I.", "lastName": "Kassim" } ], "abstractNote": "The influences of the Samarra impoundment on the ecology of the downstream sector of the river Tigris was investigated to examine the persistence of the species downstream and to identify the important influential factors. Zooplankton were collected monthly from July 1987 to July 1988. Zooplankton were the most abundant during high river discharges in March. During the month of low river discharge, September, the zooplankton population was greatly reduced immediately below the barrage and remained at this low level to the last downstream station. Several factors seem to explain these differences in population density. The high discharge from the impoundment was the dominating factor and may flush the small backwaters in which zooplankton were abundant, thus increasing the population in the river. Zooplankton species vary in their ability to sustain populations in the river, variations which are due mainly to species-specific characteristics. Data were collected from the Chesapeake Bay mainstem and eight diverse subestuaries: the Choptank, Patapsco, Patuxent, Potomac, Rappathannock, York, James, and Elizabeth rivers. Anthropogenic impacts are evident despite the controlling influences of flow, salinity and temperature. Microzooplankton, an integral part of the \"microbial loop,\" correlate well (r super(2)>60) with chlorophyll and are excellent metazoan indicators of eutrophication. One species, a hypotrich ciliate, seems a good indicator of recent low DO events. Mesozooplankton, larger-bodied zooplankton which are food for most larval fish, are at present weakly linked to phytoplankton throughout, but are strongly linked to finfish planktivores during summer in most tidal fresh and oligohaline reaches. Food web management strategies developed for freshwater lakes can probably be applied to tidal fresh reaches with relatively long residence times, to bolster mesozooplankton populations and reduce algal blooms. Linkages between mesozooplankton and finfish planktivores are not clearcut in mesohaline and polyhaline waters, possibly because of invertebrate planktivore abundances. None of the largest striped bass nursery areas in the Chesapeake system had \"optimal\" food levels for normal striped bass larval growth during Spring (April-June). Only one (Choptank) consistently met \"minimum\" requirements (15-25 mesozooplankton liter super(-1)). Toxic pollutants are the confirmed cause of low zooplankton abundance in the Elizabeth River. In an attempt to determine the importance of these high cyanobacteria densities to planktonic herbivory in the system, short-term grazing experiments were conducted in July and August 1987. Using size-fractionated river phytoplankton assemblages, zooplankton grazing rates were determined for dominant or subdominant planktonic microzooplankton and mesozooplankton feeding on super(14)C-labeled river assemblages, super(14)C-labeled river assemblages enriched with unlabeled cyanobacteria, and unlabeled river assemblages enriched with super(14)C-labeled cyanobacteria. Grazing rates were estimated for the rotifers Polyarthra remata, Hexarthra mira, Asplanchna brightwelli, Brachionus angularis, Epiphanes sp., Trichocerca similis, and the cyclopoid copepod Cyclops vernalis. Neither rotifers nor the copepod grazed heavily on Microcystis. Rotifer grazing rates on labeled cyanobacteria ranged from 4 to 1,650 nl/[individual x h] while copepod rates ranged from undetectable to 135 mu l/[copepod x h]. Grazing rates on labeled river phytoplankton assemblages were 4-100 times higher than noted for zooplankton feeding on cyanobacteria. The addition of the colonial alga to labeled river phytoplankton assemblages resulted in mixed zooplankton responses, that is, lower and higher grazing rates than observed on river assemblages with no added cyanobacteria. Total zooplankton demand for cyanobacteria and river phytoplankton assemblages was estimated for the study period July-August 1987. Rotifer plus C. vernalis herbivory would have removed 1-5% and 49%, respectively, of the standing stock of the two autotroph pools each day. Literature-derived clearance rates for Bosmina indicateP, however, that herbivory by this cladoceran could increase demand to 24% and 60%, respectively, in bloom and nonbloom assemblages. Zooplankton distribution was found to be similar at both times with only minor shifts in location. Observed plankton distribution is shown to correlate well with a hydrologically established zonation scheme. Despite continual exchange between oceanic, coastal and inshore coastal waters, there is only occasional estuarine penetration into the inshore region and little penetration of inshore plankton into the estuary. The tidal zone is shown to be stable, well defined and characterized by estuarine and marine species. It is suggested that in a similar estuarine system, where the zooplankton distribution is well known, the hydrological zones can be inferred. The estuary of the Werribee River, Victoria, contains most of the same copepod species and is similar in otherways to the Derwent River estuary. The monthly sampling procedure included the measurement of hydrological parameters (salinity, temperature, Secchi transparency, chlorophyll a and nutrients) and the collection of zooplankton with a Bongo net of 335 mu m mesh size. Zooplankton composition, distribution, density, biomass and diversity were determined. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed the existence of a spatial gradient with the upstream sampling stations, associated to high values of nutrients, in opposition to the downstream stations characterized by higher salinity and transparency values. The Copepoda was the main dominant group and Acartia tonsa revealed to be the more abundant taxon. The spatial and temporal dynamics of zooplanktonic communities analysed by non-metric MDS showed the existence of four assemblages of species-sites, reflecting differences in zooplankton composition between both branches of the estuary. The results suggest that abundance, biomass and diversity of the zooplanktonic community are strongly influenced by the hydrological circulation pattern and by direct or indirect human impacts that occur in each branch. This study analyzes the structure of the microcrustacean assemblages (Copepoda and Cladocera) in a cascade of 8 reservoirs in the Paranapanema River. Samples were obtained during 8 campaigns through a vertical haul (from bottom to surface) with a net with 50 urn of mesh size in 19 stations distributed along the watershed (ca. 700 km). The 3 main tributaries were sampled downstream, just like the mouth zone ot the Paranapanema River into the Parana River. Nineteen species of Copepoda and 56 of Cladocera were identified. This high richness confirms the importance of considering the entire watershed for the elaboration of regional inventories. The main species were Notodiaptomus henseni, N. iheringi, Thermocyclops minutus, T. decipiens, Mesocyclops longisetus, M. meridianus and M. ogunnus, among the copepods, and the cladocerans Daphnia gessneri, Ceriodaphnia cornuta rigaudi, C. cornuta cornuta, C. silvestrii, Diaphanosoma spinulosum, D. birgei, D. brevireme, D. fluviatile, Moina minuta, Bosmina hagmanni and Bosminopsis deitersi. The seasonal occurrence of the main species is discussed. A downstream increase in richness (River Continuum Concept) was not observed. The transition zones (riverine to lacustrine) and the zones connected to flooded areas and lagoons have a positive effect on the richness. Comparisons of the diaptomidae composition and dominance between decades indicate an important structural change, probably related to the increase in the trophic conditions. Two different conditions favor the increase in abundance: higher water retention time and also of the trophic conditions. Temporal and longitudinal (intra-reservoir) trends were observed but they could not be generalized. The variation of the relative abundance of the cladoceran families and Thermocyclops species, as well as of the Shannon diversity index, were related to the different trophic and hydrodynamic conditions in the cascade. The analysis of the microcrustacean composition and abundance has allowed the identification of important spatial patterns in the hydrographic watershed, including the effects of damming.", "publicationTitle": "Limnetica [Limnetica].
