The activities of configuration management and version control are
particularly important for software engineers, since during most of a
system lifecycle they have to deal with a growing number of versions of
a single component, and to rebuild the complete system in different ways
using different components. These tasks are repetitive and trivial, and
they require a lot of manual work and accuracy. The paper shows how the
problem of automating these activities has been solved in a number of
software development environments. It describes the evolution of systems
for configuration management and version control from simple stand-alone
tools, such as make and SCCS (based on an underlying file system),
towards more integrated systems based on a project database
Creating software for work in the world has meant translating into computational models the knowledge and practices of the people who have been doing that work without computers. What people know and do reflects their particular historical experience, which also shapes decisions about what can be automated and how. Software thus involves many histories and a variety of sources to be read in new ways.

In the 1960s, customers either obtained software free from their
hardware vendors or wrote their own, specialized software. The idea that
packaged software might be an alternative to meet customers'
requirements met with considerable market resistance. The Software
History Center, dedicated to preserving the history of companies
launched in this environment, presents this collection of reminiscences
from 1960s' software entrepreneurs
Historians and software engineers are both looking for a history for software engineering. For historians, it is a matter of finding a point of perspective from which to view an enterprise that is still in the process of defining itself. For software engineers, it is the question of finding a usable past, as they have sought to ground their vision of the enterprise on historical models taken from science, engineering, industry, and the professions. The article examines some of those models and their application to software engineering.
