            "abstractNote": "This work reports on studies of the multi-scale interaction between small-scale electron turbulence and large-scale ion turbulence in tokamak plasmas. Traditionally, the long-wavelength, low-frequency turbulence driven by ion-scale instabilities (ion-temperature-gradient and trapped-electron modes) is studied separately from the short-wavelength, high-frequency turbulence driven by electron-scale instabilities (electron-temperature-gradient modes). High-resolution, massively-parallel simulations have uncovered a number of physically-important discoveries. First, we find that a popular simplified model of ion physics previously used in studies of electron-scale turbulence can lead to nonphysical runaway of electron heat transport. We have shown that this nonphysical runaway is eliminated when correct long-wavelength ion physics is self-consistently included. We have also found that under normal conditions most of the electron heat transport arises from large-scale instabilities. However, when these large-scale instabilities are suppressed by plasma rotation or other processes, the electron instabilities survive and may dominate the loss of electron heat from the plasma. A further remarkable finding is that strong turbulence at long scales can act to reduce the intensity of turbulence at short scales. Simulations were carried out on the Cray X1E computer at ORNL, with the largest runs taking about a week on 720 multi-streaming processors.",

            "abstractNote": "Model mode-coupling equations for the resistive drift-wave instability are derived and numerically solved to study the properties of turbulence near a plasma edge. The wavenumber spectrum of the turbulence is found to exhibit an inverse cascade to form an isotropic, two-dimensional Kolmogorov spectrum, k-3, in the large-wave-number regime. The turbulence has a broad frequency spectrum with a large saturation level and produces Bohm-type particle diffusion.",

The main new idea is that, instead of choosing the \"smoothest\" stencil to pick one interpolating polynomial for the ENO reconstruction, we use a convex combination of all candidates to achieve the essentially non-oscillatory property, while additionally obtaining one order of improvement in accuracy.             "abstractNote": "FFTW is an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) that adapts to the hardware in order to maximize performance. This paper shows that such an approach can yield an implementation that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and describes the software structure that makes our current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive. We further discuss a new algorithm for real-data DFTs of prime size, a new way of implementing DFTs by means of machine-specific single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) instructions, and how a special-purpose compiler can derive optimized implementations of the discrete cosine and sine transforms automatically from a DFT algorithm.",

            "abstractNote": "We present the piecewise parabolic method, a higher-order extension of Godunov's method. There are several new features of this method which distinguish it from other higher-order Godunov-type methods. We use a higher-order spatial interpolation than previously used, which allows for a steeper representation of discontinuities, particularly contact discontinuities. We introduce a simpler and more robust algorithm for calculating the nonlinear wave interactions used to compute fluxes. Finally, we recognize the need for additional dissipation in any higher-order Godunov method of this type, and introduce it in such a way so as not to degrade the quality of the results.",

            "abstractNote": "In this paper, we review the development of the Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) methods for non-linear convection-dominated problems. These robust and accurate methods have made their way into the main stream of computational fluid dynamics and are quickly finding use in a wide variety of applications. They combine a special class of Runge–Kutta time discretizations, that allows the method to be non-linearly stable regardless of its accuracy, with a finite element space discretization by discontinuous approximations, that incorporates the ideas of numerical fluxes and slope limiters coined during the remarkable development of the high-resolution finite difference and finite volume schemes. The resulting RKDG methods are stable, high-order accurate, and highly parallelizable schemes that can easily handle complicated geometries and boundary conditions. We review the theoretical and algorithmic aspects of these methods and show several applications including nonlinear conservation laws, the compressible and incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, and Hamilton–Jacobi-like equations.",

            "abstractNote": "Validating predictive models of turbulent transport in magnetically confined plasmas requires comparisons of detailed fluctuation statistics, in addition to net energy flows. Using measurements from new and improved diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak, we have performed a series of comparisons against predictions from the GYRO code. The development and application of synthetic diagnostics that model the spatial sensitivities of a given experimental fluctuation diagnostic is essential for these comparisons. At r/a = 0.56, we find very good agreement between the predicted and measured energy fluxes and fluctuation power spectra. At r/a = 0.8, however, the simulations underpredict the energy flows by a factor of seven and fluctuation amplitudes by a factor of 3 but successfully reproduce the shapes of the experimentally measured fluctuation power spectra. At both locations significant attenuation in the synthetic power spectra and fluctuation levels is observed relative to 'unfiltered' levels. Additional results contrasting local and nonlocal simulation results and convergence in toroidal mode number spacing are presented.",

            "abstractNote": "This work reports on numerical studies of small-scale electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) turbulence embedded in large-scale turbulence driven by both ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) modes and trapped-electron modes. To begin with, we find that the simplified adiabatic-ion model of ETG turbulence does not always saturate nonlinearly, suggesting that corrections to the purely adiabatic ion response are required for robust saturation. Our results also qualitatively confirm a prediction of Holland and Diamond that the back-reaction of ETG on ITG turbulence is insignificant. For the parameters studied, we find that ETG turbulence levels are reduced as ion driving gradients are increased. This result is at least partially explained by linear physics. An important practical result of this work is the finding that most of the electron energy transport arises from ion scales (kthri \\textless 1) in cases for which ion-scale instabilities are not suppressed. Specifically, for the Cyclone base case parameters, only 16% of the energy diffusivity, khe, arises from the spectral region kthri \\textgreater 1.0.",

            "abstractNote": "High order WENO (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) schemes and discontinuous Galerkin methods are two classes of high order, high resolution methods suitable for convection dominated simulations with possible discontinuous or sharp gradient solutions. In this paper we first review these two classes of methods, pointing out their similarities and differences in algorithm formulation, theoretical properties, implementation issues, applicability, and relative advantages. We then present some quantitative comparisons of the third order finite volume WENO methods and discontinuous Galerkin methods for a series of test problems to assess their relative merits in accuracy and CPU timing.",

            "abstractNote": "The theory of flux-corrected transport (FCT) developed by Boris and Book [J. Comput. Phys. 11 (1973) 38; 18 (1975) 248; 20 (1976) 397] is placed in a simple, generalized format, and a new algorithm for implementing the critical flux limiting stage' in multidimensions without resort to time splitting is presented. The new flux limiting algorithm allows the use of FCT techniques in multidimensional fluid problems for which time splitting would produce unacceptable numerical results, such as those involving incompressible or nearly incompressible flow fields. The \"clipping\" problem associated with the original one dimensional flux limiter is also eliminated or alleviated. Test results and applications to a two dimensional fluid plasma problem are presented.",

            "abstractNote": "We report on the resolution of a significant discrepancy between published continuum-code simulations and subsequent global particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) turbulence. Our investigations, using gyrokinetic df-PIC- and continuum-code simulations and analytical theory, strongly support the conclusion from the earlier continuum-code simulations that ETG turbulence can drive the electron thermal conductivity khe large enough to be significant in some tokamaks. A successful ETG-turbulence benchmark between df-PIC and continuum codes for ETG turbulence has also been completed. Scans in the magnetic shear show an abrupt transition to a high-khe state as the shear is increased from the benchmark value of s = 0.1 to above s = 0.4. When nonadiabatic ions are used, this abrupt transition is absent, and khe reaches values consistent with transport analyses of DIII-D, JET, JT60-U and NSTX discharges. The balances of zonal-flow driving and damping terms in late-time quasi-steady phase of ITG turbulence have been unfolded using a new run-time gyrokinetic-simulation diagnostic. The zonal flow level is set by a balance of large driving and damping terms which almost cancel each other. The driving is found to be mostly by the Reynolds stress, while the dissipation is mostly by the linear (transit-time) damping terms. It is also shown that useful zonal-flow-balance information can be obtained with spatially localized samples at as few as four poloidal locations. Real-geometry simulations have been undertaken, using the nonlinear df-PIC gyrokinetic code SUMMIT/PG3EQ_NC, of the DIII-D 'Cyclone' shot #81499 and of shot #118561, which had broad-wavenumber-range density fluctuation measurements. Real geometry is found to have a significant effect on the transport rates, even though the effect on the linear growth rates is often modest.",

            "abstractNote": "Abstract  Strong stability preserving (SSP) high order time discretizations were developed to ensure nonlinear stability properties\nnecessary in the numerical solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations with discontinuous solutions. SSP methods\npreserve the strong stability properties—in any norm, seminorm or convex functional—of the spatial discretization coupled\nwith first order Euler time stepping. This paper describes the development of SSP methods and the connections between the\ntimestep restrictions for strong stability preservation and contractivity. Numerical examples demonstrate that common linearly\nstable but not strong stability preserving time discretizations may lead to violation of important boundedness properties,\nwhereas SSP methods guarantee the desired properties provided only that these properties are satisfied with forward Euler\ntimestepping. We review optimal explicit and implicit SSP Runge–Kutta and multistep methods, for linear and nonlinear problems.\nWe also discuss the SSP properties of spectral deferred correction methods.",

            "abstractNote": "We present a new recursive procedure to find a full f electrostatic gyrokinetic equation correct to first order in an expansion of gyroradius over magnetic field characteristic length. The procedure provides new insights into the limitations of the gyrokinetic quasineutrality equation. We find that the ion distribution function must be known at least to second order in gyroradius over characteristic length to calculate the long wavelength components of the electrostatic potential self-consistently. Moreover, using the example of a steady-state th-pinch, we prove that the quasineutrality equation fails to provide the axisymmetric piece of the potential even with a distribution function correct to second order. We also show that second order accuracy is enough if a more convenient moment equation is used instead of the quasineutrality equation. These results indicate that the gyrokinetic quasineutrality equation is not the most effective procedure to find the electrostatic potential if the long wavelength components are to be retained in the analysis.",
