It was one of the first books to come from William Caxton's press, and certainly the first book on rhetoric to be printed in England. Caxton had only begun publishing in England some three years earlier, was looking for commercially successful projects, and was still experimenting with type faces when in 1479 he printed Traversagni's book. His competitors at the event younger press at St. Alban's brought out a nearly identical edition the following year, the same year that Caxton published an independent epitome of the book. As James J. Murphy has observed, this flurry of early printing heralds a breakdown in the medieval pedagogical practice of a master and his disciples and the emergence of a commercial textbook industry. Implicit in this events, however, is the still larger issue of how the advent of printing changed the ways in which people regarded texts, the relations perceived among texts, and the changes in ways of thinking which arose from the very fact of print. Traversagni's book in 1480 is a brief prescriptive handbook for composition, while the book itself in 1479 (and St. Alban's, 1480) is the complete reference text on which the handbook is directly based. The book was too encyclopedic, too unwieldy, and presumably too expensive to be used as a handy guide for composition; the Epitome, despite its occasional flourishes, was too barren of context and detail to be more than utilitarian.
