            "abstractNote": "La photographie aérienne est un support très utilisé par les géographes pour reconstituer les dynamiques de changement des territoires. Bien que les clichés verticaux soient largement exploités dans les études géo-historiques, les clichés obliques, moins connus, offrent une meilleure perception des formes qui composent le paysage (relief, végétation, bâtiments) car l'angle de vue est plus proche de celui de nos yeux. Une base de données d'archives a été constituée dans le cadre de l'Observatoire Hommes-Milieux Vallée du Rhône, rassemblant des photographies aériennes obliques du corridor fluvial rhodanien et de ses affluents, issues du portail Remonter le temps de l'IGN. Un ensemble de 377 photographies obliques a été collecté du lac Léman à la mer Méditerranée entre 1919 et 1961, enrichi par des métadonnées détaillées et publié dans une photothèque interactive. Cet article de données présente les étapes de construction, les potentialités et les limites de la base de données. Les possibilités de réutilisation des photographies obliques par différentes disciplines scientifiques sont nombreuses. Elles représentent une opportunité unique d'enrichir les connaissances sur la trajectoire socio-environnementale de l'hydrosystème fluvial au cours du XX e siècle, d'éclairer l'histoire des aménagements et de comprendre les transformations paysagères profondes induites par l'urbanisation et l'industrialisation de la vallée du Rhône. Cette base de données d'archives offre également des supports de communication inédits pour le grand public et les acteurs des territoires.",

            "abstractNote": "Geotourism activities are increasing day by day for the purposes of research, learning, visiting, and geological protection. Today, georoutes, as cultural routes, are accepted as an important activity area that offers various activities to visitors who want to learn about the historical, cultural and natural heritage of a region and provides the distribution of income from tourism to large areas. With its unique cultural and architectural history, geological and geomorphological features, Safranbolu plays the role of hosting for one of Türkiye’s culturally important regions. In this study, it is aimed to transfer the geological heritage elements that make up the geotourism locations of Safranbolu to the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment and to determine the georoutes using the network analysis method. The proposed GIS route analysis reveals a great potential for geotourism in the region for geo-heritage asset detection in the digital environment, considering the economic benefits and time savings. In this manner, it will be possible to visit and protect almost all of the assets in the field by using this road map created during the analysis.",

            "abstractNote": "In order to assess the geodiversity of the Italian Peninsula, which covers approximately 300.000 km2, a semi-quantitative method based on the use of grids recording several indicators and indices was developed. The variety of geological, geomorphological, and pedological elements, characterizing the Italian territory, has been assessed with a two-step procedure. Firstly, the variety algorithm has been applied using grid cells with variable size, related to the spatial resolution of the input data, then the resulting variety values were averaged with a fixed cell size functional to the extent of the study area and the output scale of the geodiversity map. This procedure made it possible to preserve the spatial resolution of the input data (Digital Terrain Model, lithological and soil maps) providing as output a geodiversity map that faithfully reproduces the features of the Italian territory. In case of discrete data (rivers, lakes, glaciers, etc.), a procedure that assigns to each cell the maximum area or length values out of all its elements has been implemented. It made possible to preserve the hydrological elements that shape the landscape (e.g., the longest rivers, largest lakes, etc.) and represent important freshwater resource. An overview of the geographical distribution of geodiversity classes over the whole Italian territory has been elaborated. The resulting geodiversity map is a valuable tool for environmental planning, in particular for the identification of areas to be preserved, for the proper management of geo-resources and natural services.",

            "abstractNote": "One of the main missions of the Geoparks is to sensibilize the inhabitants of the protected territories to the rich geoheritage that surrounds them through numerous educational activities, such as guided tours of geological sites, thematic workshops on Quercy paleontology, or training courses for schoolchildren and professionals. However, it can sometimes be difficult to convey important concepts and information without adapted educational material. The paleontological heritage of the Geopark UNESCO Causses du Quercy is extremely rich, but also extremely fragile, with many unique and precious fossils that are difficult to valorize. 3D printing of these exceptional pieces after being scanned is an efficient method to overcome this problem. 3D printing is now regularly used in educational operations on the geopark territory. In a span of a year, we have already observed several positive outcomes from the use of these prints. In particular, the public, both scholars and general public, is more receptive and more active during the educational activities offered by the Geopark teams, and the information is thus more easily transmitted. Also, the prints allow us to illustrate concepts or information that is otherwise more difficult to explain. Finally, this technique allows us to put a fragile and previously inaccessible geoheritage within reach of everyone, which is an ideal window to make the public understand its value and richness.",

            "abstractNote": "In Wales some 500 km (42%) of coastline has been designated as heritage coasts (HCs) and these areas are under increasing pressure from human activities. A ‘Coastal Scenic Evaluation System’, utilising a checklist of 26 physical and human use parameters, was applied at 500 m intervals along the 23 km Glamorgan Heritage Coast (GHC) to assess aesthetic changes within the HC boundaries. The technique utilised fuzzy logic analyses to quantify inherent uncertainties and subjectivities. Results at the 47 sites were differentiated into five classes by a decision evaluation parameter (D) – Class 1: (D≥ 0.85), none found; Class 2: (D≥ 0.65 and <0.85), n= 3; Class 3: (D≥ 0.4 and <0.65), n= 26; Class 4: (D≥ 0 and <0.4), n= 13; and Class 5 (D < 0), n= 5. An overall GHC D  value was determined as 0.41 (Class 3) and therefore classified as mainly natural with little outstanding landscape features. As HC boundary status lies between the ‘good’ and ‘very good’, the median value of Steer's classic work, it suggests that all HC areas should have a D value >0.53. Results demonstrated distinct variations in scenic quality and analysis showed that site D values varied from 0.84 (Class 2) to –0.2 (Class 5) along the coastline. D  values were lowest at the eastern boundary and the location of a power station and litter on the beach were significant contributors to the low scenic value. The first 17 sites within 8.5 km of the eastern boundary represented 100% of the Class 5 sites and 77% of Class 4 sites. The mean GHC D value for the remaining 30 sites was 0.57, which complies with HC classification according to this technique. Therefore, results cast doubt on the validity of current designated boundaries.",

Whilst the structured nature of classrooms, traditional lectures and laboratory practicals obviously still dominate geoscience teaching, and core outdoor field trips and independent mapping/research are of paramount importance, more innovative complementary learning, teaching and research technologies are being developed by a wide variety of computer software developers, practitioners and educationalists.",

L’article rappelle d’abord le sens initial de la masse d’eau en océanographie et limnologie. Puis il soulève les problèmes posés par ce récent changement sémantique : la perte du volume en trois dimensions, un fluvio-centrage au détriment des plans d’eau, le remplacement de limites mobiles par des seuils fixes. Certains problèmes de fond sont communs à l’Union européenne, mais la traduction française apporte une difficulté supplémentaire. Les auteurs militent pour une meilleure prise en compte de l’hydrosystème dans toutes ses dimensions et interrelations, ainsi que la revalorisation de la place des sociétés humaines dans les territoires de l’eau.",

            "abstractNote": "The detailed geomorphology of ice-free landscapes of Antarctica is key to understand how their highly fragile environments respond to climate changes, at different temporal and spatial scales. Despite the recent advances in geomorphological studies of ice-free areas, machine learning applications to produce landform maps are still scarce on the Antarctic continent. In this study, we evaluated the predictive performance of different supervised machine learning algorithms to produce digital geomorphological maps in Vega Island – Antarctic Peninsula region. We tested six different models: Average Artificial Neural Networks, C5.0 Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Supervised Self Organizing Map and Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor. We used an initial set of 54 geomorphometric and spectral predictors, from which redundant variables with Pearson correlation coefficient >|0.95|were removed, and only the most important predictors for each model were selected using the Recursive Feature Elimination. For training, we ran each model 100 times and predictions were assessed by the Kappa and Global Accuracy values. The best predictors were the Red Edge 6 and SWIR 11 bands, roughness concentration index, elevation and drainage density. The decision trees C5.0 and Random Forest had the best performance, with average validation Kappa of 0.85 ± 0.03 and 0.84 ± 0.03 respectively, evidencing excellent prediction. Despite the similar performance, Random Forest showed greater uncertainty degree and accuracy when classifying complex landforms, attesting its great robustness. From sensitivity and specificity values, we observed that the glaciers and talus showed higher accuracy, whereas cryoplanated platforms and scree slopes had the worst classification. The presented methodology optimized the classification by selecting the most important predictors, assessing accuracy and evaluating uncertainty. The results indicated that machine learning methods have great potential to produce geomorphological mappings in the Antarctic ice-free areas, as a promising tool to provide detailed information on remote, harsh polar environments.",

            "abstractNote": "Imagined concepts – made real by down-to-earth field verification, validated modelling, and using available technologies and empirical methods – are fundamental to research outcomes in geomorphology. This paper reviews the functions that consequential concepts have served: as overall driving and embracing stimuli, or playing permissive roles at lower levels within projects; when they have come to the fore and declined in usage; how knowledge of them gets spread and tested; and where needs seem to be driving for the future. Within fluvial geomorphology there is demonstrably a multiplicity of conceptual approaches. Modern times also now involve greater external appraisal including financial and management control and research and teaching quality assessments. These are taking place in parallel with novel environmental changes that themselves pose new needs for hazard understandings and safeguarding. Challenges to address for practical reasons include forecasting the likely future geomorphic effects of climate change, tracking system impacts from the spread of human hardware across landscapes, and monitoring pollutant incursions into fluvial systems. Nevertheless, conceptual progress in understanding is also fundamentally dependent on advancing ‘blue skies’ research objectives. In a changing world, geomorphology has to pursue holistic goals and the multi-temporal and multi-scale spatial appreciation of landform development, and how this relates to other changing global systems, but also to grow what it conceives of doing for the public good.",

            "abstractNote": "Assessment techniques such as cost-benefit analysis are used to evaluate and approve public sector projects and decide among different design alternatives. Therefore, they have a considerable influence on the materiality, performance and reception of infrastructural landscapes. This paper analyses the dynamic interaction of assessment techniques with other forces and modes of knowledge that produce the built environment using the historic case study of the Ayalon Project in Israel. The project transformed a seasonal river into a depressed urban expressway, railroad, and flood control facility. The research opens the ‘black box’ of cost-benefit, multiple-criteria and risk analysis to reconstruct the complex chain of decisions that shaped the regulation canal, whose periodic flooding is regarded as a national scandal. Its main conclusion is that the recursive activation of these portable techniques contributed to the Ayalon’s unstable performance and landscape singularity.",

            "abstractNote": "Geodiversity assessment is recent and is passing through a stage of methodological development and consolidation. With rapid environmental change, improving the developmental states of geodiversity assessment is of paramount importance. A scientometric analysis is presented to identify knowledge gaps, current trends and avenues for future research in quantitative geodiversity assessment literature. The study is categorised into three areas of analysis: (a) methodological intentions of geodiversity assessment, (b) current trends in geodiversity assessment methods and (c) current geographic trends. A ranking tool was developed to determine whether the current methodological intentions of geodiversity assessments trend towards combined geodiversity and biodiversity assessments or towards the independent assessment of geodiversity. Results showed that about 50% of publications independently assessed geodiversity with no consideration for biodiversity, 32% discussed or reviewed geodiversity by mentioning potential links to biodiversity and 12% more strongly linked geodiversity assessment to biodiversity assessment. Tools used by scholars to determine geodiversity values varied from statistical through to the more frequently adopted geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analytical software approaches. Study sites selected for geodiversity assessments were predominantly terrestrial at the state-wide scale. Marine assessments, or seabed geodiversity, were mostly absent from the literature, with only two publications found. Brazil in South America had many geodiversity assessments and European scholars have played crucial roles in the development of quantitative geodiversity assessment in recent years. Subsequent research will benefit from developing a unified geodiversity assessment approach, reaching a consensus on an accepted definition and standardising the geodiversity concept, broadening research site environment types and developing strategies to promote further international and intranational collaboration.",

            "abstractNote": "Si la plupart des reliefs externes peuvent être saisis, d’un « seul » coup d’œil, pour peu que l’on se place au bon endroit, une grotte au contraire ne peut jamais être vue dans sa totalité. Parcourue et mesurée, la grotte – et par extension l’endokarst – ne peut être perçue que par bribes qui, une fois assemblées, construisent une représentation factuelle : une topographie, une carte ou une image. Toute représentation d’une grotte est ainsi une image construite depuis un parcours nécessairement souterrain, donc intérieur. Les premières représentations des milieux souterrains mêlent vues cavalières et écorchés puis, à partir du XIXe siècle, des principes de plus en plus normalisés ont conduit à l’établissement de plans, de coupes et de sections. Au cours du XXe siècle, des essais ont permis de rendre compte de la complexité du karst (maquettes 3D, perspectives). Les topographies (coupe, carte morphogénique, etc.) restent, quant à elles, très codifiées pour analyser l’emboîtement des morphologies et des processus souterrains. À la fin du XXe siècle, l’arrivée des technologies 3D (topographie spéléologique numérique, lasergrammétrie, photogrammétrie) a permis la production de nouvelles images, parfois véritables clones numériques des grottes. Ces images souvent spectaculaires, ne sont pas codifiées. Pour autant, elles fascinent en ce sens qu’elles offrent des représentations de la réalité, empruntant dans leur construction aux technologies de la réalité virtuelle et de l’animation 3D. Très techniques, ces représentations sont paradoxalement le support de nouveaux imaginaires qui vont parfois bien au-delà des limites posées par les concepteurs de ces images. Finalement, les observateurs du karst et des grottes n’ont cessé de produire des images qui mettent en scène un paysage, sont le support de discours et qui, toujours et encore, fascinent.",

            "abstractNote": "The water cycle is the most essential supporting physical mechanism ensuring the existence of life on Earth. Its components encompass the atmosphere, land, and oceans. The cycle is composed of evaporation, evapotranspiration, sublimation, water vapor transport, condensation, precipitation, runoff, infiltration and percolation, groundwater flow, and plant uptake. For a correct closure of the global water cycle, observations are needed of all these processes with a global perspective. In particular, precipitation requires continuous monitoring, as it is the most important component of the cycle, especially under changing climatic conditions. Passive and active sensors on board meteorological and environmental satellites now make reasonably complete data available that allow better measurements of precipitation to be made from space, in order to improve our understanding of the cycle&rsquo;s acceleration/deceleration under current and projected climate conditions. The article aims to draw an up-to-date picture of the current status of observations of precipitation from space, with an outlook to the near future of the satellite constellation, modeling applications, and water resource management.",

            "abstractNote": "Les aménagements opérés sur le territoire d’un bassin versant, notamment les processus rapides d’urbanisation et d’industrialisation, ont souvent un impact important sur les ressources en eau, tant en quantité qu’en qualité. La gestion intégrée des ressources en eau par bassin versant (GIEBV) est une méthode reconnue pour évaluer et contrôler l’impact de ces aménagements sur le régime hydrologique. Cette approche de GIEBV est d’autant plus bénéfique dans un contexte de données restreintes et/ou de mauvaise qualité. Dans un tel contexte, un modèle hydrologique peut permettre d’estimer les débits en rivière en tout point du bassin versant. Cet article étudie la capacité du modèle hydrologique distribué Hydrotel à reconstruire le régime hydrologique dans un contexte de données restreintes. Une application sur le bassin versant de la rivière Cau, au Vietnam, est présentée. Une méthodologie originale est également proposée pour identifier la discrétisation spatiale la plus appropriée pour la simulation hydrologique à l’échelle d’un bassin versant en fonction de l’objectif recherché. Les résultats obtenus démontrent que, même sur un bassin versant où les données disponibles sont limitées en quantité et en qualité, Hydrotel peut apporter des informations utiles pour la mise en place de la GIEBV. Cette application réussie d’Hydrotel dans une région tropicale soumise à la mousson et où les données hydrologiques sont restreintes permettra de promouvoir la démarche de GIEBV basée sur la modélisation des processus en Asie du Sud-Est, en général, et au Vietnam, plus particulièrement.",

            "abstractNote": "Topographic maps are powerful tools for the purpose of identifying land use and cover change (LUCC) as they are among the most reliable representations of past landscapes for the time prior to the existence of aerial photography. In light of the increased availability of historical maps, we argue that there is a need for a standardized process to assess map comparability in a systematic way in order to avoid, or at least minimize, the detection of spurious landscape changes due to incompatible map series. A full understanding of map quality, background and error distributions is fundamental to attain reliable LUCC results. The conceptual framework presented in this study considers the context, distortion and cartographic generalization of topographic maps. Furthermore, it includes an approach to homogenize the level of generalization of landscape elements (e.g. forests) from maps with different scales. To demonstrate its application, we assessed the comparability of seven topographic maps from Canton Zurich covering a time span of 336 years (1664–2000). Overall, for the maps of Canton Zurich, a wall-to-wall comparison of forest cover based on the topographic maps presented here can be problematic for the oldest map from 1664. Based on the results, a wall-to-wall comparison with the later maps is not recommended, due to its substantial distortion. Yet, after re-generalization of natural landscape elements, such as forests, a comparison based on landscape indices is possible, even for the oldest map. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that maps from the mid-19th century onward possess an acceptable level of accuracy. This framework can be applied to a wide range of maps at regional, national, or global levels, providing the opportunity to look at land cover history over multiple centuries.",

            "abstractNote": "Les transferts hydro-sédimentaires de surface qui ont lieu sur les versants influencent sensiblement les différents compartiments des hydrosystèmes et génèrent de multiples aléas (érosion des sols, pollution de l’eau, inondations aux exutoires, etc.). Dans les hydrosystèmes de faible énergie, tels qu’on les rencontre dans le nord-ouest de la France, appréhender les dynamiques d’écoulement sur les versants nécessite en premier lieu de s’intéresser aux rôles respectifs de chacune des entités du paysage (parcelles agricoles, haie, fossé, etc.) et aux interactions qu’elles engendrent avec les transferts hydro-sédimentaires. Dans cet article nous proposons une double approche (modélisatrice et géomorphologique) pour mieux formaliser les liens qui unissent la structure paysagère aux processus de transferts hydro-sédimentaires. Dans une première approche, un modèle développé sous Système Multi-Agents a été conçu en vue de développer des indices d’analyse spatiale capables de mesurer l’impact de la structure paysagère sur la connectivité structurelle. Les premiers résultats de cette approche exploratoire montrent la pertinence d’un tel outil pour une meilleure compréhension des interactions processus/paysage et ouvre des pistes pour l’évaluation de la connectivité fonctionnelle. Cette dernière est ici appréhendée par un travail de quantification des flux hydro-sédimentaires au cours de différents épisodes de ruissellement. Le travail s’est déroulé sur un petit bassin versant normand agricole (17,6 km²). Les résultats de cette approche géomorphologique mettent en évidence des effets de seuils hydrologiques, de disponibilité des stocks sédimentaires ainsi que des effets d’échelles dont la bonne compréhension est fondamentale pour mieux appréhender la connectivité fonctionnelle et la complexité des processus., The hydro-sedimentary fluxes that take place on the hillslopes significantly impact the different components of hydrosystems (soil erosion, water pollution, flooding, etc.). In low-energy hydrosystems, such as in northwestern France, to understand these dynamics, we first need to look at the respective roles of each landscape entities (agricultural plot, hedge, ditch, etc.) and the interactions they generate with hydro-sedimentary fluxes. In this paper we propose two complementary approaches (computational modeling and geomorphology) to better understand the relationships between the landscape structure and the hydro-sedimentary fluxes. In a first approach, a model is developed and based upon the Multi-Agents System (SMA) in order to measure the impact of the landscape structure on the structural connectivity between production areas and rivers. The first results show the relevance of such a tool for a better understanding of hydro-sedimentary processes/landscape interactions and opens perspectives for the evaluation of functional connectivity. The latter is here described by a quantification of the hydro-sedimentary fluxes during different episodes of runoff. This work took place on a small Norman farming catchment (17.6 km²). The results of this geomorphological approach reveal the influence of some hydrological thresholds, the availability of sedimentary stocks and the effects of scales, the understanding of which is a key requirement in order to better understand functional connectivity.",

            "abstractNote": "Le concept de connectivité est mobilisé dans plusieurs disciplines relevant des sciences de l’environnement, comme la géomorphologie ou l’écologie du paysage, pour mieux évaluer la réponse des systèmes environnementaux aux forçages naturels (e.g. climatiques) et anthropiques (e.g. changements de modes d’occupation du sol, construction d’infrastructures linéaires, etc.). La mesure et la spatialisation de la connectivité permet en effet de comprendre aussi bien l’organisation des réseaux de flux sédimentaires (géomorphologie) que des réseaux écologiques (écologie du paysage), notamment pour mettre en évidence dans quelle mesure ces réseaux sont aptes à propager des perturbations. Bien que les objets d’étude soient différents, nous pouvons cependant identifier des passerelles méthodologiques communes entre ces deux champs thématiques, notamment pour spatialiser les propriétés des réseaux écologiques et de flux sédimentaires à l’aide de la théorie des graphes. La représentation topologique d’un réseau sous forme de graphes constitue un support permettant de mesurer la connectivité via le calcul de métriques à différentes échelles. Pour illustrer nos propos, nous proposons ici de comparer deux exemples de protocoles méthodologiques, l’un visant à évaluer l’impact écologique de différentes formes d’urbanisation sur l’aire urbaine de Besançon, et l’autre visant à évaluer l’impact du changement climatique sur un réseau de flux sédimentaires dans un bassin versant alpin. Nous montrons au final que dans le champ de la géomorphologie ou de l’écologie du paysage, l’analyse de la connectivité constitue un socle méthodologique pertinent pour mieux évaluer les propriétés de résilience de systèmes environnementaux face à des forçages globaux (changements climatiques) ou plus locaux (activités anthropiques)., Connectivity is a key concept used in several disciplines, such as geomorphology or landscape ecology, to better assess the response of environmental systems to external forces (e.g. climate change or anthropogenic influences). Some metrics of connectivity provides the possibility to understand how sedimentary fluxes (geomorphological networks) and ecological networks (landscape ecology) are spatially organized. We propose in this paper a comparative approach in these two disciplines: especially comparison of metrics that describes connectivity. Although the studied systems are different, we can identify common methodological frames. The properties of ecological networks and sedimentary fluxes can be described through graph theory. The topological pattern of a network through graphs constitutes a first step to measure connectivity patterns by calculating metrics at different scales. We first present an example of a methodological protocol regarding landscape ecology: the example seeks at evaluating the ecological impact of different patterns of urbanization. Second, we present an example focusing on geomorphology, to describe the geomorphic evolution of a catchment in a global warming context. Finally, from a comparison between the two case studies, we show that, in both fields of geomorphology and landscape ecology, the analysis of connectivity constitutes a relevant methodological basis to evaluate the resilience properties of environmental systems in a changing environment.",

            "abstractNote": "Participatory GIS (PGIS) emerged from the contentious GIS debates of the 1990s as a means of political intervention in issues of social and environmental justice. PGIS has since matured into a distinct subfield in which GIS is used to enhance the political engagement of historically marginalized people and to shape political outcomes through mapping. However, this has proven to be difficult work. We suggest that this is because PGIS, particularly in its community development incarnations, though well-intentioned in endeavoring to enhance the voices of the excluded, is inherently limited because it primarily aims to enhance the inclusion and participation of the historically marginalized by working within established frameworks of institutionalized governance in particular places. This, we suggest, has left this mode of PGIS ill-equipped to truly challenge the political-economic structures responsible for (re)producing the very conditions of socio-economic inequality it strives to ameliorate. As a result, we argue that PGIS has become de-politicized, operating within, rather than disrupting, existing spheres of political-economic power. Moving forward, we suggest that PGIS is in need of being retheorized by engaging with the emergent post-politics literature and related areas of critical social and political theory. We argue that by adopting a more radical conception of democracy, justice, and ‘the political’, PGIS praxis can be recentered around disruption rather than participation and, ultimately, brought closer to its self-proclaimed goal of supporting progressive change for the historically marginalized.",
