\nMarie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier, or comte de Choiseul-Gouffier, was a French nobleman and diplomat who lived from 1752 to 1817. As a child, Choiseul-Gouffier received a classical education and developed an interest in classical literature and antiquities. Moreover, he was living at \"a time of heightened interest in the archeological explloration of classical sites, especially those of Greece, and in the critical appraisal of its art and literature. Caylus's Recueil d'antiquités (1761), Le Roy's Le Ruines de plus beaux monuments de la Grèce (1770), Winckelmann's studies of ancient art, Guys's Voyage littéraire de la Grèce (1771), the works of the English scholars Richard Chandler (PB), Richard Pococke, James Stuart, and Nicholas Revett, to mention a few, brought Greece closer to Europeans\" (Augustinos 157-158). This book is a record of Choiseul-Gouffier's first exploration of the eastern Mediterranean, through the Aegean islands and into Asia Minor and Constantinople. This journey began in March 1776 and, proceeding quickly, ended back in France in early 1777, after Choiseul-Gouffier fell ill in Smyrna (Augustinos 158). When Choiseul-Gouffier returned, he tried to write up \"the results of his voyage\" for an audience of Hellenists. One step he made in this direction was to contact d'Anville, a geographer also in this collection, for assistance. Although d'Anville declined to collaborate with Choiseul-Gouffier, Barbié du Bocage, one of d'Anville's students, agreed to work with him, a relationship that would prove to be lifelong (Augustinos 158-159).
\nOf the reception of this book, \"The first volume was completed in 1782 and won immediate critical acclaim.\" It received foreign translations, and Choiseul-Gouffier received invitations to join the Académie des inscriptions (1779), the Académie des beaux-arts (1782), and the Académie française (1782),\" (Augustinos 159). This is the volume that we possess in this record.
\nChoiseul-Gouffier served as ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 to 1791, which interrupted his plans for the second volume. One source of trouble was that he had advocated for the removal of Turkish rule from Greece, which was not a good position for an ambassador to the Ottomans to have taken. He did his best to get those published writings hushed up, but it was tricky. Choiseul-Gouffier continued his investigations into Greek antiquity, especially around Troy, I think, while he was serving as ambassador.
\nIn 1791, however, the French Revolution began, after which Choiseul-Gouffier \"was recalled and named ambassador to England. He refused to accept the new position as a sign of protest against the revolutionary government\" (162). After getting in trouble for being a royalist sympathizer, he fled from wherever he had been (France?) back to Constantinople and then to Russia, where he spent ten years serving as the director of the Academy of Fine Arts and also held an important position supervising the libraries.
\nAfter judging the danger passed, Choiseul-Gouffier returned to France in 1802, no longer so wealthy and no longer titled, he returned to completing his work, and published the first part of the second volume of the Voyage pittoresque in 1809. (He was retitled after the restoration of Louis XVI). The second part of the second volume was 'completed and edited' by du Bocage and Letronne. We have the second edition of this full edition, which was published in 1842.

\nSir George Wheler was an English traveler who lived from 1651 to 1724. After attending Oxford, paid for by an inheritance from the estate of Sir William Wheler, a distant relation, he set out for a tour of Europe in 1673.
\nIn late 1674 or in 1675, Wheler was in Rome, where he met Jacob Spon. Both men were acquainted with Jean-Foy Vaillant (who employed Guillaume-Joseph Grelot for some time) and were Protestants, which might explain how they struck up a friendship.
Wheler and Spon decided to travel together through the lands of classical antiquity, and their respective accounts of these journeys are included in this collection. Wheler financed this journey, as he was the wealthier of the two. Spon and Wheler traveled together through some of Italy, and stopped over in Constantinople before going to Greece. They made a point of going to Constantinople, but they spent only three weeks there before continuing back towards Greece, the primary destination of their travels.
\nWheler's account of their travels together, seeing classical antiquities, was called A Journey into Greece and was published in 1682. He was knighted in this year, after Charles II \"accepted Wheler's dedication of his travelogue to him\" (Mitsi 21). In 1683, the always devout Wheler became a clergyman. In 1689, he also published An Account of the Churches, which was an early attempt at archaeology concerning Christian sites.
\nWheler was also interested in botany, and left his collection of specimens to the Oxford Physic garden.

Note on authorship
\nThe relationship between Spon's Voyage d'Italie and Wheler's A Journey into Greece has been the subject of much discussion, because Wheler lifted and translated long sections of Spon's work into English without acknowledgment. Some scholars have alleged that this was plagiarism, although that term may not apply exactly to this time period. Wheler portrays his journey as collaborative, with the full title being A Journey into Greece in the Company of Dr. Spon of Lyons. The full title of Spon's book (and I do not know what, if anything, Wheler contributed to this work) suggests collaboration even more strongly, given that the title page calls the work Voyage D'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grece, et du Levant, Fait aux années 1675 & 1676, Par Jacob Spon Et George Wheler.
\nWhether or not \"par...George Wheler\" attributes some contribution to the Voyage's authorship is a question for another day, but these two works were clearly closely related. In the 1729 translation of Gilles, Ball cites either Wheler's Journey or Spon's Voyage for the engraving of the raising of the obelisk of Constantinople in two different ways. On the image itself, he cites it as being from \"Sr. George Wheler.\" In the table of illustrations at the beginning of the book, he cites it as being from \"Spon and Wheler.\" I don't know to which work, therefore, he is referring.
\nSpon and Wheler's books also share some dozen illustrations between them, although in no case do I think the images were printed from the same plate. I have noted many of these, which range from nearly-identical images (like the Temple of Theseus) to ones with some differences (the Parthenon) to quite different takes on the same scene (Lepanto). That said, the majority of their images are of different subjects, with Wheler having more images and many more images of plants, while Spon's work has some images of ancient classical ruins that Wheler's does not. There is somewhat less coincidence of their images than I would have expected, actually, given that they traveled together for their entire journey.
