Se consideraba, junto con la racionalidad, la capacidad de la contemplación y hasta la facultad para crear herramientas, como una característica más de la naturaleza humana, sin que mereciera ello una aproximación profunda al fenómeno en sí. Desde las pinturas rupestres hasta las nuevas tecnologías de información y comunicación, sin olvidar las obras de arte y la letra impresa, la comunicación es en el ser humano una característica tan inherente a su naturaleza como el pensar. Paradójico es que hasta ahora ni lingüistas ni teóricos de la comunicación se ponen de acuerdo sobre si se pensaría igual sin la introyección previa de un lenguaje, más aún, si se podría pensar siquiera. Cierto es que el lenguaje reduce las posibilidades de la comunicación, pues encasilla sentimientos, actitudes y razonamientos en palabras que no necesariamente gozan del significado original, así pues
