            "note": "<p>This article discusses the significance of the Erie Canal to Western New York. It gives a brief introduction discussing&nbsp; why the canal was built, where it was built and what effects it had on transportation. The freight rates from Buffalo to New York were ten dollars per ton and traveling by road was one hundred dollars per ton. This significantly decreased the amount of money the farmers had to pay to ship their goods and it was faster than traveling on the roads. This is a good article for studying the history of Chautauqua county because it discusses the effects that the canal had on transportation and agriculture.</p>",

            "note": "<p>This was by and far the most useful source I found during my research.&nbsp; The history, published in 1904, provided 14 very good pages of information about the development of grape culture in Chautauqua County from its onset.&nbsp; Most of my statistics came from this source (and the other sources simply agreed with/supported what was written here), and nearly all of my \"Chronology\" page can be attributed to information found here.&nbsp; This book introduced me to the Brocton wine cellars, the Lake Shore Wine Co., the Chautauqua County Grape Growers Association, and the arrival of Concord grapes to the county in 1859 - all of which were instrumental in tracing the development of grape culture in the county, and each helped answer the question of \"why here?\"</p>",

            "note": "<p>This was one of the archival sources I came across in the Special Collections section of Reed Library, and it proved to be very helpful in figuring out how viticulture established itself in Chautauqua county.&nbsp; The accounts it provided were mostly about the first grapes grown in the county, the arrival of Concord grapes, the winter of 1872-73, and related information.&nbsp; Because this book was published in 1894, most of the information was still relatively recent (within the last 70 years), and could not be used to trace the grape culture's reliance on Welch's in the latest part of the century.&nbsp; It was, however, quite useful in attaining the information from the earliest points in the history of viticulture in Chautauqua County.</p>",

            "note": "<p>These interviews with Johnson Estate Winery (third generation) owner Fred Johnson were initially conducted to get information specifically about that property, for my capstone class.&nbsp; What I got from him, however, was so much more and it enabled me to put much of what I had come across into a fluid context.&nbsp; He explained to me the reason grape-growers like marketing to wineries or making wines of their own (to convert them from a perishable to a stable commodity), which in turn helped communicate to me the importance of the existence of wineries in the region, as well as grape-grower organizations (whose members fought alongside one another against the railroad companies or processors for better conditions and more quickly moving transactions).&nbsp; He explained to me what it meant to be a Chautauqua County grape grower (being that I'm not from the area, nor a \"farm boy\") and his perspective allowed me to get into the proper mindset for approaching this kind of local history.&nbsp; He also provided some of the photographs on my webpage - the older, \"artifact\" looking ones, including the early grape press and grape harvesting vehicle.</p>",

            "note": "<p>Helen McMahon's book provided me with more \"recent\" information than the old histories from the archives in the library, including how the Welch family sold their interests to the company in 1927, how the company was sold to investors in 1945, and eventually turned over to the National Grape Cooperative by 1956, which was critical to understanding the importance of that specific grape-grower organization.&nbsp; The information she presents about early grape history helped me form my argument about the building of the first-generation commercial wine industry, and how it helped to firmly establish viticulture in the region.&nbsp; She also presents information about how the railroad made it possible for growers to market and distribute table grapes (another part of my argument explaining \"why here\").</p>",

            "note": "<p>Dr. Swansinger's article focused on the town of Fredonia as a whole and its interactions with the Italian immigrant population during the earliest part of the 20th century, rather than specifically pertaining to grapes.&nbsp; Many early Italians were farmers, however, and certainly played a role in the county's grape-culture.&nbsp; The best information I took from her article was about the Depression of 1893 and how it effected local grape-growers (among them, the Italians).&nbsp; The Depression of 1893 almost depleted the market for table grapes, and she goes on to describe the perils that the industry was facing prior to the arrival of Welch's.</p>",

            "note": "<p>Dr. Dahlberg's analysis provided me mainly with the geographic/geologic/climate-related reasons that Chautauqua County and the greater Lake Erie Grape Belt is so suitable for grape-cultivation.&nbsp; Descriptions of the soils, the way Lake Erie acts as a temperature moderator and appropriate moisture content/humidity, and other features of the \"escarpment\" (a geographic term that Dr. Dahlberg also introduced me to).&nbsp; He wrote his dissertation on the subject in 1959, so his audience is largely scholarly and oriented towards agricultural students.&nbsp; The source also mentions the unique nature of the Grape Belt Region in that its the largest producer of <em>Labrusca</em> (native American) grapes and differentiates the region from other grape-cultivating areas on that basis.</p>",
