"abstractNote": "Crowdfunding is changing how, why, and which research projects are pursued. With the increasing number of crowdfunded research projects, it is important to understand what drives scientists to launch crowdfunding campaigns and how it affects their work. To better understand this re-cent phenomenon, we present a grounded theory of how and why scientists crowdfund. Through 27 semi-structured interviews, we find that scientists are motivated to crowd-fund in order to share their work and engage the public in the research process in ways traditional science work has not offered. Scientists also perceive crowdfunding as a more accessible way to get funds quickly compared to existing fundraising mechanisms, such as grant applications. However, they must learn to use more accessible language to successfully communicate their research through social media to a broad audience of non-scientists and professional peers. Based on these findings, we discuss design implications to inform future crowdfunding platforms and sup-port tools.",

"abstractNote": "Australia has reflected an international shift toward public participation in governance and science. Researchers have critiqued\nthis shift as insufficient. Meanwhile, studies of how research funds are allocated also found room for improvement. This\nexperiment tested a way to add value to the effort researchers put into research proposals by using them for deliberative\npublic engagement. Three Australian events tested a model of deliberative participation in decision-making about science\nfunding. These events were shorter than most deliberative processes, based on a model tested in the United Kingdom.\nAlthough recruitment was aimed at broad representation, participants had more formal education than Australia’s average.\nVoting decisions were most influenced by potential benefits to society of the planned research, as well as participants’\nunderstanding of plans presented. Some reported that their decisions were influenced by whether benefits would happen\nlocally. Results suggested that participants’ voting decisions were more influenced by the research plans than who presented\nthem. However, unconscious biases cannot be ruled out as factors in decision-making. Participants reported they would be\nkeen to participate in such a process again; however, this enthusiasm was linked to a meal incentive. The impact of brevity\non deliberative decision-making is discussed, along with potential modifications for future experiments.",

\nThree events of three hours each, across two cities. Over those three hours, three different scientists presented their research proposals. Public voted to allocate $500,000 to the projects.
\nThe researchers presented on three different projects about genetic modification (GM). Each discussed at least one potential benefit.
\n85 formal participants (57 in Adelaide, 20 & 8 in Canberra).

\nTo my view, crowdfunding does this in a much more natural way. It has all the benefits, without the overheads of organisation and public presentation. That is, crowdfunding allows the public to vote on research proposals as this paper recommends.
