"abstractNote": "This essay examines late seventeenth-century European missionary and Jesuit accounts of China for the ways in which they draw attention to China's social and cultural superiority in the early modern world. By idealizing Chinese modes of maintaining social order, the authors of these accounts align generosity, civility, self-possession, and a benevolent monarchy with national wealth and moral authority. Elevating China as the exemplar of uncorrupted Christian virtue, these texts insist upon China as the standard against which all other claims to morality must be measured. Although these texts were intended to justify European efforts to educate and enlighten a \"heathen\" race, they instead implicitly and explicitly mark the limits of European morality.",

"abstractNote": "As emblems of otherness in a space devoted to commercial and human exchanges and dedicated to mercantilism, Vietnamese women who cross the border and now live in areas bordering China have quickly come to represent their country—in the eyes of Chinese people—as a figure of marginal femininity. Observed, dated, used but rarely understood in a linguistic and cultural sense, it is their strong, sensual, and docile bodies that are primarily considered. Contradictory and accommodating images emerge and then expand in the discourses, portraying these women as submissive spouses, tireless workers, prostitutes, manipulators, heartless pragmatists, devoted companions, and ambiguous merchants. This articles explores how, between perception and experience, these women's availability, in every sense of the term, makes them both attractive and suspicious, and how their alliances with Chinese men crystallizes the social atmosphere of a border city like Hekou.",

On this tour, visitors don't just taste different foods. They also discuss how both immigrants and U.S.–born citizens use food to shape their identities and define their communities. By tour's end, visitors come to understand how immigrants and U.S.–born citizens together create American culture in neighborhoods like the Lower East Side. A new indoor version of the tour adds additional content about local storeowners as well as more opportunities for visitors to talk and share stories.",
