"abstractNote": "Photovoltaic (PV) systems are one of the next generation's renewable\nenergy sources for our world energy demand. PV modules are highly\nreliable. However, in polluted environments, over time, they will\ncollect grime and dust. There are also limited field data studies about\nsoiling losses on PV modules. The study showed how important it is to\ninvestigate the effect of tilt angle on soiling. The study includes two\nsets of mini-modules. Each set has 9 PV modules tilted at 0, 5, 10, 15,\n20, 23, 30, 33 and 40°. The first set called \"Cleaned\" was cleaned\nevery other day. The second set called \"Soiled\" was never cleaned after\nthe first day. The short circuit current, a measure of irradiance, and\nmodule temperature was monitored and recorded every two minutes over\nthree months (January-March 2011). The data were analyzed to investigate\nthe effect of tilt angle on daily and monthly soiling, and hence\ntransmitted solar insolation and energy production by PV modules. The\nstudy shows that during the period of January through March 2011 there\nwas an average loss due to soiling of approximately 2.02% for 0°\ntilt angle. Modules at tilt angles 23° and 33° also have some\ninsolation losses but do not come close to the module at 0° tilt\nangle. Tilt angle 23° has approximately 1.05% monthly insolation\nloss, and 33° tilt angle has an insolation loss of approximately\n0.96%. The soiling effect is present at any tilt angle, but the\nmagnitude is evident: the flatter the solar module is placed the more\nenergy it will lose. \n\nPhotovoltaic Modules: Effect of Tilt Angle on Soiling - ResearchGate. "abstractNote": "Here we present results highlighting the differences that soiling and cleaning have on concentrated photovoltaic arrays (CPV) specifically focusing on ultra high concentration, >1000 Suns, photovoltaic (UHCPV) arrays in a desert environment. Soiling losses in UHCPV arrays differ from those of conventional photovoltaic (PV) arrays, to illustrate this difference we present a direct comparison between a UHCPV array and a conventional PV array showing that soiling has an approximately five times larger effect on the UHCPV array compared to a PV array. The soiling effect has been measured by taking current–voltage curves of the arrays and monitoring the power output of a system’s photovoltaic inverter before and after cleaning. The results indicate that in a desert environment there will be some extreme weather events that require cleaning of all types of PV modules. They also indicate that even if it is not economically feasible to clean a PV system, that a CPV system is different enough in its response to soiling and cleaning that further studies and modeling are warranted. We also discuss our current cleaning process, dust prevention methods, and cleaning schedules in an attempt to stimulate further study in these areas.",

"abstractNote": "Several airports in the US have recently installed large photovoltaic (PV) arrays near air-operations areas to offset energy demands, and the US Federal Aviation Administration has published guidelines for new solar installations on airport properties. Although an increased reliance on solar energy will likely benefit airports from environmental and economic perspectives, bird use of solar installations should be examined before wide-scale implementation to determine whether such changes in land use adversely affect aviation safety by increasing risk of bird-aircraft collisions. We studied bird use of five pairs of PV arrays and nearby airport grasslands in Arizona, Colorado, and Ohio, over one year. Across locations, we observed 46 species of birds in airfield grasslands compared to 37 species in PV arrays. We calculated a bird hazard index (BHI) based on the mean seasonal mass of birds per area surveyed. General linear model analysis indicated that BHI was influenced by season, with higher BHI in summer than fall and winter. We found no effect of treatment (PV arrays vs. airfields), location, or interactions among predictors. However, using a nonparametric two-group test across all seasons and locations, we found greater BHI in airfield grasslands than PV arrays for those species considered especially hazardous to aircraft (species ≥ 1.125 kg). Our results suggest that converting airport grasslands to PV arrays would not increase hazards associated with bird-aircraft collisions.",
