"abstractNote": "The Sun rotates differentially with a fast equator and slow pole1. Convection in the solar interior is thought to maintain the differential rotation. However, although many numerical simulations have been conducted to reproduce the solar differential rotation2-7, previous high-resolution calculations with solar parameters fall into the antisolar (fast-pole) differential rotation regime. Consequently, we still do not know the true reason why the Sun has a fast-rotating equator. While the construction of the fast equator requires a strong rotational influence on the convection, the previous calculations have not been able to achieve the situation without any manipulations. The problem is called the convective conundrum8. The convection and the differential rotation in numerical simulations were different from the observations. Here, we show that a high-resolution calculation succeeds in reproducing the solar-like differential rotation. Our calculations indicate that the strong magnetic field generated by a small-scale dynamo has a significant impact on thermal convection. The successful reproduction of the differential rotation, convection and magnetic field achieved in our calculation is an essential step to understanding the cause of the most basic nature of solar activity, specifically, the 11 yr cycle of sunspot activity.",

"abstractNote": "We analyse spatially resolved ALMA observations at 0.9, 1.3, and 3.1 mm for the 26 brightest protoplanetary discs in the Lupus star-forming region. We characterize the discs multiwavelength brightness profiles by fitting the interferometric visibilities in a homogeneous way, obtaining effective disc sizes at the three wavelengths, spectral index profiles, and optical depth estimates. We report three fundamental discoveries: first, the millimetre continuum size–luminosity relation already observed at 0.9 mm is also present at 1.3 mm with an identical slope, and at 3.1 mm with a steeper slope, confirming that emission at longer wavelengths becomes increasingly optically thin. Second, when observed at 3.1 mm the discs appear to be only 9 per cent smaller than when observed at 0.9 mm, in tension with models of dust evolution that predict a starker difference. Third, by forward modelling the sample of measurements with a simple parametric disc model, we find that the presence of large grains ($a_\\mathrm{max}\\gt 1\\,$ mm) throughout the discs is the most favoured explanation for all discs as it reproduces simultaneously their spectral indices, optical depth, luminosity, and radial extent in the 0.9–1.3 mm wavelength range. We also find that the observations can be alternatively interpreted with the discs being dominated by optically thick, unresolved, substructures made of mm-sized grains with a high scattering albedo.",

"abstractNote": "The destabilising effect of Hall diffusion in a Keplerian disc allows the MRI to occur for much lower ionisation levels than would otherwise be possible. However, simulations suggest that the consequences for the saturated state are not as significant as suggested by the linear instability. Close inspection reveals that that the simulations have not yet probed the Hall-dominated regime. Here we revisit the effect of Hall diffusion on the MRI and the implications for the extent of MHD turbulence in protoplanetary discs. We conduct a local stability analysis for a vertical, weak magnetic field subject to axisymmetric perturbations with a vertical wave vector. The diffusivity dependence is presented using analytic expressions and contours in the eta_H - eta_P plane for the maximum growth rate and corresponding wave number, the upper cut-off for unstable wave numbers, and the loci that divide the plane into regions of different characteristic behaviour. In the highly-diffusive limit the magnetic field decouples from the fluid perturbations and the diffusive MRI reduces to a diffusive plane-parallel shear instability with effective shear rate 1.5 Omega. We give analytic expressions for the growth rate and wave number of the most unstable mode. Finally, we illustrate the critical effect of Hall diffusion on the extent of dead zones in protoplanetary discs by applying a local stability criterion to a simple model of the minimum-mass solar nebula at 1 au, including x-ray and cosmic-ray ionisation and a population of 1 micron grains. Hall diffusion increases or decreases the MRI-active column density by an order of magnitude or more, depending on whether B is parallel or antiparallel to the rotation axis, respectively. Existing estimates of the depth of magnetically active layers in protoplanetary discs are likely to be wildly inaccurate. [Abridged]",

"abstractNote": "Aims: In this paper we present two efficient implementations of the diffusion approximation to be employed in Monte Carlo computations of radiative transfer in dusty media of massive circumstellar disks. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the computed temperature structure and to decrease the computation time. The accuracy, efficiency, and\napplicability of the methods in various corners of parameter space are investigated. The effects of using these methods on the vertical structure of the circumstellar disk as obtained from hydrostatic equilibrium computations are also addressed. Methods: Two methods are presented. First, an energy diffusion approximation is used to improve the accuracy of the temperature structure in highly obscured regions of the disk, where photon counts are low. Second, a modified random walk approximation is employed to decrease the computation time. This modified random walk ensures that the photons that end up in the high-density regions can quickly escape to the lower density regions, while the energy deposited by these photons in the disk is still computed accurately. A new radiative transfer code, MCMax, is presented in which both these diffusion approximations are implemented. These can be used simultaneously to increase both computational speed and decrease statistical noise. Results: We conclude that the diffusion approximations allow for fast and accurate computations of the\ntemperature structure, vertical disk structure and observables of very optically thick circumstellar disks.",

In order to test the\nreliability of such tools, we present a benchmark of radiative transfer\ncodes in a 2D disc configuration. Methods: We test the accuracy\nof seven independently developed radiative transfer codes by comparing\nthe temperature structures, spectral energy distributions, scattered\nlight images, and linear polarisation maps that each model predicts for\na variety of disc opacities and viewing angles. The test cases have been\nchosen to be numerically challenging, with midplane optical depths up\n10^6, a sharp density transition at the inner edge and complex\nscattering matrices. We also review recent progress in the\nimplementation of the Monte Carlo method that allow an efficient\nsolution to these kinds of problems and discuss the advantages and\nlimitations of Monte Carlo codes compared to those of discrete ordinate\ncodes. Results: For each of the test cases, the predicted results\nfrom the radiative transfer codes are within good agreement. The results\nindicate that these codes can be confidently used to interpret present\nand future observations of protoplanetary discs.",

"abstractNote": "We describe a module for the Athena code that solves the gray equations \nof radiation hydrodynamics (RHD), based on the first two moments of the\nradiative transfer equation. We use a combination of explicit Godunov\nmethods to advance the gas and radiation variables including the\nnon-stiff source terms, and a local implicit method to integrate the\nstiff source terms. We adopt the M 1 closure relation and\ninclude all leading source terms to {O}(β τ). We employ the\nreduced speed of light approximation (RSLA) with subcycling of the\nradiation variables in order to reduce computational costs. Our code is\ndimensionally unsplit in one, two, and three space dimensions and is\nparallelized using MPI. The streaming and diffusion limits are well\ndescribed by the M 1 closure model, and our implementation\nshows excellent behavior for a problem with a concentrated radiation\nsource containing both regimes simultaneously. Our operator-split method\nis ideally suited for problems with a slowly varying radiation field and\ndynamical gas flows, in which the effect of the RSLA is minimal. We\npresent an analysis of the dispersion relation of RHD linear waves\nhighlighting the conditions of applicability for the RSLA. To\ndemonstrate the accuracy of our method, we utilize a suite of radiation\nand RHD tests covering a broad range of regimes, including RHD waves,\nshocks, and equilibria, which show second-order convergence in most\ncases. As an application, we investigate radiation-driven ejection of a\ndusty, optically thick shell in the ISM. Finally, we compare the timing\nof our method with other well-known iterative schemes for the RHD\nequations. Our code implementation, Hyperion, is suitable for a wide\nvariety of astrophysical applications and will be made freely available\non the Web.",

"abstractNote": "From a mathematical perspective, radiation hydrodynamics can be thought of as a system of hyperbolic balance laws with dual multiscale behavior (multiscale behavior associated with the hyperbolic wave speeds as well as multiscale behavior associated with source term relaxation). With this outlook in mind, this paper presents a hybrid Godunov method for one-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics that is uniformly well behaved from the photon free streaming (hyperbolic) limit through the weak equilibrium diffusion (parabolic) limit and to the strong equilibrium diffusion (hyperbolic) limit. Moreover, one finds that the technique preserves certain asymptotic limits. The method incorporates a backward Euler upwinding scheme for the radiation energy density Er and flux Fr as well as a modified Godunov scheme for the material density ρ, momentum density m, and energy density E. The backward Euler upwinding scheme is first-order accurate and uses an implicit HLLE flux function to temporally advance the radiation\ncomponents according to the material flow scale. The modified Godunov scheme is second-order accurate and directly couples stiff source term effects to the hyperbolic structure of the system of balance laws. This Godunov technique is composed of a predictor step that is based on Duhamel's principle and a corrector step that is based on Picard iteration. The Godunov scheme is explicit on the material flow scale but is unsplit and fully couples matter and radiation without invoking a diffusion-type approximation for radiation hydrodynamics. This technique derives from earlier work by Miniati and Colella (2007) [41]. Numerical tests demonstrate that the method is stable, robust, and accurate across various parameter regimes.",

"abstractNote": "We describe the implementation of a module for the Athena \nmagnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code that solves the time-independent, multi-frequency radiative transfer (RT) equation on multidimensional Cartesian simulation domains, including scattering and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) effects. The module is based on well known and well tested algorithms developed for modeling stellar\natmospheres, including the method of short characteristics to solve the RT equation, accelerated Lambda iteration to handle scattering and non-LTE effects, and parallelization via domain decomposition. The module serves several purposes: it can be used to generate spectra and images, to compute a variable Eddington tensor (VET) for full radiation MHD simulations, and to calculate the heating and cooling source terms in the MHD equations in flows where radiation pressure is small compared with gas pressure. For the latter case, the module is combined with the standard MHD integrators using operator splitting: we describe this approach in detail, including a new constraint on the time step for stability due to radiation diffusion modes. Implementation of the VET method for radiation pressure dominated flows is described in a\ncompanion paper. We present results from a suite of test problems for both the RT solver itself and for dynamical problems that include radiative heating and cooling. These tests demonstrate that the\nradiative transfer solution is accurate and confirm that the operator split method is stable, convergent, and efficient for problems of interest. We demonstrate there is no need to adopt ad hoc assumptions of questionable accuracy to solve RT problems in concert with MHD: the computational cost for our general-purpose module for simple (e.g., LTE gray) problems can be comparable to or less than a single time step of Athena's MHD integrators, and only few times more expensive than that for more general (non-LTE) problems.",

Conservative differencing is\nused for the transport terms, which ensures the specific intensity (as\nwell as energy and momentum) are conserved along each ray to round-off\nerror. The use of implicit methods for the source terms ensures the\nmethod is stable even if the source terms are very stiff. To couple the\nsolution of the transfer equation to the MHD algorithms in the ATHENA\ncode, we perform direct quadrature of the specific intensity over angles\nto compute the energy and momentum source terms. We present the results\nof a variety of tests of the method, such as calculating the structure\nof a non-LTE atmosphere, an advective diffusion test, linear wave\nconvergence tests, and the well-known shadow test. We use new\nsemi-analytic solutions for radiation modified shocks to demonstrate the\nability of our algorithm to capture the effects of an anisotropic\nradiation field accurately. Since the method uses explicit differencing\nof the spatial operators, it shows excellent weak scaling on parallel\ncomputers.",

"abstractNote": "We describe a numerical algorithm to integrate the equations of \nradiation magnetohydrodynamics in multidimensions using Godunov methods.\nThis algorithm solves the radiation moment equations in the mixed frame,\nwithout invoking any diffusion-like approximations. The moment equations\nare closed using a variable Eddington tensor whose components are\ncalculated from a formal solution of the transfer equation at a large\nnumber of angles using the method of short characteristics. We use a\ncomprehensive test suite to verify the algorithm, including convergence\ntests of radiation-modified linear acoustic and magnetosonic waves, the\nstructure of radiation-modified shocks, and two-dimensional tests of\nphoton bubble instability and the ablation of dense clouds by an intense\nradiation field. These tests cover a very wide range of regimes,\nincluding both optically thick and thin flows, and ratios of the\nradiation to gas pressure of at least 10-4-104.\nAcross most of the parameter space, we find that the method is accurate.\nHowever, the tests also reveal there are regimes where the method needs\nimprovement, for example when both the radiation pressure and absorption\nopacity are very large. We suggest modifications to the algorithm that\nwill improve the accuracy in this case. We discuss the advantages of\nthis method over those based on flux-limited diffusion. In particular,\nwe find that the method is not only substantially more accurate, but\noften no more expensive than the diffusion approximation for our\nintended applications.",
