One consequence is that sample management and documenting experiments are viewed as separate and distinct activities, notwithstanding that samples and aliquots are an integral part of a majority of the experiments carried out by these labs.Various drivers are pushing labs towards integrated management of sample data and experimental data. These include the ever increasing amounts of both kinds of data, the increasing adoption of online collaborative tools, changing expectations about online communication, and the increasing affordability of electronic lab notebooks and sample management software. There is now an opportunity for smaller labs, which have been slow to move from paper to electronic record keeping, to leapfrog better resourced commercial labs and lead the way in adopting the new generation of tools which permit integrated management of samples and experimental data and a range of tangible benefits to conducting research, including:1. Fewer lost and mislabelled samples2. Clearer visualization of relationships between samples and experiments3. Reduction of experimental error4. More effective search5. Productivity gains6. More efficient use of freezers, leading to cost reduction and enhanced sustainability7.             "abstractNote": "Research Data Management (RDM) provides a framework that supports researchers and their data throughout the course of their research and is increasingly regarded as one of the essential areas of responsible conduct of research. New tools and infrastructures make possible the generation of large volumes of digital research data in a myriad of formats. This facilitates new ways to analyse, share and reuse these outputs, with libraries, IT services and other service units within academic institutions working together with the research community to develop RDM infrastructures to curate and preserve this type of research output and make them re-usable for future generations. Working on the principle that a rationalised and continuous flow of data between systems and across institutional boundaries is one of the core goals of information management, this paper will highlight service integration via Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN), which streamline research data workflows, result in efficiency gains for researchers, research administrators and other stakeholders, and ultimately enhance the RDM process.",

            "abstractNote": "Software process-planning, evaluation and modification of development activities based on metrics and measurement must be integrated into the computer science curriculum if it is to stay apace with the needs of modern software organizations. We developed software process activities and implemented them in a laboratory in conjunction with the third course of the computer science major. Students used practices such as postmortem analysis and measurement-based planning to gain control over their program development activities. Students kept electronic design notebooks that included pre/post surveys and postmortems on activities. Students used the data from their programming projects, collected during reviews and postmortems, in planning the next project. We used cognitive apprenticeship techniques so that students could not only understand the concepts but be able to apply them. At the end of the course surveys of the students indicated that they had (a) understood the software process concepts, (b) changed their own practices, (c) appreciated the value of such practices and (d) increased their commitment to a software engineering career. The laboratory developed in this project is not tied to a particular content but is generally applicable to any course with programming projects.",

Confluence can serve as an electronic lab notebook (ELN), as well as an information management and collaboration tool.             "abstractNote": "The School of Chemistry at UNSW is undertaking a trial of an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) with selected honours and postgraduate research students. This ELN was developed at the University of Southampton and has been designed to accommodate the diversity of research in science. The concept of an ELN is that all the data from instruments, the observations of a researcher, their notes, thoughts, etc, will be captured within the ELN. The UNSW/Southampton ELN is a blog of each researcher's experiments, which resides on a secure server and is accessed through the web. It is intended that data will be readily retrievable for creating presentations, writing papers and ultimately the student's thesis. The project has obtained a number of input devices (e.g. netbook, tablet and notebook PCs, PDA) and will trial their use with the web site.             "abstractNote": "Structural genomics aims at the establishment of a universal protein- fold dictionary through systematic structure determination either by NMR or X- ray crystallography. In order to catch up with the explosive amount of protein sequence data, the structural biology laboratories are spurred to increase the speed of the structure- determination process. To achieve this goal, high-throughput robotic approaches are increasingly used in all the steps leading from cloning to data collection and even structure interpretation is becoming more and more automatic. The progress made in these areas has begun to have a significant impact on the more ' classical' structural biology laboratories, dramatically increasing the number of individual experiments. This automation creates the need for efficient data management. Here, a new piece of software, HalX, designed as an ' electronic lab book' that aims at ( i) storage and ( ii) easy access and use of all experimental data is presented. This should lead to much improved management and tracking of structural genomics experimental data.",

            "abstractNote": "Complete process documentation can be generated and controlled with BPMN 2.0-based workflow automation using a LIMS/ELN (electronic laboratory notebook). The preferred approach of a combination generic LIMS in the form of an enterprise application integration (EAI) solution and BPMN 2.0 as an intersystem and interdisciplinary automation language offers the possibility to use the systems integration that already exists in the LIMS. The process engine is an integral part of the BPMS. The BPMS handles the function of an execution-oriented integration platform. The integration environment includes manual tasks that are specified and controlled with messages or other IT support options. Regarding the integration of the structured laboratory automation system, the end-to-end workflow automation connects distributed subprocesses of the control level, the device level, the instrument level, and, if necessary, the intelligent field level. A BPMN process model integrates all distributed workflows as a black box.",

            "abstractNote": "Data is particularly valuable to scientists when details of its provenance are known. This research concerned deploying a user-orientated electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) system within a scientific community. The ELN system supported the capture and retrieval of semantic metadata describing the provenance of the modelling activities of scientists within that community. The research was grounded within the atmospheric chemistry community but has applicability to other communities using an iterative model development process. The ELN system involved the automatic capture of metadata concerning the modelling process together with inline annotations added by the modeller explaining the reasoning for modelling decisions at each step of the process. A full realisation of the ELN system was built and evaluated by members of the atmospheric chemistry community. In order to promote reusability the ELN system architecture had domain-independent as well as domain-dependent elements. An ontology (in OWL) was used to ensure that the specific terminology of the community was used within the provenance metadata and also that it was used consistently. Other domain-independent elements of the architecture included a dynamic graphic interface that allowed the modeller to view his/her modelling history. This was recorded as a set of nodes each pointing to the stored provenance metadata associated with a specific simulation run. In addition, there was an innovative mechanism that enabled the modeller to navigate through the various nodes. The navigation process supported making comparisons between different nodes: a facility that users found particularly valuable. Members of the atmospheric chemistry community took part in a two-day summative evaluation of the ELN system. This confirmed its value to the modellers and it is now being introduced more widely across the modelling community.             "abstractNote": "The main raw product of biomedical research is the information contained in laboratory notebooks and the associated computer files of individual researchers. Most of the problems in managing bioresearch information downstream stem from the way this information is initially recorded and stored. Electronic notebooks based on traditional knowledge management approaches have not been widely adopted by bio-researchers - the vast majority still use paper notebooks. We describe deployment of a software system based on the semantic tagging approach that successfully addresses the key adoption problems. This case study also indicates fruitful directions for the future RandD.",

            "abstractNote": "The Virtual Notebook Environment (ViNE) is a platform-independent, web-based interface designed to support a range of scientific activities across distributed, heterogeneous computing platforms. ViNE provides scientists with a web-based version of the common paper-based lab notebook, but in addition, it provides support for collaboration and management of computational experiments. Collaboration is supported with the web-based approach, which makes notebook material generally accessible and with a hierarchy of security mechanisms that screen that access. ViNE provides uniform, system-transparent access to data, tools, and programs throughout the scientist's computing infrastructure. Computational experiments can be launched from ViNE using a visual specification language. The scientist is freed from concerns about inter-tool connectivity, data distribution, or data management details. ViNE also provides support for dynamically linking analysis results back into the notebook content. In this paper we present the ViNE system architecture and a case study of its use in neuropsychology research at the University of Oregon. Our case study with the Brain Electrophysiology Laboratory (BEL) addresses their need for data security and management, collaborative support, and distributed analysis processes. The current version of ViNE is a prototype system being tested with this and other scientific applications.",

Associations between these knowledge constructs are created within a dynamic node-and-edge user interface. To produce an interactive, adaptable knowledge base. We demonstrate the ELN's utility by using it to organize data and literature related to our studies of the neuroendocrine hypothalamic paraventri ular nucleus (PVH). We also discuss how the ELN could be applied to model other neuroendocrine systems; as an example we look at the role of PVH stressor-responsive neurons in the context of their involvement in the suppression of reproductive function. Regulatory agencies have provided a variety of guidance documents to define requirements for assuring accuracy, reliability and acceptability of these ELNs. The developer of an ELN system should be aware of and compliant with 21 CFR Part 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation of electronic signatures and systems, Good Manufacturing Practices specifically requirements for validation, and potentially the guidelines of industry supplemental organizations. Vendors seeking maximum market credibility should consider having their ELNs independently certified for compliance with US, European and Japanese requirements. Potential purchasers of new ELNs should consider including such certifications in the Requests for Proposals, and current users of systems should apply these requirements in evaluation of their systems.",
