"extra": "This white paper pulls results from three COACHE surveys (11-12, 12-13, 13-14) to determine trends in job satisfaction. Typically, associates who remain at that rank for more than six years are more dissatisfied than other academic ranks. They offer suggestions for how to support mid-career faculty. First, they suggest to frame the issue with data--meaning that surveys and interviews should be conducted to understand the nature of mid-career faculty at their respective institutions before developing support programs. Second, they emphasize the need to treat mid-career faculty as partners and to involve them in the research and development process. Third, they suggest framing orientations for the entire academic career, with making academic life cycles transparent. Fifth, they stated the need for career re-envisioning programs, to refocus faculty on their passions. Finally, they called to change the body of evidence needed for promotion, in order to better reflect the actual workloads of tenured faculty.",

From findings, they developed a framework for mid-career development which includes: organizational development, functional development, and personal development. Primary findings included transparent promotion practices and policies, developing mentor networks, having individuals undergo annual reviews, and supporting family/work balances.",

Key conclusions cited include that newly-tenured faculty receive remarkably less support from administration while having to take on more work, the absence of deliberate professional planning leads to research and teaching projects without thought of how they will affect promotion, an annual review process is the most effective method in helping newly-tenured faculty reach goals, department chairs need more conflict management and mediation training, newly-tenured faculty should seek professional support networks, that faculty value course release time and small grands, and finally that newly-tenured faculty are likely to neglect social and personal lives during probationary periods.",

"abstractNote": "Job satisfaction has been frequently studied in different types of work settings including higher\neducation; however, there are limited studies that focus on foreign-born faculty members in the U.S. Also, studies that focus on using self-esteem and mentoring to predict faculty job satisfaction are limited. The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members’ job satisfaction in 21 research universities based on their country of origin, marital status, faculty ranking, tenure, and mentoring status. Moreover, the study sought to explore the relationship among mentoring, self-esteem, and job satisfaction of U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members. The instruments used in the study were the Job Satisfaction Scale, Mentorship Effectiveness Scale, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results showed\nthat there was no significant difference in U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members’\njob satisfaction. In addition, there was no significant difference in U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members’ job satisfaction based on marital status, faculty ranking, and tenure status. However, the results showed that job satisfaction of U.S.- born and foreign-born faculty members who were mentored was significantly different than those who were not mentored. The correlation between self-esteem and faculty job satisfaction was positively correlated, indicating one unit increase in self-esteem would lead to one unit increase in job satisfaction. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis revealed that mentoring and self-esteem as a set was a significant predictor for faculty job satisfaction, accounting for 15.4% of the variance in U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty job satisfaction. The results of this study can be a valuable resource to institutions and institutional administrators in recruiting and hiring quality U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members as well as developing mentoring programs that may help to ease their career transition and improve their job satisfaction.",

There has been a paucity in the study of job satisfaction for faculty working in this sector of higher education (Kinser, 2006). Job satisfaction was measured by using the Job Descriptive Index (Stanton, Sinar, Balzer & Smith, 2002a) within the conceptual framework of faculty job satisfaction developed by Hagedorn (2000). The facets selected for study were: the work itself, salary, advancement, administration, and collegial relationships. The findings indicated that the job-satisfaction facets with the highest scores were administration and collegial relationships. The facets with the lowest scores were salary and advancement. Because these results were generally contrary to the scholarly literature on this topic, one primary recommendation was to continue this line of research using qualitative as well as quantitative methods.",

"abstractNote": "There is little empirical research about the benefits, privileges, and experiences associated with faculty at the rank of full professor. This dissertation focused on the experiences of seven black female full professors, in various higher education programs and departments across the U.S., who successfully navigated the faculty promotion processes and attained the highest rank in the professoriate. Currently, black women comprise 1.26% of faculty at the rank of full professor nationally. Further, the number of black women at this rank in the subfields of higher education (\nE.g., higher education administration, student affairs, community college, adult education) is so low that it fails to meet reporting standards for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).\n\nWhile the lack of research and underrepresentation of black women in the rank of full professor is problematic, even more troublesome is the unexamined racial and gender hegemony that exists in the upper ranks of the professoriate (Delgado-Bernal & Villalpando, 2002). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and understand how participants perceived their promotion to full professor and promotions effects on their professional status and influence in their departments, institutions, and fields of study. Particular attention was paid to the ways in which both they and those around them enact power to influence their teaching, service, and research activities. Of particular interest in this study was how racism and sexism intersected to create unique experiences of oppression and empowerment for black female full professors.\n\nResearch design revolved around black feminist epistemology, critical race theory (CRT), critical race feminism (CRF), and a critical race feminist methodology, which drew upon methodological practices employed in critical feminism and CRT. Specifically, the xitenets of racism as endemic, critiques of liberalism, challenges of ahistoricism, experiential knowledge, whiteness as property, anti-essentialism, and intersectionality were used to illuminate the ways race (and racism) and gender (and sexism), and the confluence of both, influenced the process of promotion to full professor and the ensuing experiences of the participants subsequent to promotion. Findings were drawn from three semi-structured interviews with each of the seven participants, as well as documents collected from participants, and institutional data.\n\n\nFindings indicated that race (and racism) and gender (and sexism) played a major role in the professional experiences, particularly those related to promotion to full professor and subsequent experiences, of the women in this study. Further, racial and gender hegemony exist to limit the power and influence the black women in this study were able enact. \n\nParticipants were able to articulate tensions related to being promoted into and persisting in a rank that is predominately occupied by whites and males. The women provided a narrative related to why their black female colleagues do not persist to the highest faculty rank, which included specific practices by faculty and senior level administrators that were (and are) incongruent with in\nstitutional policy, procedure, and, often times, common practice. Despite the negative encounters, the participants recognized and articulated the importance of their\npresence in the academy and in the role of full professor.\n\nBroadly implications from this study directly relate to the need to assess institutional promotion practices, procedures, and policies. Assessments may uncover systemic issues\nprohibiting the promotion of black women to the rank of full professor and access to its accompanying benefits. Future research implications focus on further understanding the role of full professors in the institution and the power and influence inherent in the position.",
