In particular, the performance of a grid based on the Taylor microscales for turbulent channel flow, is investigated, with the final view of facilitating an a priori determination of the mesh resolution required for LES. The grid dictated by the Taylor microscales is more cubical in the centre of the domain than the typical empirical LES grids. Furthermore, it is as fine in the spanwise direction as it is in the wall normal direction. Empirical LES grids, currently widely used, have a very fine (approximately four times finer) wall normal resolution and a coarse (about twice as course) streamwise resolution as compared to a grid based on the Taylor microscales. A remarkable feature is that the mean velocity and streamwise component of fluctuating velocity (classically over-predicted in coarse grid LES) and the wall normal fluctuating velocity are well reproduced on the new grid. The attempt of building an unstructured LES grid based on the Taylor microscale has been found very successful. In this paper we present an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework based\non OpenFOAM libraries to model spray injection dynamics. The framework accounts for primary droplet formation\n(based on a parcel method with predefined initial droplet size distribution), secondary droplet breakup, evaporation\nand heat transfer. In order to account for the interaction of droplets with turbulence, simulations were performed\nwithin the LES context with two different turbulence models. A systematic variation of the key injection parameters\n(parcel number, parcel size distribution) of the parcel method as well as the grid size was considered. Varying the\nparcel number affects the initial droplet size distribution which in turn, depending on the selection of the turbulence\nand the evaporation sub-models, affects: spray dispersion; spray penetration; and subsequent droplet size distribu-\ntion. These are generated due to temperature changes in regions where cold and hot flows are intensively mixed together. A typical situation for such mixing appears in turbulent flow through a T-junction, which is investigated here using Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). In general, LES is well capable in capturing the mixing phenomena and accompanied turbulent flow fluctuations in a T-junction. An assessment of the accuracy of LES predictions is made for the applied Vreman subgrid-scale model through a direct comparison with the available experimental results. In particular, an estimation of the minimal mesh-resolution requirements for LES is examined on the basis of the complementary RANS simulations. The most limiting factor in performing LES of real systems is the mesh size, which directly controls the overall cost of the simulation, so that the effects of mesh resolution on LES results become a key issue. In the present work, an unstructured compressible LES solver is used to compute the reacting flow in a domain corresponding to a sector of a realistic helicopter chamber. Three grids ranging from 1.2 to 44 million elements are used for LES and results are compared in terms of mean and fluctuating fields as well as of pressure spectra. Results show that the mean temperature, reaction rate, and velocity fields are almost insensitive to the grid size. The RMS field of the resolved velocity is also reasonably independent of the mesh, while the RMS fields of temperature exhibit more sensitivity to the grid, as expected from the fact that most of the combustion process proceeds at small scales.
