In addition, the factorial structure of the Maslach-Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) is assessed and the relationship between engagement and burnout is examined. Simultaneous confirmatory factor analyses in both samples confirmed the original three-factor structure of the MBI-GS (exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy) as well as the hypothesized three-factor structure of engagement (vigor, dedication, and absorption). Contrary to expectations, a model with two higher-order factors – ‘burnout’ and ‘engagement’ – did not show a superior fit to the data. Instead, our analyses revealed an alternative model with two latent factors including: (1) exhaustion and cynicism (‘core of burnout’); (2) all three engagement scales plus efficacy. Both latent factors are negatively related and share between 22% and 38% of their variances in both samples. The authors conducted a comprehensive assessment of how learning environment, clinical rotation factors, workload, demographics and personal life events relate to student burnout.\nMETHODS: All medical students (n = 3080) at five medical schools were surveyed in the spring of 2006 using a validated instrument to assess burnout. Students were also asked about the aforementioned factors.\nRESULTS: A total of 1701 medical students (response rate 55%) completed the survey. Learning climate factors were associated with student burnout on univariate analysis (odds ratio [OR] 1.36-2.07; all P < or = 0.02). Being on a hospital ward rotation or a rotation requiring overnight call was also associated with burnout (ORs 1.69 and 1.48, respectively; both P < or = 0.02). Other workload characteristics (e.g. number of admissions) had no relation to student burnout. Students who experienced a positive personal life event had a lower frequency of burnout (OR 0.70; P < or = 0.02), whereas those who experienced negative personal life events did not have a higher frequency of burnout than students who did not experience a negative personal life event. On multivariate analysis personal characteristics, learning environment and personal life events were all independently related to student burnout.\nCONCLUSIONS: Although a complex array of personal and professional factors influence student well-being, student satisfaction with specific characteristics of the learning environment appears to be a critical factor. The risk for burnout is significantly increased in certain occupations, notably for health care workers. Beyond the effects of an extensive workload, many working hours, or long night shifts, the medical field has specific stressors. Physicians work in emotionally demanding environments with patients, families, or other medical staff. They must make quick decisions while faced with a quite frequent information overload. All of these stressors have to be weighed against a rapidly changing organizational context within medicine. Today, economics objectives have priority over medical values in health care. In principal, mental health workers should experience similar work stressors and the same contextual factors as health professionals from other medical disciplines. However, several studies have identified stressors that are unique to the psychiatric profession. These challenges range from the stigma of this profession, to particularly demanding relationships with patients and difficult interactions with other mental health professionals as part of multidisciplinary teams to personal threats from violent patients. Other sources of stress are a lack of positive feedback, low pay, and a poor work environment. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the expected three-factor structures of the adapted versions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for students (including Exhaustion, Cynicism, and Reduced Efficacy) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for students (including Vigor, Dedication, and Absorption) fitted to the data of each sample. However, a rigorous test revealed that most factor loadings of the MBI were not invariant across all samples. Results with the UWES were slightly better, indicating invariance of factor loadings of Absorption in all samples and of Vigor in two of the three samples. Furthermore, as hypothesized, the burnout and engagement subscales were negatively correlated. Finally, irrespective of country, Efficacy and Vigor were positively related to academic performance, that is, the number of passed exams relative to the total number of exams in the previous term.", cantidad de recursos f�sicos y psicol�gicos de\ndiversa �ndole. Muchos de ellos dejan sus estudios o\ndisminuyen de manera considerable su rendimiento\nacad�mico sin encontrar una explicaci�n. Dos variables\nque han sido poco estudiadas en nuestro\ncontexto y que pueden dar claridad a buena parte\nde esta situaci�n son el burnout y la satisfacci�n.\nEn esta investigaci�n se estableci� la relaci�n\ndel burnout, el rendimiento acad�mico, con la\nsatisfacci�n frente a los estudios en una muestra\nde 202 universitarios de la jornada nocturna de\nuna universidad privada de Barranquilla, quienes\nrespondieron el MBI-SS (Schaufeli, Mart�nez,\nMarques Pinto, Salanova, & Bakker, 2002). Los\nresultados indican correlaciones negativas entre\nagotamiento, cinismo, autoeficacia y rendimiento\nacad�mico con la satisfacci�n frente al estudio,\nmientras que el vigor, dedicaci�n y absorci�n\nse correlacionaron positivamente con esta. Por\notro lado, el buen funcionamiento acad�mico se\ncorrelaciona positivamente con las dimensiones\ndel engagement y negativamente con el cinismo;\nde manera particular, ninguna de las variables se\ncorrelaciona con el agotamiento, a pesar de evidenciar\ncinismo y baja autoeficacia.\n\nGenerally speaking, one of the main goals of\nuniversities is to strengthen the teaching and learning\nprocesses, as well as the health and well-being\nprocesses, guaranteeing the integral formation to\nthe professional future. In this case, it is necessary\nto establish the relationship between burnout and\nacademic performance with the satisfaction related\nto the studies. This research was carried out with\n202 university students of the evening schedule\nin a private university of Barranquilla, to whom\nwas applied the MBI-SS (Schaufeli, et �l. 2002).\nThe analysis of results reflects negative correlations\nbetween exhaustion, cynicism, self-efficacy\nand academic performance with the satisfaction\nrelated to the studies, while the vigour, dedication\nand absorption were positively correlated with\nthe satisfaction related to the studies. Organizational employees (N = 466) completed measures of burnout and 6 areas of worklife at 2 times with a 1-year interval. Those people who showed an inconsistent pattern at Time 1 were more likely to change over the year than were those who did not. Among this group, those who also displayed a workplace incongruity in the area of fairness moved to burnout at Time 2, while those without this incongruity moved toward engagement.
