Fans have always held a contradictory place in American culture: commercially necessary but unpredictable and potentially threatening to social norms. With the broadening of mass media target audiences to white working class people (especially women) by the 1920s, cultural authorities constantly sought to regulate the power and impact of fan activity, most often through gendered discourses that feminized and therefore devalued the tastes of these consumers. Nevertheless, as fan and audience studies research has shown, such fans were both industrially and culturally influential throughout the development of broadcasting and the internet, and their reception of media texts has both reinforced and subverted cultural hierarchies and social norms.
