"note": "High-resolution planktonic foraminiferal census and stable isotope data from a core transect (ODP Site 1017, 893 and 1014) demonstrate remarkable similarities along the Southern California Margin during the last glacial (60-10ka BP). Modern analog technique and [delta]18O derived sea surface temperatures (SST) demonstrate SST shifts were regionally expressed supporting the hypothesis that the relative strength of local surface ocean currents affected the advection of subpolar and subtropical water into the region. Divergent alkenone SST records suggest the flux of planktonic organisms shifted seasonally during the last glacial in response to changing environmental conditions. When considered as seasonal SST reconstructions, summer/oligotrophic surface ocean conditions appear to have a muted response to orbital and millennial-scale climate change compared to the surface ocean during high nutrient/winter conditions.",

"note": "The aim of this review is to highlight the effects of ionizing radiation (IR) on genetic material in higher plants and its involvement in both adaptive processes and species evolution. Firstly, IR causes water radiolysis, which generates highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Detoxifying enzymes are immediately triggered for reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. DNA is the object of an attack by both the hydroxyl ions and the radiation itself (i.e., there is both a direct and an indirect effect). The effects on the DNA are detrimental both for the organism and for the long-term development of the species. Dose-dependent anomalies in chromosomes are often seen after irradiation. Although DNA repair mechanisms and checkpoints are involved, the double-strand breaks (DSB) in particular are often error-prone. Indeed, plant DSB repair mechanisms mainly involve the homologous and non-homologous dependent systems, and the latter often results in a loss of genetic information. Micronuclei represent a way for the cell to remove some of the resulting fragments.\nRepeated IR (either acute or chronic) allows plants to both adapt and demonstrate radioresistance. A first exposure reduces the effects seen at the time of a second exposure. An adaptive response has been suggested to explain this phenomenon. Consequently, in long-term and especially during chronic irradiation, IR affects the genetic structure of populations. Genetic variability is often reduced. This reduction may be associated with the demonstration of an adaptive process where, in particular, a species is subject to chronic stress. Thus, the genomic effects of IR demonstrate their likely involvement in species evolution.",

"note": "In marine and estuarine conditions, pH-dependent aquatic toxicity associated with Prymnesium parvum has been previously demonstrated with greater toxicity observed at higher pH. Recent research by our group extended such observations to inland waters in Texas, USA. Because prymnesins (prymnesin-1, prymnesin-2) represent the only P. parvum toxins reported in the peer-reviewed literature, we hypothesized that P. parvum toxins may behave like weak bases in surface waters due to the presence of a primary amine. Employing a widely accepted computational model (ACD/Labs), we predicted physicochemical properties to support interpretation of experimental findings, specifically focusing on the amine-containing hydrophobic portion of these molecules. Using different computational models, alternative pKa values for prymnesins have been proposed by others. Herein, additional examination of our proposed hypothesis identifies the importance of considering subtle changes in ionization state on the lipophilicity, bioavailability (e.g., logD, logDlip-water, Bioconcentration factor), and aquatic toxicity of ionizable chemicals over an environmentally-relevant pH gradient. If prymnesins represent causative toxins released by P. parvum as previously reported or if new toxins are identified in the future, a closer evaluation of our findings further highlights the importance of considering site-specific pH during environmental assessment and management efforts for P. parvum in inland waters.",

"note": "A laboratory study was undertaken to examine the temporal changes in physico-chemical properties during vermicomposting of sago industry waste. The sago industry waste was blended with cow dung, poultry manure at various proportions, kept for pre-treatment for 21 days and subsequently vermicomposted for a period of 45 days under shade. Earthworm species (Eisenia foetida) was introduced at the rate of 50g/kg of waste. The substrate moisture content and temperature were monitored regularly. The vermicomposts were sampled at 0, 15, 30 and 45 days for the assessment of temporal changes in physico-chemical properties. The data revealed vermicomposting of sago wastes, cow dung and poultry manure mixed at equal proportion (1:1:1) produced a superior quality manure with desirable C:N ratio and higher nutritional status than composting. E. foetida is an earth worm suitable for composting organic wastes such as poultry manure with extreme pH and high temperature and sago waste with high organic carbon in a shorter period of time. This study suggests that the sago industry solid waste could be effectively converted into highly valuable manure that can be exploited to promote crop production.",

"note": "The mineral-based filter material Polonite was tested for its PO4 removal capacity in column and full-scale systems using synthetic and domestic wastewater. Three long-term experiments (67, 68 and 92wk), operated under different hydrological conditions, were compared. The best PO4 removal capacity (97%) was observed in an intermittent saturated column fed with a synthetic solution (530Lm-2d-1) without organic matter during 68wk. An unsaturated column system using municipal wastewater (76.7Lm-2d-1) showed no tendency for PO4 breakthrough and effluent PO4 concentration was still low (0.2mgL-1) after 67wk. For a compact bed filter containing 560kg of Polonite and fed with 70m3 of wastewater from a single house, the average PO4 removal was 89% after 92wk of operation. The column experiments revealed that a design volume of 1-2kg of material of a particle size of 2-5mm was required amount for treating 1m3 of wastewater in on-site systems operating at target 90% P mass removal. Poor pre-treatment of the wastewater was suggested to reduce the phosphate removal capacity of Polonite in the bed filter trial, where 8kg were required per m3. To measure pH of the treated effluent water proved not to be a simple tool for determining when the filter material is exhausted and should be replaced.",

"note": "For the typical case of a pulsed contaminant emission into a shallow wetland channel, a theoretical analysis is presented in this paper for the decay of the width-averaged mean concentration under environmental dispersion. The velocity profile of a fully developed steady flow through the wetland channel is obtained with that for the well-known plane Poiseuille flow as a special case. An environmental dispersion model for the mean concentration is devised as an extension of Taylor's classic analysis on dispersion, and corresponding environmental dispersivity is obtained by Aris's method of moments and illustrated with an asymptotic time variation with stem dominated, transitional, and width-stem dominated stages. Analytical solution for the longitudinal decay of mean concentration due to environmental dispersion is rigorously derived and characterized with multiple time scales.",

"note": "Knowledge of the oceanic particulate organic carbon (POC) pool and of its spatio-temporal variability is important for understanding the oceanic carbon cycle. Until now, POC estimates from space have been restricted to the surface layer. An empirical algorithm is developed to derive the POC content integrated over the euphotic layer (POCZeu) from the near-surface POC concentration (POCsurf). The relationship follows a power-law distribution, , with A and B depending on the type of waters (stratified or well-mixed) and on the near-surface chlorophyll concentration. A global climatology of POCsurf and POCZeu is generated from the SeaWiFS archive between 1998 and 2006. The global patterns of POCsurf and POCZeu follow the major gyre systems and other large-scale circulation features. High surface and integrated POC content, around and , are encountered at high latitude, whereas low content, and , are observed in subtropical gyres. The mean global values of POCsurf and POCZeu over the global ocean are and . The standing stocks of POC are 3.921014 and over the first penetration and euphotic depth, respectively.",

"note": "The issue of sustainability and productivity of open communal rangelands compared to fenced rangelands is often subject to controversy. This study investigated differences in soil and grass layer variables between land management systems having high (communal land), low (government ranch) and medium (game reserve) stocking rates, and soil types (lithosol and vertisol or raw mineral). The results showed that differences in land management systems had caused considerable variations in most soil and vegetation variables. Soil from low or moderate stocking rate had highest K, Ca, P and N levels. Cenchrus ciliaris, Panicum maximum and Heteropogon contortus were most abundant in the low stocking rate, while annuals Tragus berteronianus and Aristida bipartita were most frequent on high stocking rate. There were differences in frequency of these species between soil types. Significant variations for most vegetation and soil variables between land management systems suggested grazing pressure differences might be the primary cause. This supports the equilibrium model, which stresses the importance of livestock density on the soil and vegetation dynamics.",
