An explosion of civil litigation was accompanied by unprecedented levels of imprisonment for debt, leaving many prisoners reliant upon a growing economy of prison charity. This article addresses the nature of such charity, its role in prison society and what it suggests about early modern attitudes towards imprisonment. It uncovers the range and scale of prison relief, from official aid to everyday begging and face-to-face alms. Charity was vital to prison life, and thus to securing growing credit networks. Yet by extension it was also a vector of moral judgement that left prisoners dependent, subordinated and subject to discipline. This article uncovers assumptions about the function of imprisonment for debt implicit in both practices of and commentaries on prison charity. The moral logic of early modern debt gave new disciplinary meaning to the prison, emphasized by the potential for social judgement inherent in charity. Theories of prisons’ punitive and reformative potential emerged to police social relations based on credit, trust and reputation. Most recent work on alehouse sociability has considered attitudes towards drinking and its regulation after the early Jacobean legislation; in contrast, this article considers attitudes towards drunkenness in late sixteenth-century England, including the views expressed in the official ‘homily against drunkenness’ and in the Sabbatarian pamphlet published in 1572 by Humfrey Roberts. Similarly, most work on early modern protest considers complaints against the activities of the protestors’ social superiors; in this instance petitioners complained about the conduct of their inferiors. The “Old Army” of the Commonwealth continued to be a sensitive issue long after 1660, and its disposal was neither as unproblematic nor as bloodless as oft-quoted sources such as Pepys might suggest. The redeployment of thousands of troops in Portugal, Tangier and Bombay is presented as a decisive episode in the consolidation of royal power. This redeployment, together with the great demobilisation of 1660–1662 had a significant impact on local communities, where demobilised veterans, maimed soldiers and war widows (both royalist and parliamentarian) had already become catalysts for economic and cultural tension. The author argues that the various issues concerning veterans were inextricably intertwined with wider political issues and had far-reaching consequences for the Restoration regime.", While probing what it meant to be an urban neighbour in post-Restoration England through an examination of Bridge Street, it considers the various motivations which spurred neighbours to petition civic authorities with planning requests and challenges and also to complain about nuisances. The chapter also focuses on one man and his neighbours on Bridge Street in Chester. Nick Alldridge has examined Chester parishes between 1540 and 1640. Although none of the Chester wills uncover a story as vivid as Bedford’s, clues in the testamentary fragments highlight elements of the petitioners’ mindsets regarding Holme and his building activities.
