Since characteristics of the individual and the work environment are endogenously related to both collaboration and productivity, this study focuses on the mediating effect of collaboration on publishing productivity. By using the two-stage least squares analysis, the findings indicate that in the presence of moderating variables such as age, rank, grant, gender, marital status, family relations, citizenship, job satisfaction, perceived discrimination, and collaboration strategy, the simple number (‘normal count’) of peer-reviewed journal papers is strongly and significantly associated with the number of collaborators. However, the net impacts of collaboration are less clear. When we apply the same model and examine productivity by ‘fractional count’, dividing the number of publications by the number of authors, we find that number of collaborators is not a significant predictor of publishing productivity. In both cases, ‘normal count’ and ‘fractional count’, we find significant effects of research grants, citizenship, collaboration strategy, and scientific field. We believe that it is important to understand the effects of the individual and environmental factors for developing effective strategies to exploit the potential benefits of collaboration. These studies focus on motivations, mechanisms, financial costs and financial benefits of collaborative research while paying little attention to the impact of collaborative research on academic productivity. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to compensate for some of these shortcomings. First, we present a survey which includes responses from academic researchers of all the scientific disciplines. Second, we take into account and compare the collaborative relationships between university researchers, between university researchers and industry, and between university researchers and other institutions, especially government agencies, local governments and organized interest groups. And third, we assess the impact of these collaborative activities on the academic productivity of the university researchers.\nThe results of this paper show that collaboration, whether it be undertaken with universities, industries or institutions, may indeed increase researchers' productivity. We find this to be true whether or not such relationships begin early in a researcher's career. We also find this to be true whether or not the collaborators have an intellectual symmetry. The effect of collaboration on productivity varies according to both the scientists' geographical closeness to their partners and on their field of research. It was found that collaboration between researchers and industry had significantly more impact on productivity than collaborations between researchers and their peers or researchers and other institutions. Scientists in humanities were found to produce less materials in collaboration than scientists in other fields. And, scientists involved in collaboration aimed mostly at producing patented and unpatented products, scientific instruments, software and artistic production were also found to produce less.\nIn sum, given that collaboration contributes to the increase of scientific productivity, government decision makers and university administrators ought to encourage researchers to forge collaborative Neither mainstream secondary nor mainstream tertiary education seems to provide ideal education for Māori because of the relatively low success rates for Māori people coming from a Māori background. In this first part of two papers on Māori education in Aotearoa, a number of factors important to Māori education are identified and examined with regard to their significance in the achievement of educational success. The contention is that many problems have arisen because of a system that, for Māori, has generally tried to separate education from Māori culture. This separation has arisen primarily from an unwillingness of government to recognize the importance of Māori culture in the education of Māori people. The educational system in this country has been built according to Eurocentric cultural norms with the hope, and perhaps expectation that Māori will conform. It appears that many fundamental problems have arisen from the attempts by mainstream to build a monoculture, and in the process dissociate Māori culture from education resulting in both the degradation of Māori culture and the disengagement of Māori students from education. The repercussions of this dissociation may be far reaching affecting all aspects of Māori society and health. In two papers dedicated to the advancement of Māori education, poor educational performance and marginal economic success by Māori is attributed, in large part, to the imposition of culturally inappropriate Eurocentric expectations on the minority, resulting in identity loss and disengagement within the schools and universities. For Māori, the resurgent propagation of only one culture by government and cultural hegemony by the majority has resulted in social dichotomy. Māori culture has been marginalized and a monoculture now prevails driven by the determination of government to eliminate all race-based programs from the government agenda. Education and culture are inextricably interwoven and their dissociation from each other has been culturally detrimental. With the attempts by mainstream to impose Eurocentric cultural values and education on Māori, a dissociation of education from culture became inevitable. While a European education was needed to function in a Eurocentric society the end result, descriptive of all indigenous people emerging from colonization, has been one of disillusionment and disengagement. \n\nIn this paper the concept of reintegration of Māori education with Māori culture is introduced, and for this to occur three major new initiatives are recommended. First, Māori culture must be reinforced, rebuilt, re-established, and refurbished; this can only be done through the development of culturally appropriate educational programs promoted and delivered within the marae environment. Second, Māori need to assume the teaching of secondary school education to their children within Māori Wānanga that will allow seamless education for all Māori children from the beginning of secondary all the way through to the bachelor degree end of tertiary education; this may reduce disengagement and subsequent drop out of Māori from education, as well as reduction in their suspension rates. Third, a National Māori University should be established that will allow the development of Māori scholarship to the highest international levels, but within a Māori environment. A National Māori University will also assist Māori focus beyond national boundaries as they learn to integrate with, and actively contribute to, the emerging global society.", "publicationTitle": "", Here, we have re-examined the spatial learning of fyn-/- mutants in an open field water maze. Unlike wild-type mice, fyn-/- knockouts often floated without moving when placed in the water but could swim adequately when their hind feet were mechanically stimulated. Under these conditions, fyn-/- mice showed significant improvement over trials in locating a hidden platform. On a transfer trial, at the end of training, they spent a disproportionate amount of time swimming in the location of the previously hidden platform.
