Results from this study are compared to a similar one conducted during the 1996 presidential campaign. The respondents were highly interested in politics in general, were very interested in the 2000 campaign, expressed a high likelihood to vote, and almost all did vote. The Internet appears to engage people politically as almost two-thirds claim that their involvement in politics has increased or greatly increased since they first became online users. Politically interested Internet users were more likely to report in 2000 than 1996 that they felt they had power to bring about political change, that they were very interested in the presidential campaign, and that they were more likely to vote. We propose a hierarchical framework for generating an influence score for each user, by incorporating information for the user from multiple networks and communities. Over 3600 features that capture signals of influential interactions are aggregated across multiple dimensions for each user. The features are scalably generated by processing over 45 billion interactions from social networks every day, as well as by incorporating factors that indicate real world influence. Supervised models trained from labeled data determine the weights for features, and the final Klout Score is obtained by hierarchically combining communities and networks. We validate the correctness of the score by showing that users with higher scores are able to spread information more effectively in a network. Unlike traditional internet media, the Web 2.0 platform facilitates not only users' ability to access information; but also their ability to comment on information already existing in the web sphere, and to publish or republish information. Over the last few years, users of social media have played an increasing role in the dissemination of emergency and disaster information. In this paper, we conduct a case study exploring how Thai people used social media such as Twitter in response to one of the country's worst disasters in recent history: the 2011 Thai Flood. By analyzing these user-generated messages we may assist local communities in obtaining up-to-date information; emergency rescuers in providing assistance according to the needs of the populace in a timely manner or government agencies in analyzing and developing methods to use similar information to better centralize, coordinate, manage and plan disaster relief both during and after the event. In terms of informal civic practices, advocates of this theory see the Internet as a means for the expansion of citizen deliberation leading to the formation of rational public opinion through which official decision makers can be held accountable. In this paper I question this public sphere conception as a democratic norm of Internet practice given that there have been sustained critiques of the deliberative conception for failing to account fully for power, and thus for supporting status quo social and political systems. I examine these claims and argue that while the deliberative conception actually pays more attention to power than some critics argue, it fails to adequately theorize the power relations involved in defining what counts as legitimate deliberation. Drawing upon post-Marxist discourse theory, I highlight two inter-related factors that are largely ignored in this boundary setting: discursive radicalism and inter-discursive conflict. I argue that to fully account for these two factors we can refer to an agonistic public sphere position that is also being drawn upon in Internet-democracy research and commentary. In particular, the concept ‘counter-publics’, which is deployed in such work, helps us take into account the democratic role of radical exclusion and associated counter-discursive struggles over the limits of legitimate deliberation.
