out the nature and the effects of labour intensity, age and size on MSM. Study material were skeletons (N = 108) of individuals of known age, sex and occupation housed at the Natural History Museum, Finland. MSM were scored for Pectoralis major, Deltoid, Teres major and Biceps brachii. These scores were combined to reflect total activity of an individual. Geometric mean of humeral measurements was used as a size indicator and radial tuberosity size was used as a muscle size indicator. Factors explaining MSM were studied using ANCOVA. This included age, size, muscle size, sex, labour intensity, and their interactions. Age and muscle size were the most significant factors explaining MSM, where muscle attachment areas and MSM grow with advancing age. Muscle attachment areas and skeletal frame size were also found to correlate. Least squares regression parameter estimates were used to study the effects of labour intensity, sex and side on MSM. It was found that in early life scores are higher in heavy labour group, but there is less age-related increase in these scores. This could mean that bone is unable to respond to heavy and continuous loading with surface structure. Therefore labour intensity cannot be reliably recorded in old individuals. Also age and size (as reflected in muscle attachment area) affect MSM and these aspects should be considered before making assumptions on labour intensity.
