Reviso voces que han cuestionado la relevancia y utilidad de la distinción: autores/as que 1. proponen su complementariedad; 2. juzgan artificial la delimitación; 3. defienden que lo importante es distinguir entre epistemologías o entre uso crítico o acrítico de metodologías; y, finalmente, 4. juzgan el ataque al positivismo como atávico, en tanto las metodologías cualitativas son ya hegemónicas en algunos contextos. A esto, y a partir de desarrollos derivados de la Escuela de Frankfurt y de perspectivas críticas latinoamericanas, sugiero que a menudo las investigaciones - tanto cualitativas como cuantitativas - emergen de una forma elitista y autocentrada de concebir y hacer ciencia social: los/as investigados/as no participan de la formulación del problema y raramente se sirven de los resultados de la investigación. Concluyo que distinción y debate son improductivos, obsoletos e injustificados (aunque se siguen reproduciendo y reificando en la formación académica). Lo relevante, defiendo, es una distinción ético-política entre investigaciones - no entre metodologías - orientadas al cambio social o a su obturación y ejemplifico el punto con la investigación-acción participativa y la sistematización de experiencias, en tanto metodologías que desafían la concepción y la praxis dominantes de ciencia social.
