It is challenging to collect such data over large areas through field observations. The use of satellite remote sensing data has made phenology data collection easier, although the quality and the utility of such data to understand agro-ecosystem function have not been widely studied. Here, we evaluated satellite data-based estimates of rice phenological stages in California, USA by comparing them with survey data and with predictions by a temperature-driven phenology model. We then used the satellite data-based estimates to quantify the crop phenological response to changes in weather. We used time-series of MODIS satellite data and PhenoRice, a rule-based rice phenology detection algorithm, to determine annual planting, heading and harvest dates of paddy rice in California between 2002 and 2017. At the state level, our satellite-based estimates of rice phenology were very similar to the official survey data, particularly for planting and harvest dates (RMSE = 3.8–4.0 days). Satellite based observations were also similar to predictions by the DD10 temperature-driven phenology model. We analyzed how the timing of these phenological stages varied with concurrent temperature and precipitation over this 16-year time period. We found that planting was earlier in warm springs (−1.4 days °C−1 for mean temperature between mid-April and mid-May) and later in wet years (5.3 days 100 mm-1 for total precipitation from March to April). Higher mean temperature during the pre-heading period of the growing season advanced heading by 2.9 days °C−1 and shortened duration from planting to heading by 1.9 days °C−1. The entire growing season was reduced by 3.2 days °C−1 because of the increased temperature during the rice season. Our findings confirm that satellite data can be an effective way to estimate variations in rice phenology and can provide critical information that can be used to improve understanding of agricultural ], "abstractNote": "Climate change can affect crop yield in a given location, and it can also affect where crops are grown. Most assessments of the effect of historical climate change on crop yield has been at the national level, ignoring possibly important subnational variation and climate change adaptation through changes in crop distribution. We analyzed the relationship between growing season temperature, rice yield, and the spatial distribution of rice production in China between 1949 and 2015. Since 1949, rice production in China has moved northwards. Because of this, country level average temperature for rice areas during the growing season was relatively stable, and colder than it would have been without the movement. Temperature has had a very small effect on rice yield at the country level of −0.05 t ha−1 °C−1. However, this masks important subnational variation. Increased temperatures were associated with an increase in rice yield (0–1.0 t ha−1 °C−1) in northern provinces and a decrease (−0.6–0 t ha−1 °C−1) in southern provinces of China. To date, no studies have simultaneously estimated the food security and environmental implications of previously adopted rice intensification regimes. Thus, our study analyzes the food security and environmental impacts associated with two major rice intensification practices in Bangladesh: (1) planting rice in multiple seasons and (2) replacing traditional (TYV) rice with High Yielding Varieties (HYV). Bangladeshi rice production data by growing season and variety were gathered for 2012–2015 from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and farm management information were collected from the Bangladeshi Livelihood Systems survey. A partial equilibrium trade model of the global rice economy was implemented to estimate trade impacts, price effects, and producer and consumer welfare changes from rice instensification. Additionally, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was used to estimate the environmental impacts of both intensified and traditional rice systems. The results indicate a 12.60% increase in Bangladeshi consumption associated with historical HYV rice adoption, which equates to enough additional rice for nearly 26 million people annually. Moreover, the LCA results suggest that HYV was more input and water use efficient per kg of rice produced even with increased inputs per ha in at least one season, and in no case was TYV more efficient. Global Warming Potential associated with rice systems was substantially less across all seasons in HYV compared to TYV per kg of rice produced. We characterize global trends in dietary quality by estimating micronutrient density of the food supply, prevalence of inadequate intake of 14 micronutrients, and average prevalence of inadequate intake of these micronutrients for all countries between 1961 and 2011. Over this 50-year period, the estimated prevalence of inadequate intakes of micronutrients has declined in all regions due to increased total production of food and/or micronutrient density. This decline has been particularly strong in East and Southeast Asia and weaker in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region where dietary micronutrient density has declined over this 50-year period. At the global level, micronutrients with the lowest levels of adequate estimated intake are calcium, iron, vitamin A, and zinc, but there are strong differences between countries and regions. Fortification has reduced the estimated prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intakes in all low-income regions, except South Asia. The food supply in many countries is still far below energy requirements, which suggests a need to increase the availability and accessibility of nutritious foods. Countries where the food energy supply is adequate show a very large variation in dietary quality, and in many of these countries people would benefit from more diverse diets with a greater proportion of micronutrient-dense foods. Dietary quality can be improved through fortification, biofortification, and agricultural diversification, as well as efforts to improve access to and use of micronutrient-dense foods and nutritional knowledge. These deficiencies are cause for serious concern because of their high prevalence and their associated complications, which include depressed immune function and increased risk and severity of infections, impaired neurocognitive development, and anemia, which together result in elevated mortality and reduced human productive capacity. A broad range of different intervention strategies are available to control MN deficiencies. At present, these interventions are usually implemented at a national scale through different public and private sector entities, often with little coordination. We have developed a set of models based on the estimated ability of different interventions to achieve effective coverage and the necessary financial resources required to deploy these interventions. The models provide a unified and transparent framework for considering different options using the common indicator of effective coverage. More specifically, information on nutritional benefits and costs are analyzed using an economic optimization model to identify the mix of interventions that could be delivered to specific target groups in particular geographic areas to achieve a desired level of effective coverage at lowest cost. Alternatively, these optimization models can be developed to identify the combination of interventions needed to achieve the maximum effective coverage, given specified budgetary limitations. The results of these models can be useful input into policy-making processes.
