Framing the issue of the disposition of the Scriptural heritage in broad terms, they describe what characterizes the Gospels and the Mishnah, the letters of Paul and the Tosefta. In other words, if they take whole and complete the writings of first and second century people claiming to form the contemporary embodiment of Scripture’s Israel and ask what they all stress as a single point of insistence, the answer is self-evident. Nearly every Christianity and nearly all known Judaisms appeal for validation to the Scriptures of ancient Israel, their laws and narratives, their prophecies and visions. To Scripture all parties appeal — but not to the same verses of Scripture. In Scripture, all participants to the common Israelite culture propose to find validation — but not to a common theological program subject to diverse interpretation. From Scripture, every community of Judaism and Christianity takes away what it will, but not with the assent of all the others.",

The Church has consistently referred itself to conceptions of Jesus during its history, and the world of scholarship has seen a renaissance in the study of Jesus over the past 20 years. In fact, Jesus' place in popular culture has been surprisingly prominent as a result of recent historical study. What is \"missing\" is not by any means reference to Jesus: what is missing is rather an entire dimension of his identity. In order for us to understand Jesus and his profound influence on global culture, we need to see him within the context of the Judaism that was his own natural environment. No one can be assessed apart from one's environment, but a variety of factors have isolated the study of Jesus from the study of Judaism. The \"missing\" Jesus is Jesus within Judaism.",

"abstractNote": "From Babel to Babylon explores the literary and historical character of biblical texts in the Torah, Prophecy, and Writings. It considers questions of composition and the writing of history. The book situates biblical texts in their immediate and distant context. It reflects upon their intertextuality and identifies their literary sources. Key events and figures are discussed in light of the politics of the age. Gender issues are explored, with attention to the different social roles of men and women and the character of the interaction. Theology is another important topic, and the character of God keeps changing to reflect the development of historical and prophetic traditions. The books ends with biblical wisdom, with the specific instruction to rely on the experience of the sage, whose superior understanding is greater than our own. This exhortation to listen to the text directs us back to the introduction, where readers are asked to pay attention to the principles the text sets up for its own interpretation.",

Until recently, the historico-critical methodologies of the academy have yielded unsatisfactory conclusions concerning the source of these laws which are woven through biblical narratives. In this original and provocative study, Calum Carmichael—a leading scholar of biblical law and rhetoric—suggests that Hebrew law was inspired by the study of the narratives in Genesis through 2 Kings.\n\nDiscussing particular laws found in the book of Leviticus—addressing issues such as the Day of Atonement, consumption of meat that still has blood, the Jubilee year, sexual and bodily contamination, and the treatment of slaves—Carmichael links each to a narrative. He contends that biblical laws did not emerge from social imperatives in ancient Israel, but instead from the careful, retrospective study of the nation's history and identity.",

The priestly conception of the relationship between God, people and land finds interesting parallels in the ideology of holy places evidenced in writings from the Ancient Near East.",

"abstractNote": "Interpreting the perennially perplexing sexual regulations of Leviticus 1820 in a radically new way, Calum M. Carmichael offers a key to understanding not only the texts themselves but also the nature of lawgiving throughout the Pentateuch. Carmichael identifies and offers solutions to puzzles such as why the lawgiver explicitly prohibits certain obviously wrongful acts (such as a son's intercourse with a mother), but not others (such as full brother with sister), why he censures children instead of adults in taboo couplings, and why rules not connected with incest (prohibiting Molech worship and intercourse with a menstruating woman) are included with rules about incest. Reading these laws against the events described in Genesis, Carmichael asserts that the conduct of biblical ancestors--from Lot's fathering of children with his daughters to Abraham's marriage to his half-sister--was the inspiration for the incest rules in Leviticus. He maintains that the Levitical codes cannot be separated from their larger narrative framework. Invaluable for biblical interpretation, Carmichael's approach also has broader applications, clarifying as it does the tendency of lawmakers to formulate general rules in response not to obvious but rather to idiosyncratic problems.",

In this magisterial textbook, preeminent wisdom scholar Leo G. Perdue sets each book of wisdom in its historical context, examining the conditions that produced the book and shaped its thinking. For the first time this collection offers a set of studies which will offer an overview of the role and function of the Psalms in the first century. Each chapter considers matters of textual form, points of particular interest, and hermeneutics. Together, this collection forms an important research tool for Septuagintal and manuscript studies, first-century hermeneutics and the development of Christian apologetics and theology. The contributors have all either written or are writing monographs on their particular section of the New Testament/ Qumran. In a number of cases, the particular chapter will be the first of its kind (such as Steve Moyise’s discussion of Psalms in Revelation).",

"abstractNote": "This study explores the vocabulary employed in the extant text of \"Leviticus\". The chosen methodology of rhetorical analysis (with an emphasis upon terminological patterns) shows a carefully composed text. The basic working hypothesis that \"Leviticus\" has been artistically structured around 37 divine speeches (\"and the Lord spoke/sad to Moses (and Aaron)\") with chapter 16 as its possible structural and theological centre has been substantiated both on the microstructural and macrostructural levels. The plethora of significant micro- and macrostructural terminological patterns suggests original literary cohesiveness and hence single-handed authorship. These findings are of special significance regarding the so-called \"P\" and \"H\" passages, a \"layer of priestly reworking\", and, even more, the exegesis and theology of \"Leviticus\".",

In this volume of papers read at a colloquium held in honour of Mary Douglas at Lancaster University in 1995, experts in the Hebrew Bible, Jewish law, comparative law, classical literature and social anthropology raise challenging questions about the composition, context and purpose of the book. Can it be read as an autonomous literary unit? How significant are its unique ethical insights? Is it law or narrative? Does it reflect actual Second Temple Period practice? How is it related to the Mishnah?",
