Five youth and nine parents participated in the study through in-depth interviews. Findings indicate that participants accessing physiotherapy services valued relationships with providers that were caring, consistent, and had good communication. The authors also found that being indigenous influenced the patients in ways that may not be obvious to non-indigenous service providers.",

"abstractNote": "This qualitative study evaluates the effect on mindfulness-based interventions on indigenous patients with type 2 diabetes. 11 Aboriginal patients from Manitoba participated in the study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The first part of the study, published in 2013, found improved health outcomes on indigenous patients with diabetes. This study (part 2), found that the mindfulness-based intervention program was culturally acceptable and that patients perceived value and positive benefits from the program.",

Reviewed articles full under two broad headings: epidemiology of pain, and healthcare access and utilization. Findings indicate: 1) pain symptoms and conditions are highly prevalent among AI/AN, 2) AI/AN are up to 2 times more likely to abuse opioids tranquilizers, and amphetamines than non-hispanic Whites, 3) culture may play a key role in the experience of pain for AI/ANs, 4) patient/health care provider communication is an important area of concern in pain and pain treatment, and 5) many native patients use traditional medicines for pain management.",
