In this paper, Samuel Alexander explores the elements and criticisms of the Voluntary Simplicity Movement, citing common justifications for choosing this way of life. Relative to the practice of voluntary simplicity, the following categories are detailed: money, housing, clothing, food, and work. In addition to Alexander’s segment on clothing, another aspect of his essay that is useful to my project is a part in which he highlights the misconception that simple living is primitive and must involve the rejection of technology. Alexander affirms that technology is neither inherently good nor bad, and can indeed serve as a positive tool for those choosing to live simply. Also related to my project is the section in which Alexander touches upon consumption in regards to meaning and identity, and suggests that commodities function symbolically as expressions of the self. While noting objections to the movement, Alexander concludes by asserting that adherence to simple living criteria is ultimately still worthwhile given the dearth of alternative approaches to consumerism in developed regions. Though this paper will not justify the design of my project, it will assist me in providing a sound argument that technology can aid in simple living despite the popular misconception that simple living (which is often just conflated with minimalism) encompasses an anti-technology sentiment.
