En montrant qu'il est possible de décrire les éléments liés au contexte de production des documents indépendamment de la descrition et de l'organisation des documents eux-mêmes, l'auteur en conclut que la notion de fonds d'archives ne recouvre pas une entité matérielle mais bien un certain découpage intellectuel d'un ensemble documentaire donné, n'ayant pour but que de servir les besoins d'accessibilité à l'information d'une clientèle donnée.\n In this article the author maintains that if the principle of provenance is to retain its pertinence for archival description today, the concept of the fonds will have to be seriously reconsidered. As a result of the increasing complexity of organizations, it becomes difficult, if not impossible at times, to trace clearly the correlation between organizations and their mandates on the basis of the organization of their fonds considered as an organic and natural grouping of documents, a difficulty underlined by, among others, Scott, Bearman, Lytle, and Evans.
