People who provided information were given written guarantees that their own accounts, and indeed the Project itself, would be kept secret until after their deaths. However, the existence of the Project was made public by its own director while some participants were still alive. The chapter begins with a brief background to the Troubles and an explanation of the importance of archives. Then the history of the archive is outlined and analysed, and the lessons learned from the case are discussed. One key lesson is that unless or until there is legal recognition of researcher-participant privilege, it will not always be possible for research data to be kept secure both ethically and legally. In conclusion, we outline the potential role for archival evidence in policymaking, and provide evidence for the importance of trust in social co-operation. They remain however tricky to apply in the specific context of heritage science where workflows include a long tail of subjective human decisions, of non-explicit research protocols, of poorly formalised pieces of knowledge, of highly individual skills, of undocumented, non-reproducible, intuitive interpretations, when not simply of licentia artistica. Yet the heritage science community has witnessed over the past decades the emergence of huge quantities of digital outputs, either following massive digitization efforts, or as a result of the growing capacity of actors to produce digital-born material. How can this move be supported in terms of reproducibility, reusability and cross-examination of results if research protocols remain non-formalised one-shot efforts? The research presented in this paper bases on the idea that what should be formalised and shared with future generations are not end results alone (outputs) but the methods and processes that lead the making of the output (human skills, tools, technological procedures, cognitive processes, scientific protocols, etc.). Our contribution addresses a pending issue: how can we today complement traditional approaches to heritage assets documentation with means to describe and record research processes and workflows? The infrastructure we propose raises knowledge representation, visualisation, and information management issues. Cet article vise à restituer les résultats d’une étude menée par le portail Cairn.info et par IDATE Consulting, tentant d’apprécier quelles pourraient être les conséquences sur l’économie de ces publications et de leurs éditeurs des mesures envisagées actuellement (décembre 2015) par les pouvoirs publics français : la possibilité pour l’auteur d’un article de sciences humaines et sociales émanant d’une recherche financée par des fonds publics de diffuser gratuitement son texte douze mois après sa publication, quels que soient les termes de l’accord qu’il aurait passé avec l’éditeur de la revue dans laquelle il a publié ou avec les responsables de celle-ci. Après un point sur la situation actuelle des revues SHS de langue française, l’étude tente d’évaluer l’impact des mesures envisagées en distinguant deux scénarios : le respect de la liberté du chercheur ou la mise en place, par les établissements, de politiques de dépôt obligatoires. Elle vise ensuite à chiffrer les coûts de la mise en place éventuelle d’une formule de type « Platinum » qui verrait les pouvoirs publics ou les établissements supporter « en amont », de façon globale, les coûts d’édition des articles, avant de lister les nombreuses questions auxquelles un renversement de modèle de ce type donnerait lieu : en termes de périmètre du dispositif, de mode de redistribution des financements, de pérennité et d’indépendance des revues., To implement the European Commission’s recommendation on open access to scientific publications in France presents many challenges, especially for the small, always at risk, niche publishers of French-language journals in humanities and social sciences (SSH). This article presents the results of a study conducted by the portal Cairn.info and IDATE Consulting, that attempts to assess the possible consequences of measures considered (in December 2015) by the French government for these journals and their publishers – specifically, the author’s prerogative to distribute freely and widely any article resulting from publicly funded research, twelve months after its publication, whatever the contract he may have signed with the publishing firm or the journal would stipulate. The study begins with an update on the current situation of French-language SSH journals and goes on to consider the impact of this measure by distinguishing between two scenarios: when the freedom of distribution is given individually to each researcher, and when an open access mandate is set up at the level of the institutions. Finally, the paper elaborates an evaluation of the possible costs of a third option: a “Platinum” model where governmental organizations and/or public institutions provide upstream funding for an author’s publications prior to the edition process. Reformulations of the movement were many, by different actors not defending the same issues for this transformation. In support of participant observation, the article retraces the evolution of different operating models of open access in both a diachronic dimension and a compared dimension for national policies in different countries. À particular step seems to begin, marked by comprehensive negotiations between publishers, governments and research funders. Methods: Analysis of ethicolegal requirements imposed by the GDPR. Results: The GDPR makes the classification of pseudonymised data as personal data clearer, although it has not been entirely resolved. Biomedical research on personal data where consent has not been obtained must be of substantial public interest. Conclusions: The GDPR introduces protections for data subjects that aim for consistency across the EU. The proposed changes will make little impact on biomedical data research.
