Korean school festival in Japan", "creators": [], "abstractNote": "If you've followed the news during the past few months, you've probably heard about the Japanese association of North Koreans called Chongryon and its problems with Japanese law enforcement. What you've probably missed from that story is the fact that, in Japan, there is a big community of Koreans with Northern citizenship who are not engaged in politics, and who simply want to live out their lives. These Koreans living in Japan do, however, struggle to keep their national identity alive and one of the most important tools to achieve this are schools for ethnic Koreans. Sometimes these schools are opened to the public and I couldn't miss the opportunity to see it with my own eyes. The 15th Annyeonghaseyo (“Hello” in Korean) Festival took place June 21 at the Tokyo Middle and High School in Kita-ku district of Tokyo. The festival was free and open to the public. lacks independence from the North Korean regime, has preoccupied itself with political activities in its “home” country. It has created and intensified long-distance nationalism among its members. Conservative Japanese government officials view North Korean long-distance nationalists as a threat to Japan's national security and regional peace on the Korean peninsula. Meanwhile, certain Japanese have reacted with acts of violence and intimidation against them. For these Japanese reactive nationalists, the perceived enemy or threat from North Korea is located inside Japan itself, in the form of Chongryun. Initially, the reflections were compared thematically with previously published narratives by people who had experienced racism. The results showed that students engaged well with the simulation and reported many experiences similar to those reported in the published narratives. This result suggests that, according to traditional measures, the exercise was as effective with Japanese students as it has been with white Americans in promoting awareness of racial discrimination. The written statements were reanalyzed, however, from a critical pedagogical perspective drawing on the concept that language shapes, and is shaped by, social practice and inequalities in power. This analysis revealed that the students' written reflections contained a discourse of diversion from racism. The findings suggest that language teachers need to be more critical when using racial inequality simulation exercises because a focus on the obvious engagement and increased empathy commonly reported may miss the subtle forms of oppression contained within language or society.
