Seven blind subjects spontaneously reported ‘visual qualia’, the subjective sensation of seeing flashes of light congruent with tactile stimuli. In the latter subjects tactile stimulation evoked activation of occipital cortex on electroencephalography (EEG). None of the blind subjects who failed to experience visual qualia, despite identical tactile stimulation training, showed EEG recruitment of occipital cortex. None of the blindfolded seeing humans reported visual-like sensations during tactile stimulation. These findings support the notion that the conscious experience of seeing is linked to the activation of occipital brain regions in people with blindness. Il serait difficile d'imputer cet état de fait à des limitations technologiques. Depuis les premières approches, les prothèses visuelles n'ont cessé de se perfectionner et de se diversifier. Toutefois, si la question de savoir comment transmettre le signal est bien documentée, la question de savoir quel signal transmettre a été plus rarement abordée. Dans cette thèse, nous identifions des outils susceptibles de pousser la conception des dispositifs de suppléance visuelle au-delà de la seule question de l'interface. Nous puisons pour cela dans les développements récents sur les théories actives de la vision et dans les implications de ces théories sur la conception et l'évaluation de dispositifs de perception. Nous nous inspirons par ailleurs du fonctionnement des systèmes perceptifs naturels, et plus particulièrement du traitement de l'information dans le système rétino-cortical humain, dont nous proposons un modèle. Ce modèle, issu de plusieurs travaux de thèse au laboratoire, a fait l'objet d'une simulation logicielle, implémentée dans le dispositif de substitution sensorielle visuo-auditif 'TheVIBE'. L'impact de ce traitement biomimétique du signal est testé expérimentalement sur des sujets humains équipés du dispositif dans différentes tâches notamment dans une tâche de mobilité en extérieur. Consistent with this view, recent evidence suggests that a region of the lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LO) may process object shape information regardless of the modality of sensory input. There is considerable evidence that area LO is involved in processing visual and haptic shape information. However, sound can also carry acoustic cues to an object's shape, for example, when a sound is produced by an object's impact with a surface. Thus, the current study used auditory stimuli that were created from recordings of objects impacting a hard surface to test the hypothesis that area LO is also involved in auditory shape processing. The objects were of two shapes, rods and balls, and of two materials, metal and wood. Subjects were required to categorize the impact sounds in one of three tasks, 1) by the shape of the object while ignoring material, 2) by the material of the object while ignoring shape, or 3) by using all the information available. Area LO was more strongly recruited when subjects discriminated impact sounds based on the shape of the object that made them, compared to when subjects discriminated those same sounds based on material. Les nouvelles technologies, comme celles dites de substitution sensorielle, sont prometteuses pour porter assistance aux personnes aveugles dans cette activité quotidienne. Cependant, il existe peu de protocoles rapides et rationalisés pour évaluer leur réelle efficacité en situation écologique. Cette recherche a pour objectif de proposer une telle méthode d'évaluation. Nous chercherons tout d'abord à définir un cadre de travail conceptuel pour construire notre protocole, nous l'appliquerons ensuite sur le dispositif de substitution visuo-auditif TheVibe. Le protocole est fondé sur l'apprentissage et la perturbation de l'activité sensori-motrice permise par le dispositif afin de démontrer son utilisabilité. Cette expérience implique 20 participants aux yeux bandés qui devront apprendre un parcours avec le dispositif TheVibe. Après apprentissage, ils doivent restituer le parcours en condition normale ou perturbée. Leurs performances sont évaluées en termes d'erreurs de mobilité et de temps de parcours. Les résultats montrent que le dispositif joue sur les performances des participants seulement sur le nombre d'erreurs de mobilité. Ces résultats et les entretiens individuels nous mettent sur la voie d'une amélioration de la méthode d'apprentissage et du traitement du signal réalisé par le dispositif.", "tags": [], "collections":
