He never stayed with a band for long, and eventually went solo partly to make more money and partly due to his inability to work with bandleaders. Often drinking to excess, alcohol fueled his sometimes-erratic behavior on and off the bandstand. He went through at least thirteen different groups in fifteen years of professional play before leaving for Europe in 1946. Despite his fractious personality, in Europe he found peace and contentment as a family man in the Netherlands, where he lived out his days with his second wife and their four children. He learned at least seven languages during his years in Europe, and on traveling to a new country could pick up a few phrases in short order, soon speaking to the locals and even composing songs in their native tongue. In Sax Expat: Don Byas, author Con Chapman argues that Byas's relative obscurity arises from his choice to live in Europe, where he missed out on recording opportunities and exposure in the US that would have made him renowned and wealthier. His numerous achievements, including his solo on Count Basie's \"Harvard Blues,\" which is a model of restrained invention; his interpretation of the sentimental movie theme \"Laura\"; and his duets with bassist Slam Stewart were included in the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz and secured Byas's place in jazz history. In 1940, after eleven years as one of the major soloists with the Duke Ellington orchestra, Williams was lured away to the band of Benny Goodman, one of the most popular bands in the country. At the time, it was a controversial move-it was still taboo for African Americans to share the bandstand with white people. Current references to the move usually reduce it to a song writtten by Raymond Scott, \"When Cootie Left the Duke.\" In reality, it was a seismic event. The Black press predicted Black bands would collapse from raids on their ranks. White musicians were afraid they would be put out of work. And the white press stirred up visions of Black musicians mixing with white women in the new landscape of integrated orchestras. The twenty years trumpeter Williams spent as a band leader (1942-1962) have been covered in only the barest of details. His involvement in politics and the civil rights movement have not been detailed before. An astute talent scout, Williams and his band launched the careers of Eddie \"Cleanhead\" Vinson, Earl \"Bud\" Powell, Eddie \"Lockjaw\" Davis, and Pearl Bailey. He also was the first to record the music of a young Thelonious Monk, using two of Monk's compositions (\"Epistrophy\" and \"'Round Midnight\") as theme songs for his band. Steven C. At age nineteen, he cofounded the nightclub Birdland in Hell's Kitchen, which became the home for a new musical style, bebop. Levy operated one of the first integrated clubs on Broadway and helped build the careers of Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell and most notably aided the reemergence of Count Basie. In 1957, he founded a record label, Roulette Records. Roulette featured many of the significant jazz artists who played Birdland but also scored top pop hits with acts like Buddy Knox, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Joey Dee and the Starliters, and, in the mid-1960s, Tommy James. Stories abound of Levy threatening artists, songwriters, and producers, sometimes just for the sport, other times so he could continue to build his empire. Along the way, Levy attracted \"investors\" with ties to the Mafia, including Dominic Ciaffone (a.k.a. \"Swats\" Mulligan), Tommy Eboli, and the most notorious of them all, Vincent Gigante. Gigante allegedly owned large pieces of Levy's recording and retail businesses. Starting in the late 1950s, the FBI and IRS investigated Levy but could not make anything stick until the early 1980s, when Levy foolishly got involved in a deal to sell remaindered records to a small-time reseller, John LaMonte. With partners in the mob, Levy tried to force LaMonte to pay for four million remaindered records. When the FBI secretly wiretapped LaMonte in an unrelated investigation and agents learned about the deal, investigators successfully prosecuted Levy in the extortion scheme. He turned to practicing for long hours, often late at night, on the Williamsburg Bridge, and it was then for the first time that he began to turn regularly to his notebooks, which at the time and in the years to come proved for him an indispensable instrument of change in their own right. Here Rollins can tend towards the aphoristic, as in \"Face the startling and intriguing reality that there is within me a force working hard for my own destruction, even as I try to improve.\" Elsewhere, music is front and center, as he mingles observations on embouchure, fingering, and technique with reflections on harmony and dissonance. Lists of daily chores, rehearsal routines, reflections on particular tours and recordings (including detailed notes on how Rollins wanted live albums to be edited), and a steady stream of notes on diet and health also find their way into the notebooks, as do ruminations on systemic racism and the way nightclub culture degrades jazz musicians.
