Gist: Rather than create a subgenre that is tough to define and gets less respect, better to provide teens great diversity in cultures of all types so that they can gain authentic insights into the human condition and learn to appreciate life in its many forms. Bonus is that common problems/issues set in different cultures can increase tension and heighten reader's interest.
\nTeens callous about \"commies\" because unable to empathize -- part of naivete from typical teen characteristics -- \"egocentric, unfamiliar with many of the ugly realities of the world, and prone to simplistic notions of right and wrong, good and evil.\"
\nReading multicultural YA lit helped teens to develop \"authentic insight\" and dispel the narrow-mindedness. Nice metaphor -- windows into other cultures.
\nReluctance to label books as \"multicultural\" because \"labeling good books as anything but literature seems to place them out of the mainstream.\" IE \"Hispanic literature\" is somehow different from \"real\" literature and any label that preceds the word \"literature\" signals a demotion to a subgenre\" -- \"not worthy of inclusion in the curricular canon.\"YA lit has been \"exiled to the realms of subliterature, and thus the double-labeled \"multicultual young adult literature\" is doubly damned.\"

\nBooks about other cultures provide vicarious experiences. MC YAL helps teens find common groud because there are aspects of adolescence that are universal. Circumstances different but \"concerns about life\" similar.
