This is an important and stimulating book for a range of audiences.\" VISTA Vol 8 no 3How are social problems defined and responded to in contemporary society? What is the role of the media in creating, endorsing and sustaining moral panics? The term `moral panic' is frequently applied to sudden outbreaks of concern about social problems. Chas Critcher critically evaluates the usefulness of moral panic models for understanding how politicians, the public and pressure groups come to recognise apparent new threats to the social order, and he scrutinizes the role of the media, especially the popular press. Two models of moral panics are identified and explained, then applied to a range of case studies: AIDS; rave culture and the drug ecstasy; video nasties; child abuse; paedophilia. Examples of moral panics from a range of countries reveal many basic similarities but also significant variations between different national contexts. The conclusion is that moral panic remains a useful tool for analysis but needs more systematic connection to wider theoretical concerns, especially those of the risk society and discourse analysis.</p>\n</div>",

"note": "<p>ABSTRACT:</p>\n<div class=\"abstractSection\">\n<p class=\"fulltext_style\">This article is a critical reflection on the question of whether Twitter is a useful tool for journalists, based on close observation of The Guardian. It begins with a practice-based anthropology. Focusing on coverage of the G20 protests and other activities in 2009, it demonstrates that Twitter is a useful marketing and research tool for newspaper websites - one that supplements the traditional role of journalists as investigators and providers of timely information on news events.</p>\n<p class=\"fulltext_style\">The article then adopts a cultural materialist or Gramscian framework in which journalism's role in relation to the dominant ideology of contemporary capitalism is considered. In particular, it scrutinizes the hegemonic construction of Twitter within media discourse using close textual analysis of journalistic reports and features. Perhaps an equally important question to the one posed in the title, the article concludes, is whether or not journalism will become a useful ‘tool’ for Twitter.</p>\n</div>\n<table class=\"extenza-header\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>",

"abstractNote": "Twitter, a microblogging service less than three years old, commands more than 41 million users as of July 2009 and is growing fast. Twitter users tweet about any topic within the 140-character limit and follow others to receive their tweets. The goal of this paper is to study the topological characteristics of Twitter and its power as a new medium of information sharing. We have crawled the entire Twitter site and obtained 41.7 million user profiles, 1.47 billion social relations, 4,262 trending topics, and 106 million tweets. In its follower-following topology analysis we have found a non-power-law follower distribution, a short effective diameter, and low reciprocity, which all mark a deviation from known characteristics of human social networks [28]. In order to identify influentials on Twitter, we have ranked users by the number of followers and by PageRank and found two rankings to be similar. Ranking by retweets differs from the previous two rankings, indicating a gap in influence inferred from the number of followers and that from the popularity of one's tweets. We have analyzed the tweets of top trending topics and reported on their temporal behavior and user participation. We have classified the trending topics based on the active period and the tweets and show that the majority (over 85%) of topics are headline news or persistent news in nature. A closer look at retweets reveals that any retweeted tweet is to reach an average of 1,000 users no matter what the number of followers is of the original tweet. Once retweeted, a tweet gets retweeted almost instantly on next hops, signifying fast diffusion of information after the 1st retweet. To the best of our knowledge this work is the first quantitative study on the entire Twittersphere and information diffusion on it.",

Drawing mainly from the Dutch experience, the author first looks at the actual journalistic practices on the Internet and notices that network media begin to overcome the stage of `shovelware'. A fourth form of journalism is taking shape: `network' or `online journalism'. In the second part the author tackles the question of what relevance the Internet has in relation to public communication as a whole and which communication policies are and should be developed in order to stimulate journalistic production on the Internet.",

"note": "<p>ABSTRACT:</p>\n<div style=\"display: inline;\">\n<p>Twitter, a microblogging service less than three years old, commands more than 41 million users as of July 2009 and is growing fast. Twitter users tweet about any topic within the 140-character limit and follow others to receive their tweets. The goal of this paper is to study the topological characteristics of Twitter and its power as a new medium of information sharing.</p>\n<p>We have crawled the entire Twitter site and obtained 41.7 million user profiles, 1.47 billion social relations, 4,262 trending topics, and 106 million tweets. Once retweeted, a tweet gets retweeted almost instantly on next hops, signifying fast diffusion of information after the 1st retweet.</p>\n<p>To the best of our knowledge this work is the first quantitative study on the entire Twittersphere and information diffusion on it.</p>\n</div>",
