"note": "
In this scientific journal, a study done a rhesus monkeys is being evaluated for its failure. A team of doctors injected rhesus monkeys with AIDS/HIV, and then tested a potential vaccine on these monkeys. The vaccine failed, and allowed for a “viral escape” which caused the apes to die of AIDS related complications. This publication is in a scientific journal, and will present very little bias due to its researchbased nature. Although the vaccine was a failure, the fact that vaccines are being tested around this time period (early 2000’s) shows that the AIDS epidemic was on the rise, and helps further enforce the points made by both my primary source and other sources used in this bibliography. The intended audience was scientists and researchers, which shows that the scientific community was working to develop a cure for AIDS (enforces the severity/prevalence of HIV/AIDS).
",

            "note": "
In 2001, the MMWR weekly journal, published an article discussing the impact of HIV/AIDS on a global scale. This article reports that the number of HIV/AIDS patients has risen drastically throughout the globe, with Africa showing the most amount of AIDS patients. The African epidemic is mainly located in the sub Saharan region, with many countries experience high rates of HIV infections, such as Botswana, which has a severe epidemic with 36% of the adult population being HIV positive. The MMWR is a medical journal that focuses on various medical topics throughout the world, and is very unlikely to show any bias due to their purpose as an academic journal. In addition to discussing the impact of AIDS, MMWR also discusses how treatments and preventional tactics have proven rather successful even in countries with “modest resources”. This document is meant to be read by physicians and other members of the medical community to inform them of the rise of AIDS which shows how the publication of this type of publication further reinforces the severity of AIDS. This document can be related to Joe Greenwood’s interview because they both highlight the steady increase of HIV infection, and the

various forms of “treatment”.
",

The points provided by my primary source are further reinforced by this document, which shows the severity and lack of attention of the HIV virus. This document shows no bias because it is an academic journal, and can be considered a reliable source due to its academic nature. This source helps

contribute to the points provided by the other documents presented as well as the primary

source.
",

            "note": "
The Age of Aids is a documentary film that was made in 2006 and originally aired on PBS as a Frontline 25 year anniversary documentary. The TV episode shows horrifying images of AIDS victims, and discusses in detail through various interviews (both doctors and patients) the rise of AIDS in the early 80’s into the current age. This documentary relies primarily on visual and verbal modes of presentation, and use these modes to show how dangerous and prevalent the epidemic of HIV/AIDS is. This video may show some bias towards the AIDS agenda because many of the interviewees have a personal connection to AIDS, whether it be as a patient or as a physician. Bias may also be present because filmmakers often to stretch the truth or even flat out lie to help make their film more entertaining to the audience. Many of my other sources can be paralleled to this one because many discuss the rise of AIDS, and how the epidemic is continually growing. This source was aired on PBS, meaning it was intended for an audience of the general public as an informative and entertaining broadcast about the explosion of AIDS in the last several

decades.
",

The use of the Olympics as a media source shows that the impact of AIDS is global as opposed to just the United States. The pin was a part of various pins for the 1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, which shows that the intended audience is the general public and Olympic participants. This source, along with the others, helps highlight how AIDS was a prevalent problem of the time period and was being presented in to the public constantly. The pin shows a red ribbon overlaid by a gold Olympic symbol and title. This pin has almost no possibility of bias because it is a physical item that was made purely to promote the Olympics. Joe Greenwood, who at the time of the 1996 Olympics was one of the longest AIDS survivors in Atlanta, had a very heavy involvement in the movement to make AIDS a public issue, and this pin is parallel with his cause.
",

In 2001, the average AIDS victim lived for 19 years after infected. But as of today, the average time left for an AIDS patient is 55 years. The treatments have made huge progress since Joe Greenwood pushed for more AIDS research back in 2001, when AIDS was just a rising epidemic. This source is a reliable source that I chose to be a part of this research because it presents facts and numbers, as opposed to descriptions which are often biased and offer a skewed view of the problem at hand. This source is relatively different

from other sources that I am using because it is a recent article that shows the happenings of the

last 14 years of AIDS, as opposed to articles and sources that were created when my primary

source was created.             "note": "
This article discusses the affect of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on children and youth worldwide. Being a jointly published book by UNICEF, UNAIDS, and the World Health Organization, it is interesting to read on what these major organizations plan in regard to the epidemic. It claims this is important because:
\n
            1. Young people have sex
\n
            2. Young people lack information
\n
            3. Girls are every vulnerable
\n
            4. Many young people are at especially high risk
\n
            5. Young people are reversing the trends
\n
Because of these reasons this article formulates different plans and responses for young people and how to educate them. This article serves to once again see another viewpoint and certain target groups with the disease. While this is certainly a difficult topic to tackle this article does a good job addressing the topic realistically and with poise.
\n

\n

\n

\n

",

Making a joke of the Catholic Church’s bold claim calling condoms and other contraceptives sinful in nature, this artist makes quite a point. A topic that is quite controversial to many people with religious beliefs, the use of contraceptives as a whole, is made all the more controversial with the addition of AIDS, homosexuality, and other STD’s to the conversation. The acronym given for AIDS here, “Acquired Intelligence Deficiency Syndrome,” can be looked at in two ways. First, of the views from most protestant denominations of faith that agree that this claim by the Catholic Church is absurd and unbiblical. Second, of the secular viewpoint that finds this even more absurd because safe sex is their logical over abstinence. Either way you look at it this image definitely strikes a chord with all three parties and provides good insight on the common view of the Catholic Church’s claim.
",

Written by Aziza Ahmed and featured in a Harvard Law journal this article tackles the problems, dilemmas, and struggles of women and the HIV virus. Once again this article serves to analyze the AIDS problem from yet another worldview, this time that of a feminist. With chapters discussing “U.S. Bilateral Aid for HIV and Sex Work: The Case of the Anti-Prostitution Pledge” and “Women’s Greater Exposure to Violence via Criminalizing the Client” it discusses the problems of prostitution and sexual violence as it related to this disease. This article also touches on the problems with government legislation, funding, and women’s rights in employment and how it interacts with the HIV virus. This is reliable, well organized, and provides good analysis on the how the feminist movement is approaching and affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
",
