"abstractNote": "This quantitative study, which involved development of a Value Creation Survey, examined the perceived value of leadership development programs (LDPs) provided by continuing higher education for administrators in colleges and universities. Participants were administrators at Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) member institutions. Answers to eight research questions became the focus of this study. Three questions—one at each level (individual, institutional, higher education enterprise)—examined respondents’ beliefs and perceptions about program value. Four questions focused on program aspects: success/helpfulness in developing leadership competencies, if they had priority status, competitive advantages gained through program attendance, and was there a sufficient number of LDPs. A final question was devoted to beliefs and perceptions of model effectiveness (noncredit, credit, and blended). The authors of this article sought understandings of how leadership, leadership development, intangibles, and value creation come together. Results are summarized and the article concludes with recommendations for future practice and future research.",

"abstractNote": "Since effective leadership is the core element on the survival of organizations, leadership development has been one of the major goals of 21st century higher education institutions. As future leaders, graduates of those institutions are supposed to deal with complex and novel problems constantly changing in challenging environments. In this respect, teaching leadership skills through university programs and finding the ways leading to the acquisition of leadership skills in higher education is one of the essential concerns of educators. Military academies are well known for preparing students for leadership positions. United States Air force Academy (USAFA) is a military higher education institution graduating leaders for the Air Force through a fouryear program. In this paper USAFA's leadership development program will be examined and cadets' journey from personal leadership to organizational leadership will be discussed on the basis of class levels: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.",

"abstractNote": "Leadership in higher education relies heavily upon the department chair. The chair is the link for faculty and students needing answers. When faculty members step into the role of department chair it is common for them to be unclear regarding the expectations for their newly acquired position. Literature in leadership indicates that professional development is an important component in preparing chairs with the knowledge they need to best serve the University. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to determine perceptions of the department chairs concerning their duties and tasks. This study also investigated the degree of perceived importance of department chair duties and functions. The perceptions gathered from the chairs provide insight into the relative importance of the duties and functions of chairs. The survey results will direct the planning and development of an effective training program for current and future chairs. All current department chairs throughout one large university (30,000) in the southeast United States were sent an electronic survey for the purpose of determining the areas in which training would be beneficial. The total population surveyed was twenty-seven (27) department chairs throughout the university. Twenty-three (23) chairs responded, yielding a response rate of 85 percent. The survey consisted of two sections. Section one asked the chairs for their perception regarding six functions of the chair. The function identified as being most important by the respondents was, \"Effective managers are more than just supervisors of tasks, they are leaders of people.\" Department chairs need to know the type of leader they are and how best to lead and serve their department. Section two asked the survey participants their perceptions of chair duties by rating the importance of each. Seventy four percent of participants gave the duty, \"Evaluating faculty performance and developing procedures for assessing faculty accomplishments and progress toward tenure and promotion\" the highest rating.",

"abstractNote": "Professional development (PD) workshops designed to help faculty move from teacher- to learner-centered science courses for undergraduates are typically evaluated with self-reported surveys that address faculty’s satisfaction with a workshop, what they learned, and what they applied in the classroom. Professional development outcomes are seldom evaluated through analysis of observed teaching practices. We analyzed videotapes of biology faculty teaching following PD to address three questions: (1) How learner centered was their teaching? (2) Did self-reported data about faculty teaching differ from the data from independent observers? (3) What variables predict teaching practices by faculty? Following PD, 89% of the respondents stated that they made changes in their courses that included active, learner-centered instruction. In contrast, observational data showed that participation in PD did not result in learner-centered teaching. The majority of faculty (75%) used lecture-based, teacher-centered pedagogy, showing a clear disconnect between faculty’s perceptions of their teaching and their actual practices.",

An example of such an approach is provided, from the state of Arkansas' Incumbent Worker Training Program. Various types of incentives are discussed, including grant programs. It is noted that building employee skills tends to serve the interests of both the employee and the employer, providing the former with opportunity for advancement and the latter with a more productive and skilled workforce.",

"abstractNote": "Increasingly, the traditional professional development (PD) model at 4-year institutions fails to meet the evolving needs of faculty. The traditional model of PD faces unique implementation challenges, including developing offerings that appeal to a wide range of disciplines and topics, dealing with limited faculty availability, physical/campus location barriers, and limited training staff. This article discusses a collaborative initiative across five State University of New York (SUNY) colleges and universities to develop a web-based, on-demand, self-directed PD opportunity that can easily be shared and replicated throughout SUNY and the world under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 2.5 license. The Tools of Engagement Project: On-demand Discovery Learning Professional Development (here-after referred to as TOEP) allows faculty to explore emerging technologies and Web 2.0 tools at their own pace through a variety of rich media and textual tutorials. As a part of the grant research, the interactive community of TOEP learners also reflect on how they could incorporate emerging technologies and Web 2.0 tools into their pedagogy, thereby creating a knowledge base of technology implementation.",

"abstractNote": "Over the past decade, there has been increasing evidence describing the difficulties of leading in the university environment, changes in leader roles and organizational practices, and the volatility of the higher education climate. The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of leadership for the leader-academic, the management of education change, the nature of leadership for middle-level leader-academics in higher education, and the nature of higher education organizations. The mainstay of the paper is formed by an analysis of the current role of women in higher education, the role of the leader-academic in higher education, the range of responsibilities attributed to the leader-academic role, and the complexities of leveraging preparation program reform in universities. "abstractNote": "We conceptualize leadership development as identity work and show how subtle forms of gender bias in the culture and in organizations interfere with the identity work of women leaders. Based on this insight, we revisit traditional approaches to standard leadership topics, such as negotiations and leading change, as well as currently popular developmental tools, such as 360-degree feedback and networking; reinterpret them through the lens of women's experiences in organizations; and revise them to meet the particular challenges women face when transitioning into senior leadership. By framing leadership development as identity work, we reveal the gender dynamics involved in becoming a leader, offer a theoretical rationale for teaching leadership in women-only groups, and suggest design and delivery principles to increase the likelihood that women's leadership programs will help women advance into more senior leadership roles.",

"abstractNote": "Leadership in Higher Education is as yet an under-researched topic but one which is clearly coming to the forefront in current higher education literature. Universities are under as much pressure as other public funded entities to change and adapt to the challenges we face in the 21st century. An important aspect of that change is to examine our conceptions of leadership and our identities as leaders and ask ourselves how we might make a stronger and more explicit contribution to developing the leaders of the future. On the one hand universities are charged with becoming more bureaucratic, more managerial with institutional leaders perhaps overly focused on performativity and revenue generation. On the other hand there are growing expectations of higher education to contribute more to society by strengthening its role in building leadership capacity and capability. This article explores different interpretations, viewpoints and epistemological approaches to leadership and leadership development and challenges readers to take more responsibility for engaging with the leadership literature and blending the scholarship of leadership and the scholarship of learning and teaching.",

"abstractNote": "The article focuses on the foundation used in developing future business leaders. The author develops a list of more than 25 sources of learning, based on the framework of the four approaches to leadership development programming. He states that the sources of learning alone will not develop leadership in leaders, it depends on the individual-level, learning style, organizational role, and self-efficacy. It cites several approaches of leadership development, including personal growth, conceptual understanding, feedback, and skill building. A table is presented that compares the four approaches to leadership development.",

Faculty come to the position frequently by \"default\" and without a ready set of management and leadership skills. The matter is of concern since chairs influence academic department strategy, culture, and quality in addition to performing an abundance of managerial tasks. As first-line leaders they are the go-to people for issue resolution involving faculty and/or students. This paper discusses the development of department chairs and proposes a specific curriculum of leadership skills. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this article was to describe and compare coaching models and to address their relevance to the advancement of leadership. Coaching has become a popular strategy for leadership development and change in complex environments. Despite increasing popularity, little evidence describes the necessity and impact of coaching. An integrative literature review from 1996 to 2010, retrieved through seven databases, reference tracking, and consultation with academic networks, led to inclusion of peer-reviewed articles on coaching models. Themes and critical elements in the selected coaching models were analyzed. The search yielded 1,414 titles. Four hundred twenty-seven abstracts were screened using inclusion/exclusion criteria, and 56 papers were retrieved for full-text screening. Ten papers were included: two coaching models from health care settings, seven from business settings, and one from a medical education institution. Critical components of coaching models are: coach-coachee relationship, problem identification and goal setting, problem solving, transformational process, and mechanisms by which the model achieves outcomes. Factors that impact positive coaching outcomes are: coach's role and attributes, selection of coaching candidates and coach attributes, obstacles and facilitators to the coaching process, benefits and drawbacks of external versus internal coaches, and organizational support. The elements of coaching models identified in this review may be used to guide future research on the effectiveness of coaching as a leadership strategy.",

The Leadership Readiness Index uses developmental personality style theory to establish categories of leadership readiness that can be used during the assessment phase of a coaching relationship. The article begins with an overview of leader development and is followed by a description of developmental personality style theory and its role in the construction of the Leadership Readiness Index. A brief discussion of potential uses for the index within the context of executive/leader coaching is provided. The article concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the index, future research strategies that can be applied to evaluate its viability and a summary of its potential contributions to evidence-based coaching practice.",
