This article identifies the text from folios 1r–31r as the Récits d’un ménestrel de Reims and describes the manuscript’s particularities. The article focuses on two aspects of the Oxford version of the Récits : the division of the text into chapters, and the abundant presence of illuminations. The division into chapters complicates the manuscript’s classification according to Natalis de Wailly’s textual families, distinguishing it as a significant witness of the text. The emphatic use of illuminations contrasts with the dearth of images in most contemporary manuscripts of the Récits (as well as of the Grandes Chroniques ) , marking Rawlinson B 170 a special attestation to these texts . Materials of all kinds were collected, collated, concealed, condensed, correlated, paraphrased, reorganised, and repurposed in early medieval manuscripts. This volume of essays explores how knowledge was made in the early medieval book in the Latin West through two interrelated practices: collecting and concealing. It provides case studies across cultures and areas (e.g. exegesis, glossography, history, lexicography, literature, poetry, vernacular and Latin learning). 'Collectio' underpinned scholarly productions from miscellanies to vademecums. It was at the heart of major enterprises such as the creation of commentaries, encyclopaedic compendia, glosses, glossaries, 'glossae collectae', and word lists. As a scholarly practice, 'collectio' accords with the construction of inventories of inherited materials, the ruminative imperative of early medieval exegesis, and a kind of reading that required concentration. Concealment likewise played a key role in early medieval book culture. Obscuration was in line with well-known interpretative practices aimed at rendering knowledge less than immediate. This volume explores the practices of obscuring that predate the twelfth-century predilection, long recognised by historians, for reading that penetrates beneath the \"covering\" ('integumentum', 'involucrum') to reveal the hidden truth. century. They functioned as nonverbal signatures in trade networks, and in later centuries as quasiheraldic emblems for wealthy mercantile families. They are common in medieval architecture, and were widely studied in this context by nineteenth‐ and early twentieth‐century scholars. Their presence in books is more difficult to trace, and often crosses period boundaries as owners inscribed books acquired second hand. This article reveals a previously unexplored history of Tudor merchant’s marks entered into medieval manuscript books. A number of sixteenth‐ and seventeenth‐century merchants acquired luxury copies of literary texts produced in the fifteenth century, often circulating, gifting, or bequeathing them to others. Merchant’s marks functioned as symbols of professional identity in these practices of ownership and exchange. Devotees sewed these religious badges and pilgrimage souvenirs to the parchment of their treasured devotional books and manuscript illuminators depicted silver and gilt badges in the margins as if they are sewn to the pages. Medieval manuscripts are often admired for their aesthetic qualities, but many of them also served a practical use as instruments for the physical and mental wellbeing of the owners and their families. Manuscripts and incunabula containing metal badges illustrate how the owners used their books, which texts they favored, but also who collected badges and why. The depicted badges that only appear in richly illuminated and expensive manuscripts expand the knowledge of these metal objects that have been passed down in small numbers only. The painted motifs that have a more decorative and structuring role in the book fulfilled different functions than the original badges.
