"abstractNote": "This book tells the story of the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, an emblematic grassroots social movement of peasant farmers, who unusually declared themselves ‘neutral’ to Colombia’s internal armed conflict, in the north-west region of Urabá. It reveals two core narratives in the Community’s collective identity, which Burnyeat calls the ‘radical’ and the ‘organic’ narratives. These refer to the historically-constituted interpretative frameworks according to which they perceive respectively the Colombian state, and their relationship with their natural and social environments. Together, these two narratives form an ‘Alternative Community’ collective identity, comprising a distinctive conception of grassroots peace-building. This study, centered on the Community’s socio-economic cacao-farming project, offers an innovative way of approaching victims’ organizations and social movements through critical, post-modern politics and anthropology. It will become essential reading to Latin American ethnographers and historians, and all interested in conflict resolution and transitional justice.",

By describing the historical development of the human shielding article in international humanitarian law and its changing political and ethical functions, we illustrate how a legal figure is created, how its meaning is transformed over the years, and how the changes it undergoes reflect shifting power relations and the fluctuating political demands of different actors. Our assumption is that a microanalysis of human shields also uncovers some of the more general power dynamics through which international law is produced and the particular ways it regulates and, at times, even facilitates violence.</p>",

"abstractNote": "My research-creation dissertation investigates the question 'how are human rights enacted/performed? by examining solidarity activism in Guatemala and the hemispheric networks that enable it. The essay film al lado, afuera. // beside, outside. (2018, 21:12 min.), a synthesis of interviews with contemporary activists looks at human rights accompanimentthe process of situating oneself as an unarmed volunteer, assuming a physical presence alongside social activists who are victims of political threats, in order to dissuade violence, bear witness, and activate international solidarity networks. The performatic repertoire of accompaniment activism is explored upon the backdrop of the LAWG (Latin American Working Group)s collection of solidarity documents (1965-1997) and a large wall drawing that maps my research on networks of solidarity activism, thereby contextualizing this little-known embodied activist practice and exploring entanglements between the material archive and the ephemeral repertoire. \n \nSolidarity movement ephemera and a series of posters, created from graphic and textual elements of selected LAWG documents, highlight the material and historical foundation of todays accompaniment activism in Guatemala. By continuing to scan these documents in the gallery space as a durational performance throughout the exhibition, I highlight the labour performed in solidarity activism, and the change-of-state from paper materials to digital files, thereby mirroring of the trajectory from pre-Internet campaigns of letter-writing, information bulletins, flyers and posters, etcetera to todays digital forms of solidarity mobilization, and the various temporalities of solidarity. \n \nIn transforming the collection from a material to a digital archive, I am creating an open source online repository of these crucial materials, as well as a gallery installation that highlights the aesthetics and materiality of pre-Internet solidarity activism, posing the question how does the materiality of solidarity evidenced in the LAWG collection work in tandem with embodied performances of solidarity activism?",

"abstractNote": "Studies of nonviolence have taught us much about what makes nonviolence successful, emphasizing the importance of local circumstance and strategy. Little attention has been given to the effect of ties with international organizations on nonviolence: that is, how the embeddedness of local actors in global networks shapes nonviolent mobilization. In this article, a world society framework is applied with the objective of understanding the transnational factors shaping local nonviolent mobilization. Through global and historical models exploring political, economic, and cultural factors, it is found that: first, the global integration and structure of the nation-state is an important and significant factor in shaping the emergence of nonviolent movements; second, integration into global civil society networks significantly increases the likelihood for large-scale nonviolent resistance; and third, ties to a specialized network of nonviolent organizations significantly shape the path toward nonviolence over violent means of resistance.",

"abstractNote": "This book is about the work of nonviolence as told through the lens of the Meta Peace Team. In Chapter 1, Reverend Peter Dough- erty tells stories of his life and how he came to be involved in civil disobedience and nonviolence, and how he and Jasiu Milanowski met and started the Meta Peace Team. Chapter 2 includes many lessons of nonviolence from Jasiu and Peter from their peace team work domestically and internationally. Chapter 3 introduces Mary Hanna, the MPT office manager, who tells stories of participat- ing on domestic peace teams, and shares research supporting the effectiveness of nonviolence. Chapter 4 illustrates the work of MPT in schools, and with the Poor People's Campaign as experienced by teacher and activist Kim Redigan. Chapter 5 applies the work of MPT on various peace teams, as Sheri Wander works with the marginalized communities in Michigan. Chapter 6 tells stories of International peace teams within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as experienced by Peter Dougherty and Elliott Adams, a former Army paratrooper. Chapter 7 reflects stories from Palestine as experienced by Hanna, Redigan, and Linda Sartor, and introduces the work of Jewish Voice for Peace. Chapter 8 recounts the stories, emotions, and reflections on what the Meta Peace Team witnessed at the U.S./Mexico border. Chapter 9 brings to life the stories of everyday people who are using the skills of Active Nonviolence in their daily lives. Then we reach the Conclusion, which in many ways is a beginning.Often, an Appendix is reserved for ancillary information, but in this book the Appendix has a detailed description of a Meta Peace Team training. It could be the place to start in order to under- stand the practice of Active Listening, Bystander Intervention and Third Party Nonviolent Intervention. Or it could be a place to visit between chapters to increase understanding of these tools for non- violence.",

The presence of international civilian peacekeepers may create the conditions for protecting civilians in situations of violent conflict. However, civilian peacekeeping is not adequate for any environment. The existing literature in this field is not analyzing the pre-existing conditions that might affect deployment. This article – defining some general external factors that may bring to the success or failure of a civilian peacekeeping mission – is a first attempt in this direction.",

"abstractNote": "Although opinion polls have consistently demonstrated Canadian support of their country's peacekeeping missions, recent surveys have demonstrated decreasing public support for Canada's involvement in military combat interventions in other parts of the world. However, awareness and understanding of nonviolent alternatives to military intervention and conventional peacekeeping appear to be lacking. This survey examines Canadian public's awareness and understanding of unarmed civilian peacekeeping as an alternative to sending armed troops, and whether the public would support Canada in utilizing unarmed civilian peacekeepers (focusing on reducing direct violence through protective accompaniment, building capacity of local civil society organizations, mediation and other nonviolent communication strategies) as part of its response to violent global conflicts. The results reveal that Canadians believe unarmed civilian peacekeeping would be more effective in tasks such as reducing human rights abuses, preventing further armed conflict and promoting lasting peace. Respondents also believe the practice would benefit Canada's reputation as a peacemaker and leader. This paper concludes with recommendations for proponents of the incorporation of unarmed civilian peacekeeping into the official policy of the Canadian government.",

"abstractNote": "The just peace movement offers a critical shift in focus and imagination. Recognizing that all life is sacred and seeking peace through violence is unsustainable, the just peace approach turns our attention to rehumanization, participatory processes, nonviolent resistance, restorative justice, reconciliation, racial justice, and creative strategies of active nonviolence to build sustainable peace, transform conflict, and end cycles of violence. A Just Peace Ethic Primer illuminates a moral framework behind this praxis and proves its versatility in global contexts. With essays by a diverse group of scholars, A Just Peace Ethic Primer outlines the ethical, theological, and activist underpinnings of a just peace ethic. These essays also demonstrate and revise the norms of a just peace ethic through conflict cases involving US immigration, racial and environmental justice, and the death penalty, as well as gang violence in El Salvador, civil war in South Sudan, ISIS in Iraq, gender-based violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, women-led activism in the Philippines, and ethnic violence in Kenya.A Just Peace Ethic Primer exemplifies the ecumenical, interfaith, and multicultural aspects of a nonviolent approach to preventing and transforming violent conflict. Scholars, advocates, and activists working in politics, history, international law, philosophy, theology, and conflict resolution will find this resource vital for providing a fruitful framework and implementing a creative vision of sustainable peace.",
