"abstractNote": "This article will examine rent gap production and negotiations through the establishment of two UNESCO Geoparks for tourism in Indonesia. The commodification of different geological landscapes was analysed through processes of rural gentrification as ‘build-to-let’ homestays and villas emerged under the auspices of local-regional governance brokering private sector interests under the aegis of post-reformation Indonesian decentralization politics. The consequent rent-gap brings about negotiated displacements that varies between actors, but form a crucial component in unravelling the process of rent-gap creation. Based on 32 interviews with a range of stakeholders in Gunungsewu and Ciletuh UNESCO Geoparks, we show how finances and local-regional governance power mesh in the production of these tourism destinations against state power. This production of tourism destinations signifies locally specific governance as the determining factors in rent gap production. This paper unmasks the powers at play opening rent gaps in commodifying landscape intertwining with national political regime.",

"abstractNote": "A multi-scale and multi-disciplinary method was tested in the Catalan pre-Pyrenees in order to understand the relationship between landscape change, landscape processes, and ecological and social characteristics of landscapes. The three scales, and their corresponding methods, help us understand the processes of landscape change: on a general scale, a standardisation due to forest spread; on a detailed scale, a fragmentation of non-forest habitats; and on a local scale, the regeneration and scattering of woody species. Major landscape alterations have been observed through remotely sensed data. Closed forest area grew 140% at the expense of non-forest habitats such as pastures (–75%) and cultivated lands (–95%) during the past 50 years. Ecological metrics show a landscape standardisation (SHDI divided by 3) and a fragmentation of farmed landscapes. These changes, following a spatial pattern based on topography, explain the dynamic of the woody species in residual pastures, despite the persistence of cattle grazing as observed during field surveys. Yet, the forest, which constitutes the matrix of landscape, is not stable because of competition between species. The landscape change is related to the decline of the population (divided by 4.5 during the past 50 years) and the agricultural activities (number of farms divided by 2 or 3 during the past 20 years), and the favourable mild climate. The sustainable development of this territory should make the objectives of conservation, biodiversity and landscape protection and the preservation of their Mediterranean features compatible, and support agricultural activities that will contribute to this biological diversity and cultural identity.",

"abstractNote": "In Wales some 500 km (42%) of coastline has been designated as heritage coasts (HCs) and these areas are under increasing pressure from human activities. A ‘Coastal Scenic Evaluation System’, utilising a checklist of 26 physical and human use parameters, was applied at 500 m intervals along the 23 km Glamorgan Heritage Coast (GHC) to assess aesthetic changes within the HC boundaries. The technique utilised fuzzy logic analyses to quantify inherent uncertainties and subjectivities. Results at the 47 sites were differentiated into five classes by a decision evaluation parameter (D) – Class 1: (D≥ 0.85), none found; Class 2: (D≥ 0.65 and <0.85), n= 3; Class 3: (D≥ 0.4 and <0.65), n= 26; Class 4: (D≥ 0 and <0.4), n= 13; and Class 5 (D < 0), n= 5. An overall GHC D value was determined as 0.41 (Class 3) and therefore classified as mainly natural with little outstanding landscape features. As HC boundary status lies between the ‘good’ and ‘very good’, the median value of Steer's classic work, it suggests that all HC areas should have a D value >0.53. Results demonstrated distinct variations in scenic quality and analysis showed that site D values varied from 0.84 (Class 2) to –0.2 (Class 5) along the coastline. D values were lowest at the eastern boundary and the location of a power station and litter on the beach were significant contributors to the low scenic value. The first 17 sites within 8.5 km of the eastern boundary represented 100% of the Class 5 sites and 77% of Class 4 sites. The mean GHC D value for the remaining 30 sites was 0.57, which complies with HC classification according to this technique. Therefore, results cast doubt on the validity of current designated boundaries.",

"abstractNote": "Local planning conflicts can stem from perceived inherent landscape injustice. This article explores how conflicting community perceptions of such injustice can be analysed through local collaborative decision-making processes. A theoretical framework to analyse landscape injustice is proposed and applied to the Sitia UNESCO Geopark (East Crete, Greece). This paper thus examines whether, as part of the knowledge formation processes for the holistic treatment of landscape, landscape planning should explicitly analyse landscape visions, values, threats and injustice at a local community scale, and explores how their explicit consideration can contribute to planning processes in polarised communities. The case study results indicated that polarised (pro-environment vs pro-development) community stakeholders shared visions and values of their ideal landscape, including common root causes of perceived injustice. The analysis of landscape injustice revealed state and external interventions leading to local people’s loss of land ownership and procedural marginalisation from decision-making processes regarding the landscape and its future use.",

"abstractNote": "Due To the effects of climate change, tourist locations such as glacial landscapes are increasingly becoming last-chance tourism (LCT) destinations. LCT is paradoxical: although visitors to such locations possess high environmental awareness, their travel generates greenhouse gas emissions that threaten these destinations. However, visiting LCT destinations and observing glacial landscapes threatened by climate change may positively affect pro-environmental behaviour. This article aims to explore how experiencing receding glaciers can influence intentions to adopt pro-environmental behaviour. A quantitative survey of 284 visitors to a major glacier tourism site in France (Montenvers-mer-de-Glace) was caried out to test the influence of landscape, emotions, satisfaction, and LCT-related motivations on intentions to adopt pro-environmental behaviours. The results show that landscapes perceived as symbolic of climate change, LCT motivations, and overall satisfaction positively influenced pro-environmental behaviour intentions. To further encourage such intentions, stakeholders should promote practices based on education and experience.",

"abstractNote": "Landscape biographies have gained in popularity as a holistic assessment tool to enable local government planning and promote a community’s identity. To date, the approach has never been applied to the Republic of Ireland’s unique historical and cultural landscape. This paper addresses this omission by building upon former biographical approaches in other countries and adapting and applying them to the region of Kilrossanty in County Waterford as a case study. The new methodology intends to complement the current official approach to landscape assessment in Ireland which focuses solely on Landscape Character Assessments. The paper argues that the complexities of the Irish historical background require a more layered approach for which a biography is more appropriate. By conducting transdisciplinary fieldwork, an Irish landscape biographical model has been produced focusing upon the landscape’s structural transformations and identification of its authors who have been categorised to better reflect the societal and political strata of this previously colonised country.",

"abstractNote": "Ageing infrastructures and changing landscapes offer opportunities for renewal and adaptation. While traditionally seen as separate challenges, we think the integration of landscape and infrastructural renewal can bring about solutions better tailored to future needs. This paper provides a conceptual framework, called Infrascape, that can study and explain the interdependent infrastructure-landscape relationship. The Infrascape framework uses coevolution to combine nested levels of infrastructure (object, network, system) with a pattern-process perspective on landscape. We explored the analytical abilities of this framework in a case study of the Danube river landscape near Vienna, Austria. In our case study, the Infrascape framework helped identify multiple instances of coevolution between infrastructure and landscape. The coevolution of infrastructure and landscape featured in the Infrascape framework, clarifies the reciprocal implications of infrastructural renewal for landscape transformations and vice versa. As such, Infrascape forms an important contribution to the study and development of renewal strategies for sustainable infrastructure landscapes.",

"abstractNote": "Norwegian landscapes are changing at an increasingly rapid rate and therefore systematically structured information about observable landscape variation is required for knowledge-based management of landscape diversity. The purpose of the article is to present the first version of a complete, area covering, evidence-based, landscape type map of Norway, simultaneously addressing geoecological, bioecological and land use related variations. The type system used for the mapping is supported by systematically structured empirical evidence. The results of the mapping procedure, including the geographical distribution and descriptive statistics (abundance and areal coverage), are presented for each of the nine identified major landscape types identified based on coarse-scale landform variation. Within six inland and coastal major types, a large number of minor landscape types are defined based on the composition of geoecological, bioecological, and land use related landscape properties. The results provide new insights into the geography of Norwegian marine, coastal and inland landscapes. The authors discuss potential errors, uncertainties and limitations of the landscape type maps, and address the potential value of the new tool for research, management and planning purposes. They conclude that the results of the study might contribute to knowledge-based spatial planning and management of the unique landscape diversity of Norway.",

"abstractNote": "Permafrost—continuously frozen ground for more than two years—is one of the defining landscape elements in the Arctic. In the U.S., its development as an idea has parallelled mid-twentieth-century territorial struggles in Alaska and is inextricably linked to permafrost science and frontier engineering. Permafrost is more than a scientific category and engineering risk subject to correction and control; it is a foundation for dynamic socioecological and cultural expressions in arctic landscapes. In response, a relational approach is taken to examine permafrost’s cold, vibrant and plural materialities, with an aim of generating design possibilities that are attuned to these dynamics. In the Arctic where science continues to play a central role in determining putative futures, the article further suggests to creatively instrumentalise scientific forms of landscape inquiry, highlighting thermo-material interactions and multiplicities of arctic ground.",

"abstractNote": "This paper contributes with a better understanding of recreational landscapes as a conceptual coupling that lacks clarity and cementation as a legitimate and integrated concept in landscape and outdoor recreation-related disciplines, especially within Nordic landscape and outdoor recreation research. The approach in the paper is an explorative-theoretical one with a base in a literature review. The results show 294 identified texts using the conceptual coupling ‘recreation(al) landscape(s)’ in any of its variants and published in 155 different journals. Only a few of the texts offer detailed description of its meaning. Consequently, in an attempt to further the understanding of recreational landscapes, the conceptual coupling is explored and discussed in more detail with special attention given to different landscape relations, human-nature encounters and the relationship between landscape and place. A conclusion is that recreational landscapes must receive more attention and better anchoring in various landscape and outdoor recreation-related disciplines.",

Four propositions that have been employed in appraisal theory, and which can potentially be informed by these findings, are selected. An introduction is given on the scope of neuroscience and its models of aesthetic experience followed by reviews of objectivism, preferences from adaptation, the objective assessor, and direct perception. The conclusions of neuroaestheticians, even in their preliminary present state, offer the potential for clarifying these, and perhaps further, aspects of the theory of landscape assessment.",

"abstractNote": "This article explores stakeholders' understandings of authenticity in a selected historic landscape of China, and focuses on views about appropriate conservation and management strategies. The World Heritage listed site, Slender West Lake Scenic and Historic Interest Area, is examined as a case study. The study shows that various stakeholders think the originality of fabric, the representation of intangible values, and social engagement are three major indicators of the authenticity of this historic landscape. The finding leads us to suggest that, in China, authenticity is significantly influenced by specific social, political, and economic factors and by native Chinese philosophies and the cultural characteristic of naïve dialecticism, which partly explains contemporary conservation practices there. The case study also demonstrates that creative reconstruction has always been an important cultural practice in the history and geography of the Slender West Lake site. However, the superficial application of this cultural practice may create challenges for contemporary landscape conservation. The concept of dialectical authenticity therefore has implications for future conservation practices of historic landscapes.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract The recognition of landscape as cultural heritage has increasingly brought together work on landscape and heritage in recent years. In a practical sense, this has been recognized through effective landscape management strategies that have sought to encompass wider information on the historic environment and its associated values. Across Europe in recent years, effective assessment and management of the historic environment have developed through a conversation around such schemes as landscape character assessment (LCA) and historic landscape characterisation (HLC). Further work is required, however, in order to extend this conversation further in trans-cultural contexts. This paper explores the possibilities of developing such a conversation through GIS modeling that draws on both western LCA/HLC perspectives and Chinese Shan-Shui philosophies. We believe that a creative conversation between western and Chinese landscape heritage philosophies might be able to allow landscape characterisation approaches that use GIS methodologies to attain a greater depth of heritage understanding within their operation. Through trans-cultural exchange, therefore, this research explores how a novel and indigenous language (of Shan-Shui Characterisation) might enliven western Landscape Character Assessment, thus providing a productive conversation between different disciplines, philosophies and culture cognitions.",
