In the midst of all this production and consumption of information, two basic questions are emerging in relation to the current and continuing preservation of information resources and knowledge: What is the relevance of information professionals in such an informationladen and information-intensive society? How will this relevance be manifested? This essay explores aspects of these questions with reference to the seamless moment of time and space within the remembering process when communities become aware of, and confront, the instability, fragility, and ephemeral nature of memory. This is when collectivities must finally – very deliberately and selfconsciously – invest in, and provide for, the preservation of information initially as a social or economic asset, and subsequently, as an accessible civic good of public memory bringing meaning to society over time. To focus the discussion, the essay reflects upon the nature and dimensions of the critical decision-making experience, what many information professionals would typically term appraisal or acquisition, but what we will call the documentary moment.\n\nOur sense of the documentary moment in the digital age is that archives and archivists, in conjunction with others – those within and beyond traditional information resource domains – can continue to play prominent roles and fulfill key responsibilities both now and into the future. This essay will explore the option to focus on the public endowment and preservation of our foundational civic goods – the original documents of our decisions and actions, and the information in our books and other documentary media and artifacts – that are required within society to articulate, express, and share common goals, assumptions, values, and ethics; to provide individuals and groups with the capacities of social literacy necessary to enable their democratic participation within communities; and to ensure accountable public administration and responsible governance under the rule of law. Recognizing that in the Open Data and Big Data era, effective long-term scientific stewardship of data products requires an integrated and coordinated team effort of experts in multiple knowledge domains — data management, science, and technology — we introduce the following stewardship roles for each of these domains: data steward, scientific steward, and technology steward. This article defines their roles and high-level responsibilities as well as the responsibilities of other major product stakeholders, including data originators and distributors. Defining roles and formalizing responsibilities will facilitate the process of curating and communicating quality information to users. Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, Bruno Latour and others have shown how machine and human agents form tightly linked networks that must be understood as dynamically integrated wholes. Digital archives lend themselves to this kind of exploration of the entanglement of matter and meaning; content and device, human and machine elements. While influenced by the Marxian metaphor of the cog in the machine and the Weberian iron cage, Arendt presents a radical departure from previous conceptions of evil. While Arendt does not absolve bureaucrats from moral responsibility, she sheds light on the ways in which bureaucrats can become dehumanized and alienated from the ultimate goal of their labour through record-keeping regimes. Important criticisms of this theory as applied to records stress the importance of context, the agency of the record maker, and the ability of banal documentation to create a bureaucracy of good rather than evil. Yet, Arendt’s analysis of the nature of evil continues to provide insight into the minds of seemingly ordinary individuals who commit extraordinary evil, as its application to the current Khmer Rouge tribunal shows. Arendt’s conception of evil challenges archivists to keep the primacy of insidious evil at the forefront of appraisal, preservation and access decisions, and reminds us not to be complicit in History: Sustainable digital publishing of archival catalogues of twentieth-century history archives”. Based on the experiences of the Collaborative EuropeaN Digital Archival Research Infrastructure (CENDARI) and the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), the main goal of the “Open History” project was to enhance the dialogue between (meta-)data providers and research infrastructures. Integrating archival descriptions – when they were already available – held at a wide variety of twentieth-century history archives (from classic archives to memorial sites, libraries and private archives) into research infrastructures has proven to be a major challenge, which could not be done without some degree of limited to extensive pre-processing or other preparatory work. The “Open History” project organized two workshops and developed two tools: an easily accessible and general article on why the practice of standardization and sharing is important and how this can be achieved; and a model which provides checklists for self-analyses of archival institutions. The text that follows is the article we have developed. It intentionally remains at a general level, without much jargon, so that it can be easily read by those who are non-archivists or non-IT. Hence, we hope it will be easy to understand for both those who are describing the sources at various archives (with or without IT or archival sciences degrees), as well as decision-makers (directors and advisory boards) who wish to understand the benefits of investing in standardization and sharing of data. It is important to note is that this text is a first step, not a static, final result. Not all aspects about standardization and publication of (meta-)data are discussed, nor are updates or feedback mechanisms for annotations and comments discussed. The idea is that this text can be used in full or in part and that it will include further chapters and section updates as time goes by and as other communities begin using it. These data were drawn together in a single repository and are being stored there. The repository contains curated data which has been manually established byy the CENDARI team as well as data acquired from small, ‘hidden’ archives in spreadsheet format or from big aggregators with advanced data exchange tools in place. While the acquisition and curation of heterogeneous data in a single repository presents a technical challenge in itself, the ingestion of data into the CENDARI repository also opens up the possibility to process and index them through data extraction, entity recognition, semantic enhancement and other transformations. In this way the CENDARI project was able to act as a bridge between cultural heritage institutions and historical researchers, insofar as it drew together holdings from a broad range of institutions and enabled the browsing of this heterogeneous content within a single search space.
