Battle of Nashville

\n

At a time in the war when both sides were looking for an advantage, Confederate General John Bell Hood hatched a plan to dash up through Alabama and overtake Tennessee, a strategically vital depot for supplies and transportation, which the North had gained control of early in the war. From there, the Confederate army could then enter Kentucky, Ohio, and other border states and put a clear and present threat on the Northern lines. His plan was stymied, however, by poor decision making and awful weather conditions. The two armies met first in Franklin, TN, which left Hood a technical victory on the battlefield but his already lesser forces even more weakened and depleted. General George H. Thomas, in charge of the state’s Union forces, retreated to Nashville where they could sufficiently protect the city center. Hood’s forces followed, and he decided to entrench outside of the city and force Thomas to make the first move. Thomas had an estimated 55,000 men at his disposal, more than twice Hood’s estimated 25,000. The Battle of Nashville was fought on December 15 and 16, 1863, resulting in a massive and decisive Union victory. Notably, the initial Union attack was led by two brigades of the 13th U.S. Colored Troops Infantry. The battle effectively annihilated the Confederate Army of the Tennessee, its second largest force. Hood’s attack on Tennessee also opened up the South for General Sherman’s famous March to the Sea.

It was one of his wife Mary’s favorite pictures and the one she felt best captured Lincoln’s actual appearance. Compare this photograph of President Lincoln with the picture taken by Alexander Gardner in April of 1865.
