A Toyota car alternator taken from a junkyard is characterized via an Open-Circuit test to evaluate its operating specifications. The car alternator is also measured to determine its physical dimensions. The acquired values are used with the generated voltage equation to determine the machine’s unknown rotor values— the product of the rotor winding factor and the number of rotor windings. Using the generated voltage equation with the determined machine parameters, the number of stator windings required for the machine to generate power at low speeds is determined. The alternator’s stator is then rewound and remounted to the body of the machine for testing. Inexpensive scrap materials are used to reduce the cost of the project and to simulate the experience of executing such a project in an environment where high-end tools are not accessible. The methods to disassemble the machine, rewind its stator and reassemble the alternator are noted and recorded to develop a guide that will be accessible to the public.", "reportNumber": "", He developed simple systems to raise water, like the shadoof, and later more sophisticated systems, such as norias, Persian wheels and qanats. The power to move such devices came from man himself, animals or the force of gravity. Over the years man learned to harness other sources of energy.\n\nThis publication has been prepared to help planners and engineers consider the potential and application of alterna­tive sources of energy for prime movers. Research and field application are continuous in many parts of the world, but the degree of success varies. As new information becomes avail­able, systems developed over recent decades, and even long before that, may be modified or refined to take advantage of new ideas and modern technology. It is an old subject, but innovations continue.\n\nConsequently, this publication cannot be regarded as a comprehensive treatise on the subject of alternatives for water lifting devices, nor can it be considered as the final state of the art. This region, known\nas the Pantanal, has very little infrastructure for isolated communities and members of these\ncommunities are often very poor and have a lower standard of education. Those who can afford\nit primarily use polluting diesel generators for electricity. In an effort to help these communities\nand reduce their impact on the environment we developed wind turbines that aim to supplement\nthese diesel generators for lower energy tasks, such as small electronics and basic lighting. These\nwind turbines are specially designed to be constructed with resources that can be found locally in\nthe Pantanal to make them low cost and easily maintainable. The turbine charges a 12VDC car\nbattery using a permanent magnet AC motor modified from a car alternator which includes a\nrectifying bridge and other circuitry.
