Proinflammatory mediators that contribute to eradication of invading microorganisms are produced, and anti-inflammatory mediators control this response. The inflammatory response leads to damage to host tissue, and the anti-inflammatory response causes leucocyte reprogramming and changes in immune status. The time-window for interventions is short, and treatment must promptly control the source of infection and restore haemodynamic homoeostasis. Further research is needed to establish which fluids and vasopressors are best. Some patients with septic shock might benefit from drugs such as corticosteroids or activated protein C. Para tal fin, se analizan las tendencias estructurales que explican la evolución del patrón de crecimiento industrial del país en el largo plazo y se examinan los determinantes del crecimiento desde el enfoque de las fuentes de demanda, según el esquema contable desarrollado por Chenery y Syrquin (1975); el estudio se enfatiza en la década de los noventa, para determinar los efectos del proceso de ajuste estructural y el modelo de liberalización comercial, en la dinámica, transformaciones y perspectivas de crecimiento de la industria frente a las exigencias de competitividad que plantea el escenario de creciente internacionalización de la economía. En particular, se trata de analizar el tipo de estructura industrial que se ha logrado consolidar en el país y sus perspectivas de internacionalización y crecimiento, luego de la reforma comercial y sus relaciones con la eficiencia, la competitividad y el cambio técnico. El estudio permite determinar que la fuente del crecimiento industrial en Colombia en las últimas cuatro décadas, ha estado sustentado fundamentalmente por el comportamiento de la demanda interna; esto refleja la vulnerabilidad del patrón de crecimiento industrial a las fluctuaciones y condiciones cíclicas de la demanda domestica, mientras que la expansión y contribución de las exportaciones, al crecimiento del producto industrial ha sido marginal. Currently world production is over 3 million tonnes annually, with India producing more than a million tonnes and Brazil just under this figure each year. Other tropical producers include Yemen 163,000, Peru 136,000, Thailand 40,000, Colombia 19,000, Tanzania 14,000 and Venezuela 11,500 tonnes. Grapes are also produced in the tropical part of Mexico and Saudi Arabia, while many other tropical countries produce small amounts for local consumption. Many different climates exist within the tropics resulting from variations in temperature, humidity, elevation and in the amount and distribution of the rainfall. Those best suited to growing ever-green vines and producing grapes have average minimum temperatures above 15°C and a reliable dry period of at least 3 months during which bunch formation and ripening occurs. In both the dry and wet tropics, the growth and cropping cycle of the vine can be manipulated to extend from 5 to 12 months by a combination of pruning, modifying vine water status and the judicious use of chemical regulators. In the tropics overhead trellises, which separate bunches from the vine canopy and reduce bunch rotting, are the most common form of vine training. Some elevated areas within the tropics have cold periods that induce leaf fall and in these areas the growth cycle of the vine is climate controlled and not able to be manipulated. Initially grape vines were cultivated in the tropics for the production of table grapes and this is still their main end use. With their capacity to produce more than one crop per year grapevines can provide massive yields of nutritious fresh fruit at times of the year when supplies of tropical fruits are limited. New developments in this area include the growing of an increased range of seedless varieties and the selection and breeding of new clones and varieties better suited to the tropics. A further innovation has been the use of plastic shelters and plastic-houses with open sides to, shield the vines from rain, reduce the incidence of bunch rots and slightly modify ripening times. The adoption of post harvest techniques originally developed for grapes from temperate areas has been of major importance for tropical grapes. These involve fumigating the grapes with gaseous and slow release sulphur dioxide papers combined with storage at temperatures just above zero. These treatments greatly extend the shelf life of tropical grapes and allow them to be transported to distant markets. A relatively new development has been the use of tropical grapes for the production of both wine and dried raisins. Good wine is now produced in the slightly elevated, wet tropical areas of northern and eastern Thailand, from both the Shiraz and Chenin Blanc varieties. Grapes from the larger crop that ripens in the cooler low rainfall months are of better quality and have less disease than those from the monsoon crop. In a region with a somewhat similar climate, the Deccan Plateau of South India, a range of winemaking varieties are now being grown and cropped once per year, with the grapes being used exclusively for wine production. Good wine is also made from grapes, from vines grown with irrigation and cropped twice per year, in dry tropical areas of both Venezuela (Carora) and Brazil (San Francisco Valley). As with virtually all wine grapes grown in hot areas it is essential to supplement the ferments with tartaric acid to provide an appropriate acid balance to the wine. Raisin production in tropical areas of high humidity represents perhaps the ultimate challenge for tropical grapes; however, this problem has largely been solved in South India using techniques developed in Australia for producing raisins rather than drying them on paper on the ground. In this scheme of things, the Thomson Seedless (Sultana) grapes are dried on wire netting racks with roofs that protect them from the rain, after treating them with emulsions of fatty acids (mainly ethyl oleate) and potassium carbonate that hasten drying and lead to the production of light-brown coloured raisins. It is clear that tropical grape production is now a major world industry and the grapes are able to be utilized for fresh eating, wine and raisin production.

Consumers often rely upon the place of origin of a wine product in order to assess its quality. This research examines the importance of place-of-origin information and what level of place is meaningful to consumers, as well as which consumers utilize that information.\n\nDesign/methodology/approach – Data collection took place by means of a highly structured online survey of 409 geographically dispersed wine consumers across the USA. Respondents were recruited by Survey Sampling International and screened for at least occasional wine consumption.\n\nFindings – Brand and place-of-origin information such as region, country and state were the most important attributes in the consumers' choice of a wine. One type of geographical indicator, appellation, was not well utilized. Core wine consumers and those with greater expertise utilized place-of-origin cues to a greater extent than less frequent and less knowledgeable consumers.\n\nResearch limitations/implications – The study sample represents US wine drinkers and should not be taken as a general population sample. Potential respondents were required to have consumed at least one bottle in the last year in order to take the survey. The non-probability sample includes participants from 46 states, 189 of whom are male and 211 are female.\n\nPractical implications – Wineries in established regions should increase their efforts to promote regional identity at the county, state and national level, to enhance their existing product images. Regional information is more heavily utilized by consumers than appellation information, which allows producers to take advantage of pre-existing levels of awareness. This research suggests that marketers develop strategies to increase sales that emphasize larger regions such as county or state rather than appellations.\n\nOriginality/value – This paper is of value to academic readers, wine industry practitioners and regional trade and tourism associations and other commercial entities that market their products with regional cues. The aim of this paper is to understand whether weather derivatives (WDs), mainly developed for the energy industry, can also be useful to cover climate risk for the wine industry.\n\nDesign/methodology/approach – The work is based on both literature review and the development of a suitable hedging strategy, using WDs, to reduce volatility affecting crop economic results.\n\nFindings – A WD discovered to be useful for this task is similar to a cooling degree day (CDD) contract in the energy industry, and a possible hedging strategy is a strangle consisting of combination of a call and a put on a suitable climate index. In the case history presented, relating to the Bourgogne Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir red grape, the strangle covers the climate risk effectively, because it is able to reduce volatility related to the crop economic value.\n\nResearch limitations/implications – Even if single fields are not still enough to evaluate whether a WD's hedging strategy is effective or not, implications affect both supply and demand for hedging instruments. On the demand side, the wine industry could rely on hedging strategies different from insurance policies. In particular, WDs offer to wine makers more flexibility and transparency in selling climate risks to counterparts. Thus, considerable research has been directed toward understanding the nature of flavonoids in grapevines, the factors that influence their biosynthesis, and how this knowledge might be used to manage and manipulate the flavonoid composition of berries at harvest. This review examines the flavonoids as a class of compounds, the role these compounds play in the plant, their contributions to wine quality, and recent research on the impacts of environmental factors and cultural practices on the flavonoid content and composition of grape berries. It is conferred by anthocyanins, which are highly influenced by environmental conditions. In this study we evaluated the effect of bunch shading on quality parameters and anthocyanins content in order to select the variables defining color development. Bunches of the cv. 'Flame Seedless' cultivated during the 2003-2004 growing season were used. They were covered in pre-veraisson with a white plastic net or a black net (assumedly both retained 50% of luminosity) and a control treatment without shading. Significant shading effects were found on color parameters (hue, CIRG), but not on internal quality characteristics. Bunches covered with black net showed CIRG = 3.18 and accumulated 688 μg g-1 of anthocyanins at harvest, which exceeded those of the control (CIRG = 3.10, 678 μg g-1) and those bunches covered with white net (CIRG = 2.61, 653 μg g-1). The correlations between color vs. total soluble solids, pH and titrable acidity were 0.69, 0.53 y -0.71, respectively. A logarithmic function (R2= 0.70) modeled the relationship between light intensity and bunch temperature. Minimum temperatures registered during the night defined color, described by a quadratic function (R2=0.86).

The varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carménère analyzed here are produced in four different valleys in the central part of Chile (Colchagua, Maipo, Maule, and Rapel). Aroma information was obtained with a zNoseTM (fast gas chromatograph) and the data was analyzed by applying wavelet transform for feature extraction followed by an analysis with support vector machines for classification. Two evaluations of the classification technique were performed; the average percentage of correct classification performed on the validation set was obtained by means of cross-validation against the percentage of correct classification obtained on the test set. This developed technique obtained results on classification rates over 94% in both cases.
