A behavior mapping study and a survey involving 78 students suggested that the tables in the library hall were used inefficiently, mainly due to a need for territorial markers. Accordingly, we proposed the design and use of new tables that provided dividers (among other improvements), and this design was implemented by the university administration. While there are studies examining the reference management practices of academics and students, the practices of those not using RMS have remained largely unexplored. This article reports on the findings of a small-scale applied research project aimed at understanding the reference management practices of postgraduate students and academics in the Arts Faculty at Monash University. A questionnaire was completed by 81 students and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 students and 13 academics in the Faculty. Analysis shows that the reference management practices detailed in this study are individual and personal, and do not always involve the use of RMS. The reasons for adopting these practices are informed by a wide range of institutional and personal factors. RMS use itself is also varied, with few of the interviewees utilising all the core features of the software. Through in-depth interviews with 11 university students, it was found that students want subject guides that are clean and simple, and although students do not use subject guides often, they might use them more if subject guides were more specifically customized to meet their needs. In the context of designing subject guides for students, one size does not fit all, and librarians should consult with students and faculty to assess their needs and wants to create guides that are more useful, and more used., Cet article présente les résultats d'un projet de recherche qualitative qui s'est penchée sur les façons qu'ont les étudiants d'utiliser les guides par sujets, et sur ce que les étudiants apprécient et n'apprécient pas dans les guides par sujets. À l'aide d'entrevues en profondeur avec onze étudiants universitaires, il est apparu que les étudiants souhaitent des guides par sujets qui soient clairs et simples, et que s'ils n'utilisent pas fréquemment les guides par sujets, cela pourrait changer si ceuxci étaient conçus pour satisfaire leurs besoins. This article is a case study from Loughborough University in the UK to evaluate the use of a large open learning/social space in the library. The investigation employs an ethnographic approach to gather data, a method little used in the field. Findings are explored under the following themes: collaborative study, individual study, social space, intrusions and interruptions, use of technology, diversity, library staff/library materials and spatial organization.
