"abstractNote": "This dissertation examines the relationship between the researcher's assessment and students' perceptions of both out-of-class contact and oral proficiency in a study abroad context. The participants of two University of Massachusetts Amherst programs in Spain were investigated in the summer and fall of 2002. Self-report surveys of out-of-class contact were administered to these students, focusing on prior experience with Spanish, as well as interactive and noninteractive contact in Spanish and English during the sojourn abroad. In addition, students' self-evaluations of their oral proficiency levels were compared to the researcher's ratings, determined through oral interviews following the ACTFL OPI protocol. Finally, students kept language journals while abroad in order to continually reflect on a series of introspective questions about\nlanguage and learning opportunities. In a follow-up to the main study, five students who studied abroad a second time in the spring of 2003 also responded to a series of questions about their approach to learning abroad, comparing their two University of Massachusetts Amherst program experiences. The results of and responses to these instruments permit the researcher to gauge how students perceived the contributions of out-of-class contact to their oral proficiency levels and their overall learning process. In addition to fostering awareness and encouraging active learning on the part of participants, this project and its findings should enable future program planners to more effectively prepare students to maximize opportunities for interaction while abroad.",

In an effort to explore this issue from various perspectives, this study targeted several programs in Spain and Mexico with interviews of host families, students, and housing directors. Each group's perspective on key issues such as adjustment, common problems, and the “homestay advantage” was probed via on-site interviews and questionnaires. Results showed that the majority of the information reported by one group was normally corroborated by the other two, and all groups felt the homestay enhanced the study abroad experience.",

"abstractNote": "This study explores the role of social capital during a short-term study abroad experience in a nontraditional setting. The authors employed ethnographic methodologies to examine the impact of social capital on students traveling to a small town in a developing nation. The analysis revealed that students capitalized on abundant networks available via the host family, the community, and the service location to achieve their stated goals of language and culture development. Given an urgent need to maximize short-term study abroad, we suggest that study abroad curricula actively engage the host family, community, and service location to tap into established social networks. This can ensure that students experience meaningful, sustained contact with native speakers during a short-term sojourn and achieve language and culture goals.",

We explore the effects of gender, ethnicity, other social statuses, and role configurations on informal social network characteristics in an analysis of a U.S. sample of adults, of which 14% are ethnic/racial minorities. "abstractNote": "MLA Foreign Language Proficiency Tests for Teachers and Advanced Students were administered in 1965 to 2,782 seniors majoring in French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish at 203 institutions. The resulting data provided new evidence on a number of issues significant in the selection and training of future language teachers, though conclusions must be drawn with caution. Audio-lingual skills were generally low. Even brief time spent abroad had a potent effect on a student's language skills. Students of French or Spanish who started the language in elementary school tended to have an advantage over other majors. Those from homes where the foreign language was spoken attained greater competence. Foreign language aptitude is a factor significantly associated with the level of skill attained, but many low-aptitude students are able to compensate by diligent study and practice or because of special opportunities such as study abroad. Males and females were equal in language-learning ability. Students at larger institutions outperformed those at smaller ones, and students at private institutions did better than those at public ones. (Four figures and eleven tables are included.)",

"abstractNote": "This study reports on the measured proficiency-referenced learning outcomes during study abroad of a large, multi-institutional cohort (N=1,881) of  U.S. students of Russian who have undertaken intensive language study on ACTR-administered formal language study programs at Russian universities for periods of 2, 4, and 9 months over the course of the past 15 years. The study specifically examines the effects of different durations of immersion on learning outcomes across skills, as well as potential effects of age, gender, knowledge of other foreign languages, levels of control of language structure, years of formal study, and the interaction of gains across different skills. Attention is also devoted to the role of initial (pre-program) levels of proficiency in the prediction of ultimate outcomes from study abroad terms of different durations. Results indicate that second language (L2) gain across skills is strongly correlated with longer-duration immersion programming, including systematically documented outcomes at the Superior and Distinguished Levels (ILR 3, 3+, and 4) in the case of the yearlong overseas Flagship program, now in its sixth year. The present study replicates results of an earlier ACTR/NFLC “Predictors” study (Brecht, Davidson, & Ginsberg, 1995) that structural control and pre-program reading comprehension are correlated positively with L2 gain at the semester level while demonstrating similar effects for academic year program outcomes as well. In addition, a strong correlation of pre-program listening proficiency and post-program speaking gain was noted at the advanced levels and above. By contrast, age, gender, and years of formal study were not correlated with overseas L2 gain at the advanced level and above.",

The participants were intermediate second language Spanish (first\nlanguage English) learners in the study abroad and at-home contexts over a 4-month\nperiod. The participants received grammaticality judgment tests coded for morphological\nclass of the modified noun as well as attributive and predicative adjectives. Data\nwere also collected on social behavior and language contact in Spanish and English in\norder to explain data outcome. The findings suggest that no difference exists between the\ntwo learning contexts and that social behavior and language contact abroad have minimal\ninfluence on acquisition rate.",

"abstractNote": "Learner beliefs have traditionally been considered stable and static. According to recent research, however, they are dynamic and variable. Under this theory, the current study explores the effects of study abroad on beliefs. Belief questionnaires were administered to 70 English language learners while studying abroad in the United States. Learners were asked to reflect on their beliefs prior to arrival and at the time of the questionnaire administration to investigate what beliefs may change due to study abroad. The learners were divided into two groups according to their amount of time thus far abroad to see if amount of time abroad has an effect on belief changes. Factor analysis identified three underlying dimensions of the learner belief system, which concerned the teacher's role, learner autonomy, and self-efficacy. Comparisons between pre- and during study-abroad beliefs revealed that learners experienced changes in their beliefs on learner autonomy and the role of the teacher. Those with more time abroad had significantly more changes in their belief systems, suggesting that learning context and length of context exposure influence belief changes. Interviews provided insight into how study-abroad influences beliefs. This study supports the view that beliefs are dynamic, socially constructed, and responsive to context. (Contains 7 tables.)",

"abstractNote": "A large-scale statistical study of the predictors of language gain during study abroad is reported. subjects were 658 american college and graduate students in the soviet union between spring 1984 and spring 1990. variables examined included student characteristics (age, gender, citizenship, country of birth, place and levels of formal education, highest degree taken, major, prior russian and other second language training and experience, program type, overseas host institution) and a variety of language measures (proficiency tests, program qualifying exams, learning style or aptitude data). statistical procedures used are outlined, and results are charted and discussed. it was found that certain student characteristics were predictive of language gains abroad, including gender, experience in learning other foreign languages, and command of grammar and reading skills. implications are seen for student preparation and selection, in-country program design, and second-language instruction in general. a brief bibliography and author notes are included. "abstractNote": "Longitudinal studies that measure the impact of study abroad programs are essential to improving our understanding of the effectiveness of international education. The focus of the current research is on the development of cross-cultural sensitivity. Hammer and Bennett's [(2002). The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) manual. Portland, OR: Intercultural Communication Institute)] Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is used to assess of the extent to which a short-term, faculty-led study abroad program can affect the cross-cultural sensitivity of student learners. The IDI was administered before the students traveled abroad and then again 4 weeks later when they returned to the United States. Preliminary results suggest that short-term programs can have a positive impact on the overall development of cross-cultural sensitivity. Individual differences are noted and the paper provides some discussion of the impact of the study abroad program on specific subscales within the IDI instrument. The study concludes by highlighting areas of needed research.</p>",
