"abstractNote": "This review was commissioned by the Cambridge Primary Review Trust to build on the\nextensive evidence on the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation presented and\ndiscussed in the final report of the Cambridge Primary Review (Alexander, 2010). The\nimplications of digital technologies for children’s current and future lives are far-reaching.\nDigital technologies are engrained in our institutions and infrastructures, in commerce,\npolitics, manufacturing and administration. They are central to many of the ways in which we\nform and sustain relationships, communicate ideas, and generate, share and distribute\nknowledge. They have become part of our social life, with implications for how we follow\nour interests and passions, the nature and extent of our participation in civic and political life,\nour relationship with the environment, and our position within multiple communities, local\nand dispersed. For many children digital devices and the possibilities they enable are\nthreaded through everyday life from the earliest days, and their early experiences and\nunderstandings are patterned by technology use. As the Cambridge Primary Review final\nreport concluded, much of ‘children’s out-of-school learning is electronic and beyond the\nreach of either parents or teachers’ (Alexander, 2010: 269). In education, therefore, there is a\nneed to explore the significance of the digital age not just in terms of preparing children for\nan uncertain future, but in ensuring they are confident, safe and discerning users of digital\ntechnologies now. The digital age has implications for curriculum, pedagogy and schools’\nwider role in supporting children’s emotional and social life, and indeed raises questions\nabout the purpose and nature of schools themselves, and how schools’ work relates to the\nwider political, economic and commercial context.",

By using New Literacy Studies as a frame of reference, we study how students’ conceptions of digital literacies and their positional identities are defined across school and home. In contrast to most other studies of similar issues, we study children in the age range from 9 to 13&nbsp;years old. The methods used are qualitative interviews and video observations of these students at three Norwegian primary schools. The analysis shows how various digital practices in the classroom become meaningful in the translation to leisure time. We discuss how digital practices initiated in the classroom may be relevant to students’ out-of-school worlds, based on how they get opportunities to unite and translate practices between these two contexts. This has to do with how school’s digital practices may be important in connecting identities across contexts. We argue that the issue of identity must be understood as connected to digital literacy. Our main thesis is that the school context plays a prominent role in introducing youngsters to new digital practices that might be important in developing their digital literacies.</span></p>",

The findings are reported in the context of social commentators’ anxieties about the ways in which childhood is being transformed by technology. Although we report evidence of some parental disquiet about the role of technology in children’s lives, we illustrate some of the complexities in families’ attitudes to, and uses of, technology and conclude that it is not perceived by parents to be the threat to modern childhood that is claimed. 2008 The Author(s). "abstractNote": "This book was developed from an ESRC funded research project (1998-2000) entitled 'ScreenPlay' conducted by researchers from Bristol, Cardiff and University of Wales Newport universities. The Directors of this project were Prof. R. Sutherland, Prof. J. Furlong and myself.\n Keri Facer was the Researcher on this project. The book was co-researched and written by this team using quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (case studies) methodologies in schools and in domestic settings.\n \n The interdisciplinary team drew from research perspectives including Psychology (Sutherland), Sociology and Education (Facer, Furlong, J., Furlong, R. and Sutherland) and Media and Cultural studies (Facer and Furlong, R.). The book set out to question the assumption that we are straightforwardly experiencing a 'techno-revolution' or living in a 'cybersociety' or that young people in countries like ours constitute a new 'digital generation'.\n \n The research set out to answer five questions:\n •\tWho has access to what screen-based technologies (home, school, other contexts)\n •\tUnder what social/physical circumstances do young people engage with these technologies\n •\tWhat is the significance of screen-based technologies in young people’s lives as a whole?\n •\tHow do young people learn to use computer technologies?\n •\tIn what ways do computer technologies enhance and transform children’s capabilities?\n \n ScreenPlay has led to debates at local, national and international levels in academic, popular and industry-linked venues about important issues concerning how we learn with the computer. It has explored how children may be disadvantaged if they own a computer but are unable to acquire the cultural capital to fully engage with it. Debates have also focussed on a re-evaluation of the role of educators and government role in relation to ICT. Finally how can young people be best helped to understand and benefit from modern communication systems?",

"abstractNote": "In many countries the school curriculum oscillates between focusing on traditional subjects and focusing on skills that are linked to the needs of the 21st-century digital age. Rosamund Sutherland argues against such a skills-based curriculum, maintaining that, from a social justice perspective, the priority of schools should be to give young people access to the knowledge that they are not likely to learn outside school. She draws on the work of Michael Young, Lev Vygotsky, Amartya Sen and David Olson to develop new theoretical and practical insights that offer ways of changing policy and practice to improve equality and life chances for young people, while acknowledging the potential transformative role of digital technologies. This timely book will be invaluable to teachers, academics, students and policy makers interested in the ways in which the digital landscape transforms the nature of the debate about equity and social justice in education.",

In this paper, we discuss some of the implications of\nsociocultural view of learning for how classroom research is conducted and\ndescribe some of the approaches we have used to generate information on student\nclassroom experiences. Over the course of our work we have found that the use of\nmultiple and multimodal data generation methods allows student with different\ninterests and abilities to take an active part in research. We then detail some of the challenges and rewards involved in working with students in these ways as part of a research agenda focused on enhancing teaching and learning.",

Combined, the photographs\nand the photo-interviews provided a unique insight into children’s thinking about\nscience and technology. They proved useful for accessing different viewpoints, as\nchildren took photographs at school, at home and in their communities. As\nmethods, auto-photography and photo-interviews newly exposed the issues and\nchallenges inherent in qualitative research, especially the need for the research process and the researcher to be open to the unexpected and surprising.",
