"abstractNote": "Weather parameters and soil moisture profiles were measured at an hourly time step during four agricultural years (September to October, from 2018–19 to 2021–22) in two Jessour (water harvesting cultivated terraces) of the same valley in Zmerten (southeastern Tunisia), characterized by an arid climate. One instrumented Jesr (singular of Jessour) was located upstream and the other one downstream. During each dry season, when crops experience water stress, the downstream Jesr had a higher available water content than the upstream one; in the downstream Jesr the soil profile moisture remained above the wilting point, whereas in the upstream soil surface, moisture levels decreased to below the wilting point. High accumulation/low intensity rains (causing saturation/excess runoff) flooded both upstream and downstream Jessour from 50 mm of cumulative rainfall, whereas high intensity/low accumulation rains (causing infiltration/excess runoff) activated the downstream Jesr from an intensity of 15.2 mm/h, and a combination of moderate intensity and moderate accumulation rains activated both Jessour from an intensity of 8 mm/h and a cumulative rainfall of 33 mm. We propose to set 50 mm of cumulative rainfall and/or 6.4 mm/h of intensity as threshold values for the activation of the Jessour system in Zmerten. However, significant soil moisture recharges can occur even without activation of the Jessour system.",

"abstractNote": "The ravages and disruptions of anthropogenic climate change have sparked renewed interest in water and its social worlds. This review paper examines four key emerging directions in political ecologies of water: legal geographies of water, Indigenous scholarship considering water as a relational agent, geographies of everyday and infrastructural water practices, and the growing literature on hydrosocial territories and waterscapes. This work builds on earlier attention in the field to themes of privatization, urbanization, and infrastructure, but broadens its analysis to water's articulations into the manifold hydrosocial worlds through which it flows. Recent political ecological research has thus shifted from the relationship between the state and capital to diffuse its focus throughout the networks through which water comes to be known, produced, enacted, and consumed. I close by suggesting fruitful future avenues for research: namely, theorizing the political ecology of water across Global North-Global South and urban-rural divides, and investigating the ways that both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic strategies of water governance travel between hydrosocial contexts.",

"abstractNote": "Numerous studies have evaluated maximum evaporation rates from open water bodies (Eo). However, relatively little attention has been paid to evaporation losses from residential swimming pools and outdoor water features. This study evaluates the combined impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and climate change on Eo for 1859 water bodies with total area 173,500 m2 on Palm Jumeirah Island, Dubai. Historic (2010–20) annual mean Eo from open water was estimated via the Linacre (1977) equation to be 600 million litres (ML). Annual Eo projected under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 by 2050 could be 627 ML under La Niña, 633 ML for neutral, and 675 ML under El Niño conditions. The present Eo equates to the water demand of 3000 people—or about 30% of the Palm's population—assuming 550 litres per capita per day. Moreover, replacing evaporated pool water with desalinated water contributes about 1.2 million kg CO2 each year. Such evidence enables authorities to reevaluate plans for future developments, including swimming pool density, and domestic water demand reduction targets under the 2036 UAE Water Security Strategy. Mandatory adaptation measures, such as installing pool covers, could be introduced to reduce evaporative losses. Further research is needed to estimate open water evaporation from the whole of Dubai as a baseline for assessing impacts of future developments and climate change.",

"abstractNote": "In this article, we define the concept of water dichotomy as the simultaneous occurrence of water excess (e.g., floods) and scarcity (e.g., droughts) within the same location. This phenomenon poses significant challenges to health, socio-economic stability, and urban resilience. This paper proposes a framework for understanding and managing water dichotomy, drawing on case studies from the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo, Tokyo, Singapore, Cape Town, and Mexico City, each at different stages of this phenomenon. These cases highlight the importance of decision-making in mitigating or adapting to the dual threats of water excess and scarcity. The study also aligns the concept of water dichotomy with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, identifying 32 out of 169 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets that address the water dichotomy impacts in urban areas. The identification of the SDG targets was achieved through an evaluation of whether they related to water dichotomy, a expert consensus assessment and validation by an expert-driven literature review. Our findings provide a foundation for strategies aligned mainly with the Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action) and with recommendations directed at researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to address the complex challenges of water dichotomy, promoting more resilient and sustainable urban environments.",

"abstractNote": "Extractivist practices threaten water security and with it, people's health and livelihoods. Numerous communities around the world are engaged in the strenuous work of resistance against mining. Through our previous research, we matured a sense that women are a major force behind organizing for water security, particularly because they often refer to an embodied sense of urgency to act against ongoing extractivism to preserve their waters and territories. Yet, a systematic assessment of the state of knowledge at the intersection of extractivism, water, resistance and gender is still missing. Thus, the goal of this article is to provide an overview, through a systematic scoping review, of the existing anglophone scientific literature focusing on water insecurity due to extractivism and its consequent community resistance, with a particular focus on gender. We identify 30 articles with only six explicitly referring to gender. All studies have in common the understanding that water insecurity is a manmade problem, particularly due to extractivism. Resistance is a great revelator of politics, and this systematic scoping review shows that dynamics of depletion and sacrifice zones—both in environmental and human terms—cannot be understood without considering gender and intersectional relations. Yet, an explicit focus on gender as an analytical lens of water and extractivism is still lacking in the literature. Importantly, this systematic scoping review shows similarities across case studies emphasizing the need to interrogate the transnationality of these phenomena.",

"abstractNote": "The São Francisco River basin (SFRB) is the largest hydrographic basin located exclusively in Brazil. It covers an area of 636,920 km2, encompassing seven states. From its source, in the Serra da Canastra National Park in the state of Minas Gerais, the river flows for about 2700 km to its mouth, on the border of the states of Sergipe and Alagoas. It passes through regions rich in natural and cultural resources that are considered strategic for its development. Its management has been a challenge for the different agencies involved in the environmental sector. Thus, the objective of this study is to quantitatively map the geodiversity services, in addition to showing areas of density of these services, in the São Francisco River basin in Minas Gerais using planning units denominated Hydrographic Circumscriptions (CHs), proposed by the Instituto Mineiro de Gestão das Águas (Minas Gerais Institute for Water Management) (IGAM) as reference. The methods employed were quantification and spatialization of geodiversity services by CHs and comparison between them. The results indicate that the integrated assessment of geodiversity services proved to be satisfactory, enabling the identification of the most prominent services in each CH, in addition to making it possible to innovatively support the management of water resources in Brazil.",

"abstractNote": "A landmark political decision recognising the legal personhood of a river provides insights into how legal pluralism may evolve and how relationships with non-human nature may be recognised into the future. The decision in respect of the Whanganui River in Aotearoa/New Zealand, although not a legal precedent, has resulted in a new and vital Māori/Pākehā legal arrangement, which, in addressing the injustices of the country's colonial history, may also address environmental challenges such as resource exploitation. Since colonisation in 1840, the Māori of the Whanganui River have been fighting to assert their rights in relation to the river. The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, made between Māori chiefs and British colonisers as the basis of future governance in Aotearoa/New Zealand, was flawed due to differences between the Māori and English versions of the Treaty. Conflicting expectations regarding the constitution and administration of ‘law’ emerged, as did incompatibilities between Māori and English ontologies, particularly involving interactions between humans and (non-human) nature. In 1975, a tribunal was established to resolve Māori grievances regarding application of the principles of the Waitangi Treaty. In 1999, the Tribunal settled Claim 167 (known as Wai 167, after the Tribunal), recognising Māori ownership of the Whanganui River. Subsequent negotiations resulted in declaration of the river's legal personhood; the enacting legislation was passed on 20 March 2017. An association of place-based law and the dominant legal system has been instigated. This paper explores how this less anthropocentric approach, in an era commonly called the ‘Anthropocene’ due to the influence of humans on planet Earth, has a critical role to play in environmental management, particularly in relation to water.",

"abstractNote": "Largescale “big” water infrastructure is once again at the forefront of the global developmentalist agenda and is receiving attendant scholarly attention. Given this parallel growth, now is time to take stock of current scholarly contributions and explore opportunities for future research. In this paper, I review recent developments and insights gained from research on big water infrastructure, and water infrastructure studies, generally, to highlight six key threads of current scholarship. These include the production of big water infrastructure as: (1) a temporal process embedded in colonialism and ecological modernization; (2) infused with infrastructural knowledges, practices and subjectivities; (3) a spatial-geopolitical process; (4) subject to infrastructural and environmental material characteristics and capacities; (5) producing uneven development and enabling accumulation by dispossession; and (6) a contested process of differentiated socio-material resistance. In reviewing this literature, I argue that these six research strands form key analytic considerations that could be employed by others studying the nexus between water development, political ecological change, and infrastructure. Before concluding, in the final section of the paper I present additional and ongoing future research directions including big water infrastructure as it intersects with socially differentiated human intimacy and embodiment, indigenous and racialized forms of dispossession, and financialization.",

"abstractNote": "Acquiring freshwater resources is a necessary component of sustainable human settlement subject to increasing pressure from population and climate changes. This sometimes scarce resource primarily comes from rivers, and international river basins (IRBs), where watersheds and watercourses cross political boundaries, are often spaces of great political tension and conflict worldwide. Such conflict potential has garnered interest from a wide range of research communities, and each emphasises public access to hydrologic data as integral to successful international management of IRBs. However; these hydrologic data, especially measurements of river flow rate, are often closely guarded state secrets. Satellites have been cited as a key technology set to challenge this data monopoly that have yet been unable to calculate river flow rate without some form of guarded ancillary data. Now, at-many-stations hydraulic geometry (AMHG) offers a means of circumventing data limitations without any a priori information, and the forthcoming NASA/CNES Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite also promises to estimate flow rates solely from its novel measurements following launch. In this paper, we explore how these newly available estimates of river flow rate could reconfigure water-management and interstate relations in IRBs, and demonstrate AMHG, for two cases: the Ganges–Brahmaputra and Mekong. For these basins we find that satellite flow rate retrievals will likely reinforce and favour state-level negotiations of water resource governance. Also, satellite flow retrievals can have the direct, concrete effect of improving hydrologic understanding of the upstream Ganges–Brahmaputra, a sorely needed advance that will positively benefit millions of Bangladeshis and affect state-level interactions between India, China, and Bangladesh. Finally, we avoid offering prescriptive water management solutions for each case, as local stakeholders will ultimately determine if and how such satellite retrievals will be used.",

"abstractNote": "This review looks at the issue of water commodification, and how such an issue is approached by philosophy and geography. I bring up recent geographical literature that examines water commodification, and then I proceed to explain water commodification through the scope of philosophy. I argue that David Schlosberg, Avery Kolers, and Iris Marion Young are a few of the philosophers that can improve the study of water commodification by way of their investigations of power and empowerment, and they can combat water commodification. I also assert that philosophy and geography are complimentary studies, and it is mutually beneficial for both studies to engage each other. Philosophy, and specifically ethics, provides normativity, while geography can provide the necessary descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative elements which can lead to change in the real world through ethical norms.",

"abstractNote": "Abstract\nIn early 2000, the city of Quito, Ecuador, established the Water Protection Fund (FONAG) to provide sustainable financing for the management and conservation of surrounding watersheds. FONAG was innovative in that it pioneered the use of trust funds in a voluntary, decentralized mechanism for financing watershed conservation. Since then, at least 15 water trust funds have been created or are under development in the Northern Andes, seven of which are in Ecuador. Ecuador's later water funds share many similarities with FONAG, but there are also important differences. This article analyzes the evolution of Ecuador's water trust funds since the creation of FONAG. It does so by comparing the development and effects-to-date of two of the most-recent Ecuadorian water funds: the Fund for Páramo Management and Fight Against Poverty in Tungurahua and the Regional Water Fund (FORAGUA). The article compares these newer water trust funds with FONAG and early payment for environmental services programs to identify four lessons regarding the financing of watershed conservation and related changes in community-level watershed management within Ecuador. The evolution of Ecuador's water trust funds highlights their ability to adapt to different socio-cultural and political conditions, including those that oppose the commodification of natural resources. As such, water funds provide an innovative model for providing sustainable financing for watershed conservation in countries like Ecuador where privatization is not possible for either legal or cultural reasons.",

"abstractNote": "Although the sustainability and wealth of Alberta is closely linked to the quantity, quality, and management of its water resources, the province lacks watershed-based inventories of its water supplies. The mean annual water yield for 287 gauged watersheds across Alberta was calculated for the period 1971–2000 by relating available streamflow records with the respective watershed areas. The percent contribution of each watershed relative to the outlet of each of the 16 major river basins located in Alberta was computed, which enabled the identification of the most important water-producing regions. The integration of high-resolution precipitation normal maps, available for the same period, enabled the calculation of mean annual runoff coefficients and the determination of mean annual regional water balances. These analyses resulted in important water resources baseline data, against which impacts of environmental and climate change can be compared. All data are available online in the form of spreadsheets and shapefiles.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this article is to analyze the advances of, and obstacles to, progressive attempts at modifying the balance of power over water through the use of the law as a tool for social transformation and to characterize the alternatives based on the ways in which they challenge neoliberal principles. The study of such dynamics using a broad perspective on the law which includes not only written laws, but also historical moments in which water laws were created and used, provides a platform to discern alternatives that in many cases might otherwise remain invisible.\n\nWe critically analyze the major legal contradictions and tensions in Bolivia, Colombia and Peru that suggest post- and counter-neoliberal alternatives. First, certain alternatives indicate a break from neoliberal principles based on relational ontologies (that avoid divisions between nature and culture as well as between individuals and communities). Such breaks include the statement that water is a common good or a common resource for the benefit of all, the goal to re-establish the human connection with nature, and support for a water provision system based on reciprocity, community and cooperative principles. Second, additional proposals that can be characterized as counter-neoliberal oppose neoliberal means or outcomes, such as proposals for more equitable water allocation or inclusive participation mechanisms for decision making. Both counter- and post-neoliberal alternatives also find much resistance in water laws; however, they do represent progressive alternatives that reach state laws and challenge neoliberal conceptions of nature.",

"abstractNote": "Indigenous voices in government-led natural resource management planning processes are often marginalised, misinterpreted, or excluded. Third parties, including government-employed geographers, can act as knowledge brokers in defining Indigenous values and interests so they might be included in government planning processes. This paper reviews and assesses a research partnership that evolved to document the complex and diverse ecological and hydrological values held by Ngan'gi speakers about the Daly River and connected water places in the Northern Territory, Australia. The development of trust through the slow building of a relationship based on place-based dialogue, a key aspect of participatory action research (PAR), created the foundation from which a mutually beneficial and respectful research partnership was able to, and continues to, evolve. Both research partners' perspectives are revealed here to articulate why the research partnership was deemed a success. Key lessons learned from the research partnership include the importance of trust, respect for place-based learning, researcher and institutional flexibility, and awareness of the intricacies of relationship building and the benefits that research engagement can bring to Indigenous people and communities. We aim to further dialogue among geographers and interested disciplines as to the potential for PAR methods to foster mutually beneficial Indigenous–non-Indigenous research partnerships.",
