"note": "<p>This article showcases a potential future for the use of comics which is important in understanding how the medium has grown, especially, like the article brings up, the court case against comics where it was being determined if comics were bad for kids. In this use of comics, they are being used as therapy for children which is a different idea than what was held of comics in the 50s. There is a rising movement of the healing properties of comics and geek culture in general. The plots of comics and certain characters like superheroes are relatable to children so they can identify with situations that are happening in the plot and find a sense of comfort and belonging in the pages. While there isn't a widespread usage of comics in a therapeutic avenue, people are starting to recognize that comics are important and that there is nothing wrong with them so people are more accepting of them and in that acceptance, there is the potential for comics to be used in all therapeutic sessions for children.</p>\n<p>This is important because a lot of mediums such as music are used to connect with people, to find something to identify with so that you can explain your own thoughts and feelings so that you can point out a song that you connect with deeply and someone else can listen to it and start to understand what you are going through. That this is a potential future for comics is amazing because it just proves how valuable comics are.</p>",

"note": "<p>This article is interesting because it sheds light on the creation of the horror genre in comics and it explains a whole nother aspect to the court case against comics in the 1950s and the creation of the Comics Code Authority. It's important to understand that there are parts of history that is overlooked or glossed over but they are still a part of history and helps give a more complete picture. The accepted meta is that E.C. comics was the one to create the horror genre in comics but that isn't true at all. They helped it gain popularity- the #2 and #3 issues of there three horror comics were the ones that took off and spawned publishers to enter into that genre but they definitely were not the first ones in the horror field and their #1 issues weren't really that popular. Due to their #2 and #3 issues being the driving force behind the spike in popularity of horror comics, newer publishers did try to imitate their comics because people obviously liked them and people did try to out do the E.C. comics but they were not the first ones so they could be called imitators themselves since they weren't the first on the scene. And the popular idea is that the court case was directed at shutting down E.C. comics is false as well because the psychologist who wrote <em>Seduction of the Innocent</em> was trying to get rid of crime comics, not horror comics so when the Comics Code Authority was created, horror comics were just lumped in with crime comics.</p>\n<p>This article is important because it showcases an aspect of comic history that is not shown. People have their own ideas about things and when the majority accepts those ideas for their own, that's all that is shown so differing ideas are left out, even those that are true. So this article is just really great in showing that history can be glossed over and forgotten but we shouldn't let it.</p>",

The negative history that comics faced in the 40s and 50s is pointed out and the flaws with it are shown. All the arguments that people back then, such as comics promote teenage delinquency, is proven to be false as comics promoted and taught the ideals of American society so they were reinforcing the beliefs that were held and such they were good. Then the ways and the whys of how comics are good in the classroom and should be taught is given and explained. Comics help children learn more than because they bring in an aspect of creativity that children are used to and that they themselves try to do- tell a story using visuals and text. Not only that but comics promote literary criticism and in depth analysis that schools want but beat out of the children with the traditional methods of book learning so the children don't have any creativity to enjoy what they are doing.</p>\n<p>This is important is gaining the fuller picture of where comics are growing and how they have grown since their beginning. There was slandering against comics as promoting teenage delinquency which reached its peak with the book <em>Seduction of the Innocent </em>which was written by a childhood psychologist so people backed and supported his ideas on how bad comics were for children. The backlash against comics got so bad that a court case was held on if comics should be banned. What came out of the ordeal was the Comics Code Authority which had the ability to censor comics. This lead to comics being very simple in their story lines with a clear black and white and lead to genres such as horror and science fiction to be wiped out. So an entire generation had comics made for only very young children and older audiences didn't have a place in the comic realm.</p>\n<p>This article is useful to understand the background of the medium and how it developed into what we have today. "abstractNote": "Historically, comics and graphic novels have been marginalized as quality texts and significant mediums for study. However, in the past decade comics have found their place in educational establishments. This essay offers a brief literature review of attitudes toward comics/graphic novels as a medium and then explores the use of comics/graphic novels within multigenre units of study that challenge student's assumptions about genre and text. These unit examples include interrelated works by William Blake and Alan Moore and by Tori Amos and Neil Gaiman. The piece ends by examining the range of subgenres within comics/graphic novels, including traditional views of genre literature (mystery, western, etc.) and considerations of text as adaptation (graphic novel adaptations of traditional literature, film adaptations, etc.).",

"abstractNote": "This paper looks at some similarities and differences between propaganda art used by Germany and the United States during World War I. The first section briefly looks at aesthetic theory and addresses the philosophical question of whether war propaganda posters are, in fact, 'art' at all. Then images of various posters that were popular and widely published by both nations are shown and discussed. This paper concludes that while there are many thematic similarities between the posters used by both sides, there are also some important differences. The most obvious difference between the German and American propaganda art was in regard to the overall tone of the posters and the colors used in the presentation. The images used have been downloaded from a reputable website that depicts reproductions of the posters that were used during WW1. Understanding the nature of the propaganda used by each side can help shed light on the attitudes and sentiments towards the war held by political elites and citizens alike.",

"note": "<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This article identifies some of the significant types of villains according to popular thought in American society. The author argues that recording the types of villainous characters in popular use help us identify society’s moral values, since now we’re able to see what types of traits are typically assigned to (and thus associated with) villains.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Klapp identified two main classes of villains: one that is highly visible and defined by overt action, and one that is more subtle and hides their villainy from others. The overt class contains outlaws, bullies, troublemakers, rebels, dictators, intruders, and monsters, among others, while the secretive class contains traitors, liars, back-stabbers, parasites, shirkers, and corrupters. All villains in this second class are associated with cowardice, showing us that Americans value courage.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Interestingly, Klapp also noted that characters can be associated with villainy without any direct reference to their actions. Characters who are identified as “socially undesirable” (any type of outcast, including some minority groups) or described with certain terms (e.g. “bitch,” “rat,” “s.o.b.”) are much more likely to be villains than heroes.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This article is useful in understanding how we reflect society’s values in comics, as well as helping to show how villainous archetypes may influence popular thought.</p>",

"abstractNote": "The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series are American superhero television shows, based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. The shows have been in production since 2013, and in that time Marvel Television, along with ABC Studios, has premiered three series, with seven more in development. While the broadcast series have averaged around 7–8 million viewers, all MCU series have received strong critical reception.\nBy July 2012, Marvel had considered expanding to television after the positive response to Marvel's The Avengers, with the series that eventually became known as Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. By September 2013, Marvel was once again developing another series due to positive reception from one of their properties, this time from the Agent Carter One-Shot, eventually becoming the series Marvel's Agent Carter. In November 2013, it was announced that Marvel and Netflix would air live-action series based on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, as well as a miniseries based on the Defenders. In October 2015, ABC ordered a put pilot for Marvel's Damage Control, a half-hour comedy series, which was a departure in length and genre from the other series to date.\nClark Gregg stars as Phil Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., reprising his role from the MCU films. In Agent Carter, Hayley Atwell also reprises her role of Peggy Carter from the films. Marvel's Daredevil introduces Charlie Cox to the MCU in the titular role, while Marvel's Jessica Jones introduces Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, as well as Mike Colter as Luke Cage, who also leads his own series, Marvel's Luke Cage. The series have also seen various other cast and characters from films and Marvel One-Shots reprise their roles.\nThe first television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which premiered in September 2013 on ABC. It was followed by Agent Carter, which premiered in January 2015, also on ABC. The MCU also has television series streamed on Netflix, starting with Daredevil in April 2015, followed by Jessica Jones in November that year and Luke Cage in 2016. Marvel's Iron Fist will round out the individual series, before the streaming of a crossover miniseries, Marvel's The Defenders.",
