            "abstractNote": "This study examines how social and motivational attributes may influence students' online learning experiences. Based on a review of social theories of learning and research about individual characteristics associated with motivation four constructs were included: social ability, learning goal orientation, perceived task value, and self-efficacy. A model was generated to depict the dynamic relationships among these constructs and the outcome measure of learning satisfaction. Factor analyses highlight four dimensions of social ability: social presence-students, social presence-instructors, social navigation, and written communication skills. The results of applying structural equation modeling to data from a sample of 110 online students show the importance of students' perceived task value, self efficacy, and social ability for satisfaction in online learning. How do we move discussants beyond initial brainstorming toward more focused, deepened dialogue that clearly supports a course's instructional goals? Garrison and Anderson's framework for communities of inquiry illuminates the critical interplay among social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence for learning in asynchronous, online courses [2]. This paper describes aspects of teaching presence in Virtual High School™ classes [3]: explicit teaching of how to engage in collaborative dialogue; collaborative activity designs and evaluation rubrics; and feedback that, supported by attention to maintaining social presence, helped to promote substantive, collaborative dialogue or cognitive presence.             "abstractNote": "This paper argues that the emotional state of students’ contributions need to be addressed in an online learning community. If feelings of fear, anger or isolation can lead to withdrawal or conflict then the potential for learning is reduced and a facilitator of an online course needs to manage these emotions at an early stage. Therefore, a validated method of assessment of emotional state is required. A method of assessing social presence—which includes emotional aspects—is tested through replication, amended and validated. The process refers to current literature around the nature of online facilitation and concludes with suggestions for monitoring the development of groups’ social presence in this medium.
